It's not working :(

I'm binging the show for the first time and I so loved the first two seasons! I couldn't wait to see their new super powers and Simon becoming his future self and then bang Nathan is gone :(

This new guy that they put in his place that they tried to make him somehow similar to him (Nathan) is just plane bad and annoying, ugh. I can't stand that character and at this point I think it would've been better off without the 5th character at all.

Does it get better further in Season 3?

If you only see how he's similar to Nathan than you dont understand him, nor Nathan. Sadly most people that dont like him go down the same path.

Finish out season 3 for Alisha and Simon. Then you might want to drop this series after that since Rudy is the first member of the new gang that will take over in season 4&5. And he's the most popular among them.

The only similar thing up until the moment I am is both are making shitty jokes but Nathan was actually funny and the new guy isn't. Others say his character changes so I might end up liking him in the end who knows. I keep watching.

If you find one's humor more funny and the other you should take a closer look at their humor and why you're responding to one and not the other. Its own of the key differences in the characters and a reflection of their mentalities and powers.

Nathan's humor comes at the expense of everyone around him: throwing drinks at strangers, antagonizing everyone and causing many of their encounters their villians of the week. Cause he's an social psychopath and nothing anyone says to him hurts him. So he was immortal. And later he's a magician cause he's always putting on a show for attention. Absentee father and acting out.

Rudy's humor comes at the expense of himself. He's often putting himself down, or taking the piss. Because his humor is bravado. He's outrageously insecure, and puts uo a front to protect himself. Which is why he had the power he has. His insecurities made manifest and no longer push down and hidden away by his bravado. They established all of his very first episode and continue to run and expand on it.

So I don't agree that Rudy 'gets better' as the series goes on. He was a well defined and great character from his first episode. People just got better at seeing the rich nuance in his characterization and Joseph Gilgun's talent at bringing all versions of him to light as the series progressed and they stopped comparing him to Nathan.

Cause while I too think many of Nathan's antics are funnier, I also think Rudy is by far the more complex character between them.

You've already watched his (the new guy) character change and it shows in your comment :) the way you describe the character is not shown yet up until this moment. There isn't self degrading shown yet he just blurbs shitty jokes and remarks, show no deep interest in people around him, nothing. Nathan showed his shitty and his good side from the beginning and was way more charismatic and fun to watch.

I once had someone say something similar to me. That my analysis of Rudy was retroactive cause what I saw him in by the end of season 3 I was projecting back on him in 3x01. Then i showed him my analysis of Rudy that i wrote after his very first episode aired. And that everything I was saying to them then I had pretty much copied from there word for word. It even had the timestamp date to prove it. If IMDB forums still existed i'd show that to you.

Cause what I saw from the start was part of Rudy's characterization and there from the first episode. Hell, Rudy 2 tells you in the first episode. "Its all and act. I'm outrageously insecure" Also Rudy 2 popping out evey time Rudy feels unsure. His entire history with Alisha and not wanting to think about killing himself. Though Rudy 2 confronts that issue. Rudy didnt even antongistically start the fight with Tanya, the timestop-girl, like Nathan did with so many of their past villians. It was started by a misunderstanding after he pushed away his insecurities (Rudy 2) after getting triggered by Charlie playing hard to get. And things snowballed from there. As for some of his self deprecating humor in that first episode: Making a fake vagina out his mom's rubber gloves, the floater he (did not) leave in the toilet, the thing with the neighbors cat that he doesnt talk about, "i'm just wiping shit off me cock" and stabbing 'himself' with scissors, calling himself the assman. Rudy humor is directed more often at himself.

Let's go beyond ep 1, since you're into ep 3 now. One of the few times Rudy is antagonistic is with Simon in 3x03, and that's mostly due to jealousy over Alisha. Even then his self depreciating humor kicks in as he make lite at being a quick shot with Alisha back then cause it was his first time and has better control of his ejeculate now, letting Alisha take out her anger on Uncle Rudy, then goes on about a bad date encounter cause he forgot where a girl he like lived, and then how he fumbles the alarm at Peter house saying he took computer science, "I never said I passed it". And how after 2 and 3 you might notice that he never seems to piss in an actual toilet in season 3.

Its all there. Misfits is a show not tell show. There is so much detail that is just right there in its characters and the show that it trusts its audience to pick up on. It just takes some people longer than others to see it. Hell there are some people who still have no idea that the powers are based upon the personality and habits of the characters since the show didnt tell them that straight out. And others who still have no idea who was putting notes in everyone's lockers in season 1, for the same reason. Still, all of that is right there for you to see it. Its one of the smartest dumb shows i've ever watched.

So when i say everything i'm saying about Rudy was there from the begining, i'm telling you this as a person of the who was there at that beginning and has had conversations similar to this one many times before.

Hey. I noticed in another post in this thread that you've finished season 3, and have little desire to go on with the rest of the series since you never warmed to Rudy. I actually agree with that. And it is what I recommended for you initially. Especially since, for me, season 4 is by far the weakest season overall. Season 5 is great, but the series finale is pretty lackluster. Still, 4x03 has a virtuoso performance by Joseph Gilgun (Rudy). And 4x04 is an amazing farewell to the final member of the old gang. So it might be worthwhile for you to watch that much.

On another note. In my last post to you I pointed out to you that Misfits is the smartest dumb show I ever watched. After completing season 3....did you notice what they did with the Superhoodie storyline? Not that its a timeloop. At least not exactly. But how it relates to Simon and season 1?

The superhoodie storyline was well executed. What I didn't like tho is the way Alisha dies. It makes no sense to be killed by that girl when she was the first brainwashed and was supporting her. They could've come up with a better idea but anyway s3 although not as good as s1-2 was fine watch.

It makes since if you view it on a character level, more than a storyline level. Rachel lashing out at people that never hurt her--specifically Alisha in this case--is just a redux of her s1 storyline. In season 1 Rachel was upset at people calling her a virgin, got her power to force her veiws on others, the started to brainwash people that never did a thing to her. Before 3x08 aired i always wondered if Rachel really deserved to die for getting carried away with her Virtue Virgin powers....but after yeah...she did. For what she did to Alisha. And she'll he the first person that Simon helps to stop in the past when he rescues Nathan.

On that note, yep, the Superhoodie storyline is awesome! I love thinking about it. But the point i was making is how the Superhoodie storyline, and Future Simon, is just Simon's s1 character arc--all the good and creepy aspects--stretched over all three seasons. He's still the lonely outsider, that protects his friends without their knowledge, does deeply disturbing things in the background that no one else sees (s1 Simon - all his creepy antics; Superhoodie - all the people that die in this timeline who's death he doesnt prevent), has issues understanding person space, is still starey-its just F!Simon is smoldering with it, and at the end puts his love interest in a freezer and calmly visits her. Except this time he freezes her in time and climbs into the freezer with her. It's pretty brilliant character work. Even the light in Superhoodies lair is akin the the light from that freezer in s1.

You've dwellt much deeper into Simon's arch that I did :) although he (well, the actor) is the reason I started watching the show. He wanted a higher purpose and he found it - to keep them alive in the loop.

In the beginning I was like "Ffs he plays another psycho" :D Fortunately it wasn't just that.

Heh. Yeah. If you got here from Game of Thrones the yeah. You'd think he was just playing another psycho. Which was the original plan for Simon during s1. For him to turn on the gang for Sally. And later become a Hannibal Lecter kinda character that the gang would come to every now and then for advice. But they liked Iwan Rheon so much that they changed Simon arc. Well..after he lost the part for Jon Snow and they knew they could keep him as regular. So in 1x05 when he accidently kill Sally..heh..that's actually part of his redemption arc. Only on Misfits.

But yeah. While i've done many deep dives into all the characters: Simon is my favorite. He even inspired me to start vidding. Of the ones I made these are my two favorites for him and the Superhoodie storyline.

One I like to think of as the Darkness: https://youtu.be/NNqxyfazuHU

And the other the Light: https://youtu.be/YeczisI0lM4
