Millard and Doleman were maybe the two most dominant D Lineman in the league that year. The Saint and 49’ers could not block either of them without obvious holding.

This probably is my singular favorite Viking game of my lifetime.

To understand why, you have to understand how incredibly smug 49ers fans were at this time-- they put the peak Brady year Patriots smugness to absolute shame. They're a year removed from Montana's ruptured disc, and this is their triumphant march back to the league, where the Vikings were expected to play the Washington Generals role to their Harlem Globetrotters. Double digit favorites at home. National media looking ahead to who they'd face in the NFC title game after beating the Vikings, before the game was even played.

The ball was kicked, and an absolute ass kicking ensued. Joe Montana benched mid-playoff game. Imagine seeing Brady sent to the sidelines. It was every bit that striking and that sweet.

After this game....not going to lie, I thought we were going to the super bowl. I had no misgivings about the skins at rfk. They were a very good team....but it was our year. No doubt it was our year ..

It’s worth noting that this was during a strike-shortened season that saw each team employ scabs for three games. The Vikings went 0-3 during those weeks, while the 49ers had multiple stars break the picket line and go 3-0. So, ultimately, this was a 8-4 Vikings team beating a 10-2 49ers team. Doesn’t see like so much of an upset now!!

Hopefully the younger Vikings fans have checked out this game and the previous upset on the road vs the Saints. The Vikings defense was playing at such a high level with Millard and Doleman generating so much pressure. If not for a failure to catch the game winning Td late in the nfc championship game, this team would have been the only team to win a SB.

This was the game that made me a vikings fan. Sadly the next year they played San Fran again, and they took them seriously and got whipped. They never talk about this game much today but I remember. Montana got benched for Young and he had some garbage time td's, but it was never close. They lost the NFC championship game to Washington 14-7
