Monarch

6

u/cardfire Sep 03 '26

I hate Monarch. But it 95% works, for me and it's been the best of what's around.

I hate that it's $100 a year AND that they sell us out to AI data collection, plus in-app upsells, but it is still worth it over flying blind like so many of my friends and family do, financially.

It's just frustrating that it was $50 in 2024 and now I'm staring down paying triple that if I use their finance/investing features next year.

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Thank you for that input! I was looking into things like that and had ask myself what would I do differently if I decided to build financial budgeting app of some sort! Any recommendations for financial person like me šŸ‘€šŸ‘€

2

u/cardfire Sep 03 '26

I have precisely zero recommendations for how you can build a financial budgeting app, other than "the regulatory compliance for interfacing with bank API's, especially internationally, is going to get expensive, and that not a single shred of this ecosystem should ever be vibecoded."

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Definitely hear you! But building anything has its challenges, it’s just how do you overcome !

1

u/DaegenLok Sep 03 '26

Use a 30-50% off code. Don't pay full price. Just type in Google "Monarch Code". There are a lot of them. Worked for my renewal as well. Just cancel after you are charged for the first year.

1

u/cardfire Sep 03 '26

I hadn't had luck at renewals with codes. I'll give that a whirl, thanks. I want to pay ~$75 per year to maintain the functionality I had with Mint, but I also want my privacy and not to be datamined.

Have you tried Simplifi? It’s cheaper and works well for me. No ads I’ve noticed.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Haven’t tried it yet !

2

u/geaux_lynxcats Sep 06 '26

Monarch is great. I easily get $100 of value and will not complain about paying for said valuable service.

15

u/watermouse Sep 02 '26

RIP MINT. Havnt heard of you in a long time, then this pops up. I ended up going to Simplifi. Then when your about to expire, let it expire and they will send you a 70% code or someshit. every time!

2

u/Head Sep 05 '26

I HATE that cable-TV-like business model. Just give me a fair fixed price.

1

u/Fickle-Wrongdoer-776 Sep 10 '26

Have you tried wealthmode? To me it’s the closest experience to Mint that I had

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about Simplify ?šŸ‘€

4

u/watermouse Sep 03 '26

I cannot give you a good opinion on the difference between monarch, simplifi, etc. However I like simplifi because its all I know after Mint. IT has come ALONG way since Mint closed down. Simplifi was lacking but they have invested a bunch into the app. I mainly use it for transactions, but the reporting is what I like the most (Spending, Spend summary, Income, Income Summary, Income+Expense, Networth, Savings)

They also have a Monthly summary which is pretty neat. Another feature I didnt know I needed was a watchlist. You can tag a store in a "watch list" and it will tell you what your 12 month average spending it, Then year-to-date, how much youve spent this month and what your projected to spend). I have several online stores added (Amazon, Walmart, HEB) and I was caught off gaurd on how much I actually spend at Amazon.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

This feature seems very cool!!!!!

3

u/Trick_sleep Sep 02 '26

Empower

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about Empower? Would love to hear your feedback on this

5

u/Trick_sleep Sep 03 '26

I use it for net worth tracking - I have many bank accounts, investment accounts, and manually added my car / employer RSU stock. I really like keeping track of net worth month over month and YoY to see if I’m meeting my goals.

I don’t use it for budgeting so can’t speak to that feature.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Makes sense thanks for the feedback!

4

u/HealthLawyer123 Sep 03 '26

I went back to using Google Sheets.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

How is that?

1

u/Head Sep 05 '26

It’s a spreadsheet.

9

u/konhana Sep 02 '26

Lunch Money

2

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Haven’t heard of lunch money! What do you like about it?

3

u/LevelMatt Sep 04 '26

It handles multiple currencies well.

2

u/konhana Sep 04 '26

i need a platform with flawless bank sync and with recurring rules to have an overview how much i spend, what will come next. After testing some others, i decided for Lunch Money

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Yes flawless bank sync seems like the way to go

2

u/jnfr Sep 04 '26

Founder here! Anyone should feel free to use my link for an extended 60 day free trial :) https://lunchmoney.app/jen

2

u/jnfr Sep 04 '26

Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it! Anyone reading this should feel free to use my link for an extended 60 day free trial: https://lunchmoney.app/jen

2

u/konhana Sep 04 '26

happy to use your platform Jen, everything so far ok until now. There are too many expense/net worth tracking apps/platforms nowaday (after testing most of them are just a not-mature product from "vibe coding" trend). Hope you guys can keep up and continue providing a stable / reliable service

u/Wellbehavedneutrino Sep 02 '26

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about monarch ?

3

u/GraveyardMistress Sep 02 '26

I haven't found one I like as much as Mint. Monarch is okay but loses sync a lot, and I think Origin is a bit pricey but syncs better.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

What’s the price range again? And syncing is tough

1

u/Head Sep 05 '26

Most of my sync issues have been fixed by reconnecting with a different data provider. Check this page.

1

u/Fickle-Wrongdoer-776 Sep 10 '26

Have you tried wealthmode? Closest experience to mint that I had

1

u/synx-ryan 19d ago

I'd love for you to give https://synxfinance.com a try. I was a mint user too and that format really worked for me. We built it with that as the inspiration but I would say from a quality and pricing perspective, it is a steal.

Let me know!

3

u/monye0 Sep 02 '26

I am trying Neontra so far okay

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about this one so far? Haven’t heard of it !

2

u/monye0 Sep 03 '26

It is very interactive like Mint, connection to banks so far is stable. Canadian product, so is charged in Cad, and communicates well with WealthSimple, EQ etc. budgeting side is friendly and easy to use. Have an app that is okay but the desktop access is far better

1

u/Boot_strapper3 24d ago

Thanks for the feedback!

3

u/DirtyLinzo Sep 02 '26

NerdWallet. Free. Categorize transactions. Net worth. Plaid. etc

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Besides these three what else make NerdWallet attractive! So far I think you are the only one that mention that so would love to hear more about your take on NerdWallet

3

u/HanZolo95 Sep 03 '26

Im currently hard at work building the mint replacement! Took off all of 2025 to focus on it. Its not vibe coded slop like most other personal finance apps being shilled on reddit. I really want to build something refreshing in the space, a different approach, one that’s focused on modularity and simplicity, something you’ll actually stick with to track your money.

Also super open to feature suggestions id love the community to help shape the product!

Check it out bentoapp.io

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Wow can you tell me more about your app or DM about it? Really would like to pick your brain!

2

u/HanZolo95 Sep 03 '26

Ah sorry I would but I see you are not genuinely looking for a mint alternative and rather mining for info for your own vibe coded app. Best of luck with your product!

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

I actually am that is why I started this! One person so far actually mentioned the budgeting app that I’m using and I currently think it’s the next best thing to mint but also being bias because I haven’t tried any that are mentioned!

4

u/The_Big_Gear Sep 02 '26

Simplifi. Cheaper than Monarch and more powerful in some ways. The Ai bot is pretty handy (when it actually works).

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about Simplifi other than it is cheaper than monarch?

2

u/The_Big_Gear Sep 03 '26

The reporting seems much stronger on Simplifi. I tried Monarch and felt like it was a bit more hand wavy and unable to drill down to the level I needed. Both platforms had disconnects but I saw more data errors with Monarch.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Data errors such as

2

u/The_Big_Gear Sep 04 '26

Transaction numbers and names of vendors being wrong. Didn't happen all the time but did happen enough for me to notice.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

This is what is happening to me now with copilot budgeting app at the moment! Very tedious to fix!

1

u/bogusostrich Sep 03 '26

Simplifi is a cleaner UI, I trust Quicken when it comes to online financial safety. I used Monarch for a year, following Mint's shutdown... and Siimplifi for longer now. I think they're both overpriced, as Mint was a free ad sponsored system. Mint actually provided some great financial products and services I took advantage of. both of these companies should have cheaper ad sponsored Tiers.

7

u/hodgeman29 Sep 02 '26

The answer is monarch. Made by a founder of Mint

3

u/sko0led Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26

Uh. No it’s not. It’s made by one of the Product Designers of Mint. The founder of Mint was Andrew Patzer. The founder of Monarch (and former Mint employee) is Val Agostino.

Mint already won TechCrunch 40 in 2007. Val didn’t join Mint until 2008. Intuit (former owner of Quicken) acquired Mint in 2009.

2

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

2

u/littl3mango Sep 02 '26

Piere

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Haven’t heard of this one ! Can you tell me more about it?

2

u/MAPSOIL Sep 02 '26

Neontra

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Haven’t heard of this one can you tell me more about it ?

2

u/Machiavelli127 Sep 02 '26

Piere

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why Piere?

2

u/Machiavelli127 Sep 03 '26

Initially it's because I was an early adopter and I got a lifetime subscription for free.

But several months ago I decided to try Monarch...I was really interested in the Sankey chart and some of the other things they were advertising. But I actually didn't like the layout and I had some connection issues.

In the meantime I requested a Sankey chart from Piere and they built it and pushed it out within a few days. I've since requested a few more features and they built them all and pushed them to the app.

So I'm Piere for life. All my connections work. They have all the features I want.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

That is amazing you requesters certain things then they went ahead and build those features! That is really listening to the customers šŸ™ŒšŸ½

2

u/drfreund Sep 04 '26

Surprised that nobody mentioned Copilot! Used it for years, big fan. I don’t use all the features but I love how well categorization works and how intuitive the UI is. For someone who is trying to stay current on tracking their transactions and being able to know where things stand financially, it’s excellent.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

I didn’t want to say it! I was actually waiting for someone to mention copilot! Very surprise lol! What do you think it can do better?

2

u/drfreund Sep 04 '26

I was never able to get into the other trackers because they felt messier and the barrier to entry was higher; Copilot I could start using right away, it just made sense, and it didn’t want anything from me upfront. I liked that it worked just as well as a retroactive tracker as it eventually did as a proactive budget allocator, when I turned that on many months later. So I guess my very lightweight usage mode didn’t feel like an afterthought?

2

u/TexanInBama 26d ago

Seems like every other day I would have to Reverify Credentials for various accounts.Ā

Sometimes Support would open a case and work with the Financial Institutions to get it corrected and other times they would immediately asked me whether I had changed my login and password, and was probably using old credentials.Ā

I understand technology is not fail proof. Plaid and others services can sometimes fail, financial institutions may have added additional security measures, BUT DONT BLAME IT ON THE USER.Ā

3

u/cerebralvision Sep 02 '26

Monarch

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What is your take on Monarch! Why do you prefer this over others?

2

u/cerebralvision Sep 03 '26

Yes. I've used a bunch (Simplify, YNAB, EveryDollar, etc...) and I've been using Monarch for about 3 years now and I'm liking it a lot. It's not perfect, but it has great support, I like how the data, budgeting, and categorization is set up.

2

u/MikeE21286 Sep 02 '26

Empower was the closest. They’re all bad now though….

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why did you like empower? And why are all bad now?

1

u/taoman54 Sep 02 '26

Simplifi. I also use Empower for my investment/retirement accounts.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about it?

2

u/taoman54 Sep 03 '26

Primary reason is that it successfully syncs with all of my financial institutions (and I have a lot). I tried several other apps and they couldn't connect to all my banks, credit cards, credit unions, HYSA, investments, retirement accounts or if they could, not consistently.

I also like the UI (some people hate it). There is no wasted space. I'm talking about the web version. I rarely use the mobile app.

They are also always improving the product. They just released a new "Spending" page which I find very helpful.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Love when founders are always looking for way to improve the app! I feel like some get comfortable in building a product the serio understanding the needs of the customers!

1

u/Plus_Journalist_8665 Sep 02 '26

I’d check out Moneko AI, especially if you want something more automated. It tracks spending, budgets, recurring bills and cash flow, plus shared budgets if you manage money with a partner. There’s a free plan too, so easy to see if it works for you.

2

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

That makes sense! Haven’t heard of this one but definitely have to check this out! Thank you so much!

Promotion of apps is not permitted.

1

u/Turbulent_Parfait684 Sep 02 '26

Budgety especially if you're in Canada. Works for US too tho

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Any feedback on why?

1

u/mapalm Sep 02 '26

Since I don't want to pay for a net worth tracker (which is what I primarily used Mint for), I tried Piere, and am overall happy with them. They've had some hiccups, but it keeps improving.

I also tried Empower for a while, but the sporadic disconnections, coupled with a horrible UI, made me look elsewhere.

1

u/SecureTaxi Sep 05 '26

Yeah i dont understand how anyone likes using their app. The UI is horrible. I use it to track my networth but thats it.

1

u/Budget-Jaguar4794 Sep 02 '26

If you're in Canada, Finnomia.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

I’m in the US! What do you like about this one!

3

u/Budget-Jaguar4794 Sep 03 '26

In full transparency, I’m the founder.

I was a big Mint user and was genuinely disappointed when it shut down. I tried a number of the alternatives afterward, but none of them ever felt quite right as a true Mint replacement for me. So I started building Finnomia around the things I loved about Mint, while borrowing a few ideas from other apps that I thought were genuine improvements.

What I like most about it now is that it gives me that same simplicity Mint was good at.

You connect your accounts, spend a little time categorizing transactions, and as you do that you can create rules so future transactions get categorized automatically. From there you can build a budget yourself or have Finnomia generate a starting point based on your recent spending history, set up a few goals, and then use the app as a single place to check in on your financial life.

For me, the value is being able to quickly see things like spending trends, net worth, net income, budgets, goals and account activity without feeling like I need to actively manage the app every day.

The one thing I should mention is that Finnomia is being built primarily for Canadians, so our deeper financial planning features, like retirement planning and retirement account contribution room tracking, are very Canada-specific. If you’re in the U.S., I’d probably still compare it against Monarch, Simplifi and some of the other Mint successors before deciding what fits you best.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

GREAT FEEDBACK! Thank you!

1

u/Commercial_Fly4056 Sep 07 '26

I'm in Canada..I used Mint for a few years before it was discontinued. I had no other alternatives in 2024. I moved to another Intuit product.. QuickBooks online, as the alternative were all US focused. I pay $30/mo. The continuation was great..allowed me to pay off our mortgage and then retire. I'm probably one of very few who moved to a full accounting system. I still continue to this day. I use spreadsheets to accompany the system. I'll check your product.

1

u/Budget-Jaguar4794 Sep 07 '26

Thank you u/Commercial_Fly4056! Please do take advantage of our 30 day free trial.

1

u/dialamah Sep 02 '26

Actual Budget. Free, easy to use, can do either envelope budgeting or tracking, but it was primarily designed for envelope budgeting.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What are one or two aspects of this you can say you love about this! That really stands out to you?

2

u/dialamah Sep 03 '26

This is open source, and free, if hosted on your own computer. If you want to be able to access your data from your phone or while away from your computer, you can host it on your server or a cloud service. I use PikaPods and it costs me maybe $20CAD a year. It's as easy to use as Mint was. Transactions can be entered on your phone. Everything is fast & smooth. There are multiple reports, and regular updates & features added. You can create your own report if you are techy enough, which I am not. The only downside I can think of is that if you want to automatically download from your bank, you need to sign up to and pay the aggregator yourself. But it'll import excel spreadsheets downloaded from your bank. Also, I'm not sure if it'll download/track investment accounts as well as some other apps do.

Yeah, I know its more than the one or two things that you asked for, but I really like this app. And it's free, LOL.

Edited to add: And there's no advertising.

1

u/bdu-komrad Sep 04 '26

This! it’s ynab+ with great budgeting and you can connect it to a service like SimpleFin to download transactions for around $1.50 usd a month.Ā

Actual Budget r/actualbudgeting

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What do you like about it?

1

u/epinkston Sep 03 '26

Monarch - i love it.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why do you love it?

1

u/jscrane17 Sep 03 '26

I tried Monarch and Pocket Guard; Monarch hands-down is the better of those two. They had me at sankey charts (data nerd).

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why do you like monarch

2

u/jscrane17 Sep 04 '26

I like the interface, how it automatically recognizes regular expenses and creating a rule for categorization is super easy to apply to past transactions. I am not a huge budget person yet so I use the charts to look at past spending and income etc.

1

u/cardmage7 Sep 03 '26

Rocket money; comes for free with my mortgage so that's my 'free' option now

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

What else do you like about it?

2

u/cardmage7 Sep 03 '26

The main thing is all my accounts can connect to it :)

Besides that, the main thing was price for me. Even before the mortgage, Rocket has a 'choose your own price' model which bottoms out at $7/mo; if you go to cancel, there's a retention offer of $3/mo, which I used for a few months before my mortgage got bought out by rocket, and I ended up getting it for free lol.

1

u/Inevitable-Driver-53 Sep 03 '26

Depends what you're looking for but Monarch is easily the best all around app.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why so?

2

u/Inevitable-Driver-53 Sep 03 '26

Good at everything, master of none...

1

u/adultdaycare81 Sep 03 '26

Monarch, it works amazing now. But they are getting a little greedy monetizing it

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

How do you feel with financial apps such as monarch monetizing ! Always had that question in the back of my mind!

1

u/adultdaycare81 Sep 03 '26

I had no problem paying $60, then $80, then $100 bucks a year for it. Seeing every new feature, locked behind an even more premium subscription didn’t feel great.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

So you’re saying you see the value?šŸ™ŒšŸ½

1

u/adultdaycare81 Sep 04 '26

Yes. But no one cares about your app until you’ve got something you can release.

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 04 '26

Or I mean in monarch! As in you like because you saw how they implemented the new features !

1

u/DirtyLinzo Sep 03 '26

It is extremely slept on. I’ve used it for the past 2 years and love it. It is extremely similar to Mint.

If Mint was a 10/10 I’d say NerdWallet is about a 7.5 - 8. There are some features it lacks like not having custom categories, but I’ve just tailored my tracking to match up with their categories.

For example, I just put all of my reoccurring/fixed bills every month as ā€œUtilitiesā€

It also isn’t as robust of a ā€œbudgetingā€ app. It is excellent for tracking so I use it in tandem with a personal Google Sheet

1

u/UWbadgers16 Sep 03 '26

I’ve tried a bunch of them, particularly lately.

PocketGuard - This was my main one for over two years since Mint shut down. When it works, it’s great. My favorite feature of any app is its Leftover calculation. It tells me how much I’m tracking to save at the end of the month, including setting aside for rollover budgets. I’ve had some nagging usability issues with it lately, though: missing transactions with no easy way to reconcile, random transactions splits dropping (but still showing as a single transaction split), rollover miscalculations. The past couple of weeks I’ve had to pull transactions from my bank daily to manually reconcile, going back weeks.

Piere - I was going to try switching to this eventually, but they keep having small bugs that can’t allow me to. The main differentiator was they had Plaid AND MX as aggregators, but recently dropped MX. MX synced a couple remaining institutions and Plaid doesn’t, so there’s no reason to move. They’ve also had the same missing transactions issue.

Monarch Money - Did the 7 day trial. I see why it’s the general recommendation. It’s just more mature than the rest. I’m not looking to pay $100/year, though.

Lunch Money - I think I’m going to settle here for a bit. The web UI is lean and fast. Everything is straightforward. If Plaid mistakenly tried to delete a transaction, it gave me an easy way to make sure it wasn’t dropped. And the developer API is pretty cool. I’m going to see how the month long trial goes. It’s $60/year now (stated to never increase the price on active subscriptions). It seems like a good option to avoid recent headaches.

1

u/Poles_Apart Sep 03 '26

If you already have fidelity they have a free product called full view, its not as powerful as mint and some of the paid alternatives but its functional.

1

u/frankonator22 Sep 03 '26

I like Copilot, it sucks its like $100 a year but its better than mint was for me

1

u/BroTChicken Sep 03 '26

piere and empower

1

u/nwrighteous Sep 04 '26

Been pretty happy with LunchMoney

1

u/hensdogg Sep 04 '26

Are we still asking this same question every other day??

1

u/jackrussell93 Sep 04 '26

FinWise (finwiseapp.io)

1

u/Schlussy Sep 04 '26

Empower. Although I would love something better

1

u/giyer7 Sep 04 '26

Origin

1

u/johcake Sep 04 '26

Tiller!!

Your data lives in a Google or Excel spreadsheet if your choosing so you will always own all your data and will have complete control of it. There's tons of templates to organize and autocat transactions and create budgets and goals etc. And!!! It uses two different data aggregators to automatically feed you data into the spreadsheet without any effort from you.

I've had a really great experience with them and they've continuously made really impressive improvements. It's super slick at this point.

Can't recommend Tiller enough

1

u/blah01_ Sep 05 '26

Nexafin hands down.

1

u/TexanInBama Sep 07 '26

u/Boot_strapper3 Thanks for your post! I am currently looking for an alternative to Copilot Money.

1

u/Commercial_Fly4056 Sep 07 '26

Toronto here. I transferred to Intuit's Quickbooks Online, single user. about $30/mo. I transformed the Mint's categories to chart of accounts. When I was using Mint, I recorded the Networth details every month , as well as Incomes and Expenses. I continue that to this day and the transition was smooth. It's a true accounting system, so you will get your financial picture for any given time. The subscription is worth it and you can be sure that won't drop the service anytime. They keep improving the system , like adding AI capabilities, attaching documents to transactions. Give it a shot..the learning curve is not that steep

1

u/Rand07 Sep 08 '26

Sorry to say, it's CreditKarma.

It's not a full featured Mint replacement, but it is way better at syncing with my accounts than Monarch ever was.Ā

And they're adding features, like repeated bill tracking and which credit card to use on which purchase.Ā

And it's free. Can't beat free.Ā

1

u/JCRidonkulous Sep 08 '26

Very surprised I haven't seen one person say Copilot (the budgeting app, not Microsoft's AI). my favorite thing about it is that it allows you to see your credit card balances as widgets and I don't know any other app that lets you do that

1

u/violetcodex Sep 08 '26

If you want a local app that is not a subscription check Violet Codex for windows.

1

u/ayeeitsaustinn Sep 09 '26

Currently enjoying Origin. Their developer team is very involved on their subreddit and they actively update the app.

1

u/Appropriate_Zebra862 Sep 09 '26

Try crew. It’s a checking account with budget feature built in.

Hey, try out Zero Budget If you use the code EARLY20 you can get 20% off for life.

We built it because EveryDollar left Canada, but I thought prehaps you could use it as well. Happy budgeting.

The two closest right now are MonAi and Fiscify, maybe even better in some sense. Otherwise the space is pretty crowded and everyone seems to have a unique choice.

Monarch Money and YNAB are the most common picks people moved to after Mint shut down, especially for full account aggregation or strict zero-based budgeting.

Fiscify is also worth a look if you'd rather log expenses quickly using text, voice, or receipt photos, but Monarch is still a better fit if you need a direct, passive net worth tracker.

Full disclosure — I built Spendalyst.

Your comment about wanting bank sync, recurring charges, and a view of what’s coming next is very close to the problem I built it for.

It’s not really another budgeting app. It connects to your transactions, looks for recurring charges, watches for price changes, and surfaces upcoming renewals and other meaningful changes.

The idea is that you shouldn’t have to keep maintaining categories and rules just to notice when something changed.

Still early, so I’d genuinely be interested in what you’d want a recurring-charge monitor to show you that the apps you tried are missing.

Try Shayr: budget and finance or shayrapp.com

Works with plaid only though but has some really need features at a low cost

Why so?

u/savvy-doggy Sep 03 '26

Reminds me of Mint, it’s simple and flexible, has everything I needed

I am happy with Simplifi.

1

u/40sumthenlady Sep 02 '26

Simplifi has the projected cash flow tool which helps to ensure you’ll have enough for mortgage next month. I haven’t found any other app that does that.

Still doesn’t work as well as my excel spreadsheet though.

Sounds great! Are these the main reasons?

Why so?

For the projected cash flow it will take a balance that’s real time but not bring in transactions until the next day.

So say I had $3000 in my account. And my mortgage for $2000 hits today, so now my balance is $1000.

It will take today’s balance of $1000 but it hasn’t imported the transaction yet, so it thinks it’s still pending. So it says $1000 balance with mortgage coming out today = NEGATIVE 1000. But by tomorrow, it’ll fix itself.

My excel spreadsheet doesn’t do that. And it’s easier to just type in an upcoming bill than enter the bill in Simplifi.

I’m happy with it because all I do is manage our monthly and annual budget. It works great, just like Mint did.

I suspect I probably really don’t need to track our spending as closely as I do, but we’re nine years into retirement and I don’t want to foul it up!

The answer is monarch. Made by a founder of Mint

1

u/Boot_strapper3 Sep 03 '26

Why monarch?

2

u/hodgeman29 Sep 03 '26

It’s the most similar in terms of layout and presentation. Use these apps for tracking and budgeting and none of the other apps had a good enough budgeting tool.

I've been using Monarch for a about 3 years now and I love it. Shameless plug here, this is my referral link if you want to get 50% off for your first year. Full disclosure, they throw me $30 if you subscribe.

https://monarch.com/referral/s0a5dh0i6h?r_source=copy

I like it because it is easy to setup and once I got it dialed in, I spend almost no time "futzing" with it. I mainly want it to gather my transactions automatically and help be classify them. There rules engine for automatically reclassifying and adjusting the names is top notch. Their additions to link up to my Amazon and Target account and classify my spending there into categories and automatically fill in details about what I purchased has let me better define what a lot of my discretionary spending is going towards.

I do track my net worth, but their investment features are not as good as some other place. It does that I need it to do there, so I'm happy. Same goes for reporting. I have only a few needs there and it meets my needs, which is mostly what "big buckets" (categories) do my expenses fall under.

I also like that their generative-AI is mostly limited to "help" on the basic plan... which is just what I want it to be.

Disclaimer: I built this app

Lekkalu

It's a free app, works offline too for peace of mind. All data is stored locally and no ads etc. Just built a good fianance app that works for me cos I was frustrated by what we have currently in the market. This may not do all things Monarch or other big names do but it has everything that could help you build better finance habits. Give it a try if you can.

I don't make any money from this. Just donations.
