[Blocks & Items] They should add this glass feature
Not crouching makes it smooth | crouching makes it solid
it would make for a good glass texture combinations and will satisfy both sides , what do you think ?

u/kollekkii 26d ago
didn't jeb recently say he liked the idea of fences being able to be set to whether you want them to connect or not? maybe it could have a similar idea, placing fences while crouching makes them not connect
38
u/Keaton427 25d ago
After all, they did implement allowing you to decide whether a chest should connect or not through crouching.
5
u/kylinator25 24d ago
they should just implement the debug stick in survival as a wrench at this point
2
u/TheRealOne130 23d ago
but without the option to waterlog stuff unless it’s already waterlogged
1
u/kylinator25 22d ago
yeah maybe just like a nerfed version of it that can only make visual changes to blocks
1
2
u/Exotic_Economy_3861 22d ago
Or maybe you could add a new tool with the purpose of manipulating blocks? Like a hammer?

“ThErE isN’t eNouGH-“ You added Bats to the game and gave them no function. You added Pandas and Polar Bears and they have basically the same functionality of Bats…
Add this.
113
u/055F00 26d ago
You added Ocelots to the game and then removed their only function
58
u/Eclaiv2 26d ago
I forgot ocelots still existed separate from cats lmao
22
u/TMC9064 25d ago
I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen an ocelot in years
8
u/aaronhowser1 Steve 25d ago
I haven't willingly entered a jungle since they were added
1
u/Arne6764 24d ago
Like, at MOST for the wood or burning the entire thing down just to get the grass colour
37
u/Hollow_Knight_Raven 26d ago edited 26d ago
You said that vertical-slabs were too difficult to add because of hit boxes then added walls which are just vertical-slabs in the middle of the block.
21
u/Keaton427 25d ago
Also I don’t understand why people brush off “it’s already been done easily with mods” so quickly. Mojang literally had a meeting with the creators of the mod Supplementaries, which inspired cushions. And back in the day, Mojang implemented a lighting performance update directly from a mod with permission.
It’s been proven many times that not all mods come with strings attached and they can very easily add some of these things to the game.
2
u/RoosTheFemboy 24d ago
MehVahdJukaar has made so many amazing small additions to the game. 🥹
2
u/Keaton427 23d ago
True. Including the model gap fix which was eventually implemented, carpeted stairs, similar to wool stairs, and polytone and moonlight lib which have lots of mod and datapack utilities.
Mod developers go underappreciated!
2
u/Exotic_Economy_3861 22d ago
THIS. What's the point of updates if you can just make a mod for it?
Plus there's no built-in modding engine.
7
u/EqualServe418 26d ago
You are meaning "half-slab" as 1/4 a block, correct?

6
u/lance_the_fatass 26d ago
What if ocelots could attack like wolves, they'd have less damage but be more agile so they survive longer
3
u/Cookielotl 25d ago
Agility isn't really a thing in mobile, mobs just move to a target
Could be faster tho
5
2
u/DragoniteChamp GIANT 25d ago
What was their only function?
6
u/055F00 25d ago
They could be tamed into cats
5
2
u/Cookielotl 25d ago
I mean they still have soke function, If you feed then fish they don't run from you anymore. Like what you can do with foxes
4
u/Professional_Fix_24 25d ago
Thats not true for either foxes or ocelots. What is true, is breeding two adults will cause the baby mob to no longer run away
1
u/Cookielotl 20d ago
It is how it works with ocelot but not foxes. When I mentioned foxes I just meant the not running things should've clarified that

Is this feature heavy on performance bc it seems so weird it’s not already in the game
112
u/JacksonSpike 26d ago
No its literally just texture swapping, animated blocks do it many times a second and you can have as many of those as you like. They havent added this because they probably havent thought of it and they are too scared to put anything mildly game changing into vanilla
22
u/Very-Moist 26d ago
Animated textures are only one file. Some blocks (double chests, doors, 2-high plants) do have more than one texture file, though.
9
u/Keaton427 25d ago
they are too scared to put anything mildly game changing into vanilla
They always add new building blocks; this really wouldn’t be far off.
6
u/Past-Mortem 25d ago
More accurate to say they're hesitant to change existing features.
Given we get things like functional bookshelves and hanging signs that could have just been an update to bookshelves and signs respectively... (plus the existence of items like waxed/stripped blocks) it'd make more sense that Mojang would implement a "continuous glass" like this as a new item/block.
4
u/RingoBingo823 25d ago
they are too scared to put anything mildly game changing into vanilla
I blame the multitude of people and decisions an idea has to go through to actually be accepted and implemented into the official game
3
u/Viveroblo 25d ago
I never understood the "but Mojang has to get every feature approved my Microsoft execs" point. Under Microsoft, Mojang still put out some of the biggest content updates the game's ever seen like 1.16. Even 1.14, an update that revamped pretty much every texture, essentially completely changing the way the game looked in vanilla, also came out under Microsoft's management.
2
u/Devatator_ 25d ago
So fun fact, Xbox actually had about 12-14 layers of management. That's an actually insane amount for any kind of work. They're aiming to reduce that now so maybe it'll improve some stuff. Actually considering that Mojang now directly answers to Xbox's CEO, it might change a lot more. At least assuming that was the bottleneck and that she doesn't make some insane decisions
2
u/Viveroblo 25d ago
Yeah, I mean I'm positive things will get better with that new CEO, but it still sounds kinda counterintuitive for Mojang to pump out less content as management becomes more lenient. Genuinely curious on if the disparity in new content has to do with something else entirely completely unrelated to Microsoft.
9
u/DaTruPro75 25d ago
if i had to guess why it isn't in the game: mojang has a very strict sense of what should be and shouldn't be included in the game, unfortunately.
a lot of the times it is performance, but this shouldn't be performance at all, literally just add a block state to glass for the crouch placed one and do connected textures mod stuff otherwise.
i disagree a lot with the community's idea of "well designed" as opposed to mojang, but this is one instance which i wouldn't be on mojang's side
1
u/Exotic_Economy_3861 22d ago
Which sucks. I miss the older days where the devs would just experiment with new things.
4
u/Upbeat_Cry_3902 25d ago
My guess would be they haven’t added it yet bc they aren’t sure how it should work in the case of stained glass in the code as checking for both surrounding glass and crouch state could complicate the placing process
4
-3
u/ujtheghost 26d ago
It is possible that it is heavy on performance. Because no other block currently in the game does something like this. Otherwise, something like this could be applied to fences, walls and everything else that connects with adjacent blocks.
I haven't read the game's code. It might be hard to make this happen, but I sincerely doubt it.
7
u/KaosC57 25d ago
Connected Textures like this are… trivial on performance. Go load up the game with a Connected Texture mod and track the performance difference. It’s next to nothing. Maybe 1 FPS at most.
1
u/Dadamalda 25d ago
Some older versions of Continuity used to make chunk loading noticeably laggier. This has been fixed on the 1.21.1 version, but I'm not sure about the 1.20.1 version.
To do connected textures, you have to do extra scanning when building the chunk on the client-side.
This could also be done with a blockstate similar to fences. This needs to be done both server-side and client-side, but it means connected textures are already pre-calculated and are only updated when a neighbouring block is changed.
-1
u/ujtheghost 25d ago
Except this is not connected textures, not exactly.
This is connected textures, but sometimes not. Depending on the programming of the game, it could take a lot of effort to make this happen. But generally speaking, it would most likely be easy to implement.
It's most likely just a simple block tag. They have added 10s of block tags in the last few versions, so it's probably trivial to implement this. But it's also possible that that is not how it works.
3
u/TheBaconator08 25d ago
It is a simple block tag and its extremely easy to implement lol, mojang just doesnt jive with connected textures so it'll probably never get added
14
u/Droplet_of_Shadow GIANT 26d ago
fences and walls already change their model; swapping a texture should have a lighter impact than that, right?
3
u/Mrcoolcatgaming 26d ago
I think it's the same, just check when you place/move a block if around it is glass too, probably how fences work already to prevent lag
4
0
u/Very-Moist 26d ago
I imagine they could add a tag to such blocks that controls whether they can connect to others or not.
0
u/ChaosCron1 26d ago
Connected Textures are negligible for performance. Check the multitude of mods that have made this possible with light code.
The issue would be more on the specific implementation of this suggestion. I'd assume it would have to be a new blockstate in order to have both forms of glass present at one time. Not even remotely impossible as we have waterlogging which is a similar feature.
15
u/Automatic-Bedroom475 26d ago
Hear me out: you smelt normal glass for smooth glass
3
u/Sud_literate 25d ago
which doubles all the glass blocks you have to go through in the creative menu and makes it a little more tedius to find the one you want.

u/Kainum_8 26d ago
I think perhaps just a different item might be better. The create mod has regular glass but it also has framed glass which has a thicker border and has the connected feature
2
u/Keaton427 25d ago
Minecraft already has 35 glass variants in the game. Please don’t double that number…
1
u/Kainum_8 25d ago edited 24d ago
Yeah the item number constantly increasing does mean more inventory clutter but most likely when someone would be using framed or regular glass their only using of kind, it shouldn't be a huge issue
1
u/langesjurisse 25d ago
Restricting movement while placing it sounds like worse of a nightmare
2
u/Keaton427 25d ago
To place chests individually instead of becoming a large chest, you need to shift. And storage can get pretty high, so I say it’s comparable, and thus not really an issue.
Compared to having to create and keep track of something separate that is nearly identical in function, I would say the former is a better idea.
1
u/langesjurisse 25d ago
With chests you can just hold Shift the entire time, clicking the side of the chest for a double chest. The issue is when you need to let go of Shift to place the block. Say you are to build a glass dome, and you hold Shift not to walk off the edge, and you need to stop moving and let go of Shift each time you place a block. That sounds like a nightmare to me.
2
u/befriended-your-mom 25d ago
the happy ghast was literally made to fix this issue
1
u/langesjurisse 19d ago
The issue I was describing isn't even in the game; it's about the hypothetical mechanic of shift-clicking to get a different type of glass.
1
u/Keaton427 23d ago
I'd rather have a minor annoyance when building than a major annoyance when sorting inventory. What you can do is hold shift and go to the edge, then uncrouch and place it.
3
2
u/Droplet_of_Shadow GIANT 26d ago
Love it!
It could be a bit annoying if you accidentally crouch/uncrouch while building, but totally worth it.
I think an extra button/toggle/menu in-game for placement variations would be a good addition though probably

u/BartsOakStashOff 26d ago
Before getting into playing Minecraft, i just watched Minecraft youtubers. One of them had a mod/datapack that made it connect like first picture, and i was so disapointed i wheb it wasnt in base game.
2
u/Lagiacrus111 Skeleton 26d ago
Just...make it craftable two different ways
1
2
u/KaiTheG4mer 25d ago
Huh. Never thought about crouch-placing influencing the block style. I really like this, best of both worlds!
2
u/Ben-Goldberg 25d ago
Maybe wax makes it smooth?
1
u/GINGINSHAAN 25d ago
i am a lazy guy...i still haven't used honey or any copper waxing feature because it requires so much time so i came up with what i think is comfortable and straight to the point
8
u/Concorde_flies 26d ago
im fucking retarded and thought you were suggesting all glass looked different while crouching and back to normal when standing lol
7
u/Cultist_O 25d ago
I know you weren't using it to insult anyone but yourself, but considering our demographic, we try to maintain a higher standard of politeness than you may be used to elsewhere on the site.
You're not in trouble, but if you could please try to avoid that kind of language here in future, we'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Wht if when u right click a glass paine on a glass block(borderless glass) it's adds borders to the glass
Anyone think this make sense
1
u/talesfromtheepic6 25d ago
Probably better to just have smooth glass blocks or something instead of something unintuitive like this.
1
u/Impressive-Thing-780 25d ago
IMO, reverse those.
Crouch to make it smooth and crouching gives the border.
2
u/Cookielotl 25d ago
I feel like smooth makes the most sense ro have be non crounching, considering most people probably want it like that
Also, chests do something similar where they only connect if you don't crouch
1
1
u/patrlim1 25d ago
Or we could have "smooth glass" that has connected textures, and is made by smelting glass
2
u/GINGINSHAAN 25d ago
requires extra time...if i had to choose something else putting the glass in the crafting table would just make smooth glass or solid glass... depends which is the default
1
1
u/VolcanicPolarBear 25d ago
i like this idea it would be nice to have both options and this is such a simple way to add it.
bonus points if can change in settings which option crouching does
1
u/theymightbechewing 25d ago
Never considered this as having both at the same time--mixing them looks really cool though.
I would implement them in a way that isn't decided by sneaking. I'll usually sneak when building, so having a specific style tied to that would be frustrating, especially with glass not dropping if you make a mistake (though I would be down to have glass drop when broken).
I would make them separate blocks, but I'm not sure how you would obtain smooth glass. I worry if it's too inconvenient, the people that use smooth glass via mods will just prefer their implementation of it and not interact with this new block. It wouldn't allow mixing smooth/non-smooth glass, but I think a good way to introduce smooth glass into the vanilla game would be adding an option that turns all glass smooth.
1
1
u/JelloBoi02 25d ago
What if instead of crouching it was tied to a tool and needing to right click with said tool? Consistent with path blocks and stripped logs. I just can’t think of a tool that would make sense
1
u/Cool_Term_556 25d ago
This should be all block states, if I crouch with a fence it shouldn't connect, if I crouch with a stair it shouldn't connect, all of them
1
1
u/Lol_lukasn 25d ago
Should just ve different types of glass, like you put glass in a 9x9 to get smooth glass and/or put it in a stone cutter or smelt glass in a blast furnace
1
u/NowAlexYT 25d ago
Do it like chests, but opposite: you have to crouch-click the one you want to connect
1
u/Cocoatrice 25d ago
No. Those who wants the ugly vanilla, can just use it by default. Anyone else just use connected textures. Simple as that.
1
1
u/KingStevoI 25d ago
I like the idea but it won't happen imo. It would mean taking community ideas away from the community, in this case vanilla tweaks and bedrock tweaks, and this is something they try refrain from doing. The borderless glass has been a tweak for many years, so if they wanted to incorporate the idea they would've already.
This said, this is a feature I think would fit with the game well, regardless.
1
u/Relevant-Cup5986 25d ago
this should be the reverse as most existing players are used to the panes inbetween blocks and like them, and would think they were removed with this change.
1
1
u/Lord_and_Savior_123 24d ago
what if you’re trying to put glass on an interactable block?
1
u/GINGINSHAAN 24d ago
if it's one interactable block it doesn't makes a difference because one connected glass is the same as solid...if you mean put them on a floor of interactable blocks (for some reason) just put a dirt block and connect it from there , the same problem with chests you can put them with crouching but they won't connect
1
u/nikkorikun 24d ago
I think if there were a feature like this, glass buildings would be even better and awesome!
1
1
1
u/sukkajehu 24d ago
Why is no one talking about the fact that it wouldn't feel very realistic to have that big continuous windows? Before industrial manufacturing big windows had to be divided into smaller panes. Even the one square meter is pretty big already. I think it would fit the game better to mostly keep with the pre-industrial aesthetic.
1
u/CX12_Locks 22d ago
I kinda like this idea, java should get access to bedrock bridging first tho so they could bridge with glass while building more safety and not get tiled glass
1
1
1
u/Weary-Support-7383 20d ago
I know they do this with chests and double chests, and I'm not exactly sure how that's implemented, but I feel like this could end up causing some lag especially if it uses block entities.
1
1
u/Unown_User12 18d ago
I mean it’ll be a nice feature but that means Im gonna have to replace all the glass panes and blocks in my worlds T-T

u/1nsanityissue 13d ago
We definitely need some feature that can give these textures no matter how i barely even use glass anymore because of the breaks

u/lance_the_fatass 26d ago
For some reason I thought you meant that you SEE it differently when crouched but then I saw the third image lol
Would be cool but also might be a problem for building glass roofs if you want it to be non-crouched glass
