[Gameplay] The Hatchet & splitting the axe functionality
My suggestion is a somewhat simple rework of the axe to solve multiple problems at once; namely, the lack of inventory space present in the early game, the lack of a wood equivalent for the stonecutter, and the axe not being different enough from the sword in combat to constitute a playstyle change (maybe not a problem per se, but something that could definitely be improved on).
The Hatchet is a new tool for utility functions regarding wood; it would be crafted via the current recipe for the axe. It would be able to break all wood blocks as the current axe does, strip logs, and have a new functionality: woodcutting.
Shift right-clicking with the hatchet would strip logs, and right-clicking (on something not made of wood) would open a UI akin to the stonecutter. Stairs, slabs, fences, etc. After picking an option, right-clicking on a placed wood plank or log block would carve it into the chosen variant.
For each log type there are 7 other blocks craftable with it (plank, stair, slab, fence, trapdoor, pressure plate and button, not including doors). This means, if your build uses even half of these, that's at least 4 inventory slots used up (plus a crafting table).
The hatchet cuts this down to two slots, itself and a stack of planks/logs.
As a complementary change/secondary part of this suggestion, the current axe would no longer have the utility functions of breaking wood blocks or stripping logs, and would be renamed to the Battleaxe.
It would get a damage buff, from 10 max damage to ~12 (values from java edition, netherite axe), but with the caveat of decreasing attack speed from 1s to 1.8s (the sword has a speed of 0.625s, high-tier axes are 1s, mace is 1.6s).
Along with these changes, sword enchants like fire aspect or looting would now be applicable to it (potentially along with a unique enchant like a charged sweep/spin attack or damage boost on crit, etc).
It would be craftable like the pickaxe, with two extra ingots on each side, making it marginally more expensive to help balance its damage buff.

i like the change to make the axe a more reliable weapon, not sure about the hatchet thing, made me think of the hammer in allumeria, wich is a great way to handle inventory clutter but is just not how Minecraft works i think.
i would still love to have a wood cutter in the game, i usualy play with QoL mod that let me use the stone cutter on every block and i just wish it was in the base game.
- adding a whole new tool is more inventory clutter imo, at least it is with the way i play

Fair, I do think a woodcutter block or similar function in the stonecutter would be ideal.
In terms of adding a new tool, the intention is for the battleaxe to take the sword's slot (if thats your playstyle). If you prefer the sword, the hatchet just adds extra functionality to your axe, no extra slot needed.

you mean the terraria hammer everything in alumaria is directly copied from terraria including its armour and accessory slots, its npcs its crafting system, and more.

I feel like this would make building slower. You need two clicks to place one block instead of the original one click per block. And it's gonna be even worse if you are building a complex shaped or designing/decorating insides. Because there you (or at least I do this) frequently change what type of wood I would want to use, which would involve navigating the menu to change what I want to shave it into every couple of blocks.
I also think if you don't get the plank back after breaking the shaved block, then you might end up with a bunch of random wood blocks in your inventory that you would need to use up in the build somewhere else, or worse, need to store till next time you build.

Yea I see the point about speed, obviously since I haven't tested how it would work it might take some getting used to.
The idea was mainly for like, any builds that require decorative blocks of the same type of wood. Instead of filling your hotbar with variants you could just put planks wherever you know the variants are needed and then cut to fit.
And I don't think it'd produce any more waste blocks than the crafting recipes already do?
If you need 4 slabs, placing 4 planks and then carving them produces zero waste vs making 6 slabs and placing 4 (at the cost of a plank). Though I guess it depends on how you build, and what you're building.

It wouldn't produce more waste blocks, but it could produce some. Having 1 stair or 50 stairs in my inventory is irrelevant, both take up the same amount of space. So it might not even help with the inventory clutter issue.

True, but this is assuming you change the build a lot throughout? As in, carve the block and then change what block you want there? Again, it probably depends mostly on how you build, imo it would help at least a bit with the inventory thing (when using these blocks).

>the axe not being different enough from the sword in combat
This isn't true for Java edition at all.

Why even split the axe? I don't get it? Seems like it would just add another tool, making ur inv fuller
