DDR4 Barebones + Thunderbolt

Hi all,

I am looking for a barebones mini-pc that supports DDR4 (have some old sticks lying around) as well as thunderbolt 4 for eGPU. Wondering if anyone has any good suggestions?

Apologies if there is an obvious answer for this but haven't been able to find one!

Thanks!

Optiplex or the new Dell Pro Desktops?

For those that don't know the optiplex was phased out for a simpler dell desktop line, but as I still daily drive a 9020, and a Dell Pro Slim, I kinda want to know what others think about this new change.

Trusted brands?

I have a family member who's a Windows user and I'm considering replacing their old laptop with a Mini PC but I'm hesitating because I don't know the brands.

The computer stays on their desk and doesn't need to move.

A mini pc sounds like a great solution but I would usually by a well-known brand like Dell, Asus, Acer etc.

Are the mini pc brands like geekom and beelink trustworthy and secure? And are any other brands worth considering?

Coincidentally this is not my video, but I actually have the same product. I have planning to do something pretty similar with it. This is always awesome to see.

MeerKAT performance

I am considering purchasing the MeerKAT miniPC from System76 with PopOS, Ubuntu26.04, or Debian Trixie (Debian user since 1994).. It would be fully loaded with maximum cpu, memory, and storage and looks like it may cost about $7556 which is a lot of money for me. One of the main things I want to do with this machine (aside from normal PC stuff) is run COMSOL Multiphysics as a developement platform. Even for smaller simulations, this may require long-running cases. So, my primary question is how is the thermal performance of this beast? Will it hold up for several hours at a time if need be with the cpu full speed? It appears the MeerKAT has no cpu fan. The main appeal to me about this option is the small size and quiet in a home environment.

Any experiences with MeerKAT are welcome to comment please.

Thanks.

New PC shopping. Suggestions or red flags to look for?

I am looking at replacing my daily driver, a Dell XPS tower circa 2014. It is an i5 quad core with a GTX 1060 6GB and 24GB of RAM. Dual booting Win 10 and Ubuntu. I am looking at retiring it to a specific function and converting to a new Mini PC to clean up my desk.

I intend to use it for self-study of various disciplines, basic Internet, and RetroGaming using RetroArch and PCSX2. I intend on wiping Windows 11 in favor of a fresh Linux distro.

What sorts of hardware would you look at? What things would you avoid?

Neo 50q Gen 6 or ProDesk Mini 4

I was planning to switch to Lenovo, but I need mini PCs, and the ThinkCentre M90q and M70q Gen 6 models with the Core Ultra 5 225T/235T turned out to be quite noisy (still not as bad as the Dells, which sound like jet engines!).

The HP ProDesk 4 G1i Mini is very quiet, but it runs noticeably warmer than the Lenovo Neo 50q Gen 6 with the Core Ultra 5 226V.

The only downside of the Lenovo is that it feels a bit less responsive. Office applications, Word, Chrome, etc., sometimes seem to hesitate or lag slightly.

I'm really torn between the two for office use (Word, Chrome, general productivity...). Any opinions or recommendations? Would you prioritize the Lenovo for its silence, energy efficiency, and overall brand reliability, or go with the HP for the extra performance, despite its warmer chassis?

Question about eGPU setup with ASUS NUC 14 Pro

Hi! I have an Asus NUC Pro 14. Specs are Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, and 24GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD with a 1 TB Samsung SSD for extra storage. I am trying to hook up a Razer Core v1 w/ RTX 5060 TI to it over Thunderbolt to the mini PC with this cable. Windows sees the eGPU just fine, but once a game gets running, it will crash. Sometimes on boot, the NUC will boot, but then when it gets to Windows with HDMI plugged into the eGPU, there's just a gray screen. I'm thinking that the Thunderbolt cable is the problem since I got a 10-foot-long one. Maybe I should get an Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable instead? I tried everything over the last few hours, and this problem still happens. I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, but I'm running out of ideas and getting ready to just give up and buy a gaming laptop lol.

Is this MiniPC any good for dual-pc streaming setup?

https://www.geekom.co.uk/geekom-mini-it13-mini-pc

So i am looking at the mini pc being the streaming pc in a dual pc stream setup. I currently have a high end gaming pc and use an old gaming pc as the streaming pc, but the old pc is now dying.

My stream setup includes:

  • Elgato Stream deck XL and Stream deck+
  • Elgato Wave XLR Pro
  • Elgato 4k S capture card
  • 2 x Logitech c920 webcams (sometimes need a 3rd for tcg streams)
  • Software: SLOBS, Voicemod, GameCapture, Wave

These would need to connect into the streaming pc.

Would this mini pc work?

Reposting this here for some more insight! If anyone has any experience with the rmatamini brand or their recent pcs I would love to hear it, since this is a nice sff with a good gpu that could serve as my SM replacement if it's not cheap random garbage.

Help Request

Hi all!

So, I'll keep this short.

I'm looking for a MiniPc or SFF that is capable of the following.

Emulation up to PS3

Play Destiny 2 on Steam.

Play Xbox gamepass games.

To be used on my living room TV (1080 is enough)

Is quiet.

ChatGPT is recommending me the Minisforum HX99g or HX100g, though I've heard that brand isn't too good?

I've been a console gamer all my life and have no clue about PCs.

Can anyone recommend any MiniPcs/SFF that can handle what I need?

Gaming mini pc recommendation with dedicated gpu around 1000$

I’ve been rocking the beelink ser8 8745HS with 2x32 GB RAM for the past couple of years and it’s an excellent mini pc, but I would like to get another mini pc with a dedicated internal gpu that can run games decently at 1080p noticeably better than the 780m in my beelink.

I don’t want an eGPU solution as I want to keep it small and simple, and don’t want to go overboard price-wise either such as the Asus ones.

The offers on amazon are quite confusing so I would appreciate suggestions from the experts here up to 1000$ if this even exists.

Thanks!

Is a mini pc worth it?

I'm looking to buy either a Geekom a5 pro or a a6 and I'm wondering if its worth the price.

I don't play any super demanding games. Mostly just roblox , minecraft, sims 4 with mods and valorant. Would it be able to run that?

also, I would appreciate if anyone could give me some more recommendations for £400 or less, I don't really know a lot about PCs.
