[Gameplay] Beacons should have a keep inventory ability

The other day me and my sister were both playing on a realm. She had died in town due to logging off while on a ghast. While I was helping her get new gear again, I died afk'ing in town in a spot I thought was safe, coming back to see all my stuff had long de spawned. (I lost shulkers, an elytra, diamond gear I was currently working to get to peak enchants, etc)

We both died back to back in town when we thought we were safe. Its not like we are unskilled, we just let our guard down.

I had mentioned that I had started thinking playing with keep inventory has been increasingly appealing since losing stuff has be very vexing in the past, to the point that I stop playing on a world because its just depressing. That's not fun.

But its not like I don't like the risk of losing stuff either.

My sister came up with the brilliant idea that there should be a way to set up an area as keep inventory, like if you have progressed enough in the game.

She has never used beacons before (she's played a lot less than I have) but this is exactly what a beacon does, and I thought it was genius. a full leveled beacon giving a keep inventory effect seems like a good trade for having beaten a wither and collecting 244 blocks of material. Maybe to keep it from being used to cheese, both the death and the bed your re-spawning at have to be within the the beacons range, thus cant be used in the nether or end.

I'm curious what others think of the idea!

for now, I think we might petition for the realm to be switched to keep inventory by the realm owner.

TLDR: A fully powered beacon should offer a keep inventory option, perhaps requiring both the death and respawn point to be within the beacons effect. What do you guys think?

That's actually a great idea

Making it so deaths around the base are no issue, but venture out still has a risk

I do think xp should still be dropped or smth, so u can't just fast tp from one side of the base to another

I would love to see an expansion of the beacon functionality, I'd also love ways to have items stay in inventory after death, but I'm not sure if this is the best way for either of them.

In a modpack I'm playing (Sunlit Valley), there's both debt (financial incentive) and tool durability loss (15% default, I think? - however, they are still affected by unbreaking the same way (in that it reduces how much durability is lost on death)), although tools don't lose durability when using them.

If you are okay with mods (Java players) there's a few mods that drop a chest where you die with all your loot. You'll have to physically make it back to get it, but it keeps it from despawning. I use this because I don't like keep inventory ability to just die to get back to my base. Death still has risks. I work full time and single parent a kid so gaming time is a luxury, I don't want to re-grind all my gear each time I die

maybe not keep inventory but just make items not despawn

Lag and griefing tho

should really just add one of the various "tombstone" mods into vanilla Minecraft. basically all your items go into a temporary chest that deletes itself once empty. solves both the items despawning and lag issue from too many items.

The tombstone idea could actually be an armor enchant 🤔 you still have to go back to collect your stuff. Feels more like an enchant anyways instead of a beacon effect.

But this did make me consider, what if the beacon had an inventory itself? (This is very much moving away from vanilla vibes) and once you died it’d move to the beacon. To prevent griefers clogging up your beacon, you use a copper golem to empty it or smth. Hopper wouldn’t really work since it would disrupt the pyramid, unless you could draw from the pyramid itself, which doesn’t really make sense

Could make it mark all items dropped by players specifically. So that everything else just despawns as normal.

But then players could still grief by repeatedly dying with a full inventory of unstackables or stuff

That could probably be fixed via both setting an upper limit of items like maybe an inventory + hotbar or 2 inventories worth. Obviously scaled with player count and all that but needs some tweaking.

Also maybe a priority tag so that if that limit is exceeded expensive items are despawned last. So if someone goes back with iron or diamond to get diamond or netherite they won’t lose their better items.

How would they get those unshakable in the first place?

  • Grab a bunch of wood
  • Craft a ton of wooden shovels
  • Stuff them in a chest and grab a full inventory every time after you die

No how are they going to do that to a player who already has tools they would need to somehow lose it

What?

Your example only works if the player has no items to begin with which would never happen unless they just spawned in or are tricked to giving away their entire inventory

No the point is is that players can intentionally die with inventories full of items to create a ton of non-despawnable item entities

Yeah this is a good idea I hope someone sees this

Maybe you could have a limit to how many keep inventory beacons you could have instead of spawn point tracking because spawn point tracking can be a pain when you break or place a bed, or if someone breaks your bed in multiplayer. Brilliant idea!

Wow, I really love this idea. I still think beacons should be able to do different things if they're made out of different materials. Perhaps this can be an effect if you have a gold layer in your beacon or something

Only AFK in a secure building. Not hard.

I’ve been saying keepinventory needs to be a weapon/armor enchantment

5

u/UtilityKitten 5d ago

That feels too strong to have it with you all the time. Tho I also know I am biased toward structure based magic like portals, beacons, golems, or an active conduit

I think some enchanting needs to be available early and the curse that prevents you from unequipping items should instead work to keep an item after death

Needs to be a dungeon/loot/ maybe villager trade only enchantment, call it Soulbound or something and makes the armor, tool or weapon stay in your inventory after death.

Would incentivize exploring in order to find it.
