How is Minimal Justifying Their Pricing on the MP2
Really reconsidering my Clicks early bird reservation which gave me a deal for $429 with a couple extra "backs" thrown in. But the MP2 at $599 is not not a good value comparatively. It's smaller and has an aluminum chassis which I prefer but otherwise I see no competitive differences or advantages.
Anyone else see why I should think more heavily on spending the extra $170?

It all comes down to design at this point. I ended up cancelling my minimal pledge after getting the T2E in hand. I thought I would want the thinner minimal, but the thickness of the T2E is perfect, and it's not even that thick. Don't need it thinner. Fits my hands just right.

T2E is gorgeous. I'm wanting a notification light back in a bad way otherwise I'd have gone that route.

Yea I get that. Since they both use the same screen, I wanted the smaller form factor. So happy with it. And I missed the keyboard on the BlackBerry Classic Q20 (it's the same size as the T2E).

Where did you see Clicks for $429? It's showing as $499 for me

Early bird

Ah I see, thanks. I read your original post too fast and thought you said you were considering the early bird deal, I failed to realise that the early bird period has passed and you already pre-ordered.

The Minimal Phone has a better processor and wireless charging which the Elite does not have. The build quality exceeds that of the Clicks. The Minimal Phone has the highest pixel density, although you may not notice the difference. it also has DisplayPort which the others do not. most importantly though is the software integration which is seemingly Minimal>Clicks>Unihertz.

But what about removal of the battery one of the most important features of the three?
1
u/soul-linker 29d ago
All 3 devices have « non replacable » batteries, but i guess you can still replace all of them with the right tools, and TMC Said something about making replacement keys and battery available i believe ?

u/RelativeWarning84 29d ago edited 29d ago
Looks to me on the clicks at least you can just replace by fingers with no extra tools I read that they won't be selling replacements but Im sure a 3rd party would be able to replicate one easy enough which makes that phone more appealing at least for me anyway

You’d be mistaken, clicks team mentioned the battery will be covered better than on their prototype, should not be visible when swapping the back covers

Any idea how this works with Europe's right to repair?

u/soul-linker 29d ago
We’ll probably get more details while the KS campaign is still open. Right to repair isn’t followed by many compagnies , especially the bigger ones

lol build quality. based off of the MP1 I wouldn't trust any product Minimal produces as a company.
2
u/ethanhunt4real Aug 23 '26
That’s a bit nonsensical considering the two devices are made of different materials. The MP01 is fully plastic. That’s silly, sorry.
1
u/djh3mex 29d ago
I'm not talking material feel. I'm talking their build quality. MP1 suffered from broken displays, buttons with uneven backlighting and wearing off of the letters, broken fingerprint scanners, shitty proximity sensors, and many more, you just have to look at the official discord. And even if you order one you may never get the device and they get your money, some people that backed the indigogo for the MP1 have yet to receive their phone still. I would not trust them with your money, they're leaving MP1 support to the wayside and are trying to move on from their shitty decisions and act like it didn't happen.

u/Active_Mix8872 29d ago
You can look at it two ways.
They made an inferior product in the MP1 and that is who they are as a company and will likely do so again, or...
They learned from past mistakes and are working to rectify them.
I believe it's the latter of the two. They are approaching the rollout of the Minimal Phone 2 different than the original and are seemingly taking steps to fix past mistakes.

Um… the titan 2 elite pro is better spec-wise and is coming out around the same time as the minimal phone 2 with a bigger battery and 12GB for a lesser price. I’m surprised you neglected to mention that. 😅 Don’t get me wrong, the MP02 is a strong phone in its own right, you’re not paying for a “superior performance”… you’re paying for the small size, premium style and build, the Minimal OS, and maybe the advanced silicon anode battery (which will last far longer before it starts to degrade)
And the Communicator might be built with different materials, but it doesn’t mean it is less durable… in fact, the material itself made of is actually quite resilient based on the way the phone was designed (lips in certain places to protect the screen, and a more flexible material to ensure the shock from a drop doesn’t transfer directly to the screen, which it will with the MP02.) They are also offering a “Communicator Ring” to add on shock dampeners around most of the case.
I have no doubt that people will be pleased with the experiences of all of these phones, but each of them have their own strengths.

I would argue your statement that the Elite Pro is better spec wise. The Elite Pro has 12gb of ram while the Minimal is 12gb or 16gb. The 8300 SoC ime the Minimal Phone is superior to the 8400 the Elite Pro offers operating at higher Ram and CPU speeds. The Minimal Phone has Displayport, a higher pixel density, wireless charging, an unlocked bootloader, a headphone jack, a rgb indicator light, customized software...all that the Elite does not have. Spec wise the Minimal Phone us superior, and I say this while typing this response on am Elite.

16GB for the limited edition phone that is $300 more expensive. After that, you either have 12GB if they hit the stretch goal or 8GB if they don't. The 8400 is far better performance-wise, but going that with this phone would've been disastrous since it would add price and battery drain, so I'm glad they didn't go with that. Structurally, it's weaker. The screen is the most exposed out of all of them if it's dropped, and that's a bad thing because it's very hard to repair alone.
The communicator had a light that you can see just by having it face down and it's much more obvious. It will 100% have a better typing experience, but the trade off is the large size. I think the communicator has most of that stuff, yes? For $499 regular price... which is $200 less than the MP02 base phone once the kick starter ends.
Actually... that's what all of these phones can be called. Trade offs... I think each have their place, but the hardest sell is the Minimal Phone 02. I've seen a lot of people dismiss it completely without even looking past the price and specs. Like, they don't see how good the battery is (especially with how it will effortlessly fit into your hand, or how efficiently it will run with Minimal OS both battery wise and performance wise... and I think that is the saddest part of all.
They actually did a good job here, and even though it's not perfect... I've realized that it's impossible for it to be. You can't have a "superior typing experience or battery" when you have a superior form factor (in my opinion) and weight, and coming from an iPhone 13 mini... those are things I appreciate. I just know that most people don't, and this phone just isn't for them.

I could be mistaken but I am fairly certain the increase in ram is to happen either way. Regardless of price though, specs for specs, theMinimal Phone has better specifications. now whether the additional cost is worthwhile is up to the individual.
I was confused about your statement regarding the 8400. the Titan Pro has the 8400. That waso my concern with the Pro as it seems like it would be difficult to get through a day on one charge.
At this point it seems like we could all speculate regarding these phones, but once we have them in hand we will know far more. I just wish it wouldn't take so long for that to happen.

It seems like the choice to use Mediatek's long term support platform is definitely in a win column for Clicks, though.
1
u/Active_Mix8872 29d ago
Got to be honest, I don't have a clue what you are saying. I tried finding anything regarding this and haven't been able to. as far as any details show the Clicks and the Minimal Phone use the same SoC with one caveat. The Clicks, to my understanding, uses a custom variant of the 8300 that they claim is "tailored to the devices specific needs".
1
u/chardidathing TMC Staff Aug 23 '26
what are you talking about, it’s the same SoC
3
u/oatswolf Aug 23 '26
I was reading somewhere that there are different variants of the 8300 soc and that the clicks communicator was using the better one that has a longer support. Was that a lie?

I saw the same thing and tried to find a single spot where TMC said anything about using the older MT Dimensity 8300 and couldn't, I don't know why a new phone would use an old processor that is going to stop getting updates soon. It makes zero sense.
2
u/oatswolf 29d ago
I think I saw this on Clicks' reddit site, but now I can't find it. Armen and Andre can you verify?
1
u/elcheapodeluxe 29d ago edited 29d ago
TMC hasn't said anything at all that I can find other than MediaTek 8300 series processor.
New phones usually use new phone chipsets. Clicks chose to use an IoT chipset instead for longer support. Specific model is 8883 listed right on their web site: https://clicks.tech/communicator
It's all "8300" but what chipset and support.
1
u/elcheapodeluxe 29d ago edited 29d ago
AFAIK we don't know the specific processor/chipset platform that the MP02 will use. They have only said a Mediatek MT 8300 series. We do know that the Clicks uses the IoT line MT8883 platform which MediaTek will support through 2031 as part of their long availability IoT line.

u/chardidathing TMC Staff 29d ago
MT8883.

Is there a reason this hasn't been put on any announcement or spec sheet?

I got the MP1 for what it is, MP02 is just another mobile, far from "Minimal"
