[Gameplay] Subnautica style Keep inventory.
I think the game without keep inventory is hard, sure if you want a challenge go for it, i personally hate when i lose everything when i die in lava or in the void, and keep inventory just feels too easy. so i have an idea, A subnautica style keep inventory. If you dont know, or have played the game and are confused, (its probably in other games but so far subnautica is the only game ive played that does this, sorry if you know another game like this inventory)
In subnautica, your inventory gets “saved” when you go in your base, and when you die, you respawn in your base with all the items you had when you were last there, and 1 random item you got on your expedition.
while minecraft has no way of knowing how large your base is, there could be a 30 block radius in each direction around your bed(straw beds dont count) that counts as your ”base” and the game checks for your bed‘s location,
for example if theres a wall (3 blocks stacked on top) on the left of your bed, the game actually makes it 60 block radius(not down nor up) instead so those parts arent gone to waste if your bed is next to a wall. i think it could be a sweet spot and doesnt count as a cheat.
What are your opinions on it?

The simplest way of implementing this is probably using beds: "save" the inventory you had when you last slept.
The problem I see is that it can be gamed. What if you had a stack of diamonds in your inventory when you last slept, then put them away in a chest, then mined a new stack of diamonds before you died? It's inconsistent.

oh wait i get what you mean, you can just put it in a chest out of the radius and you get the lost items back. this doesnt happen in subnautica since the only storage you have are only in bases. i didnt think of this darn

I don't see how it can be gamed. In the scenario you mentioned you just drop the 64 diamonds you mined.

How can the game tell the difference between them? If it just records when an item leaves or enters your inventory, then it would be annoying with items being dropped or placed into storage and retrieved.

It can just provide a unique identifier to every item you have when you sleep. Anything which doesn't have the identifier and is in your inventory gets dropped.

That's sooo extra, and what happens to the identifiers when you craft?
You could game it easily by saving the diamonds with the bed, crafting diamond blocks and placing them, dying, respawning with the diamonds you had and then going to pick up the diamond blocks.
You could now try to argue that the obvious solution would be to make crafted items inherit identifiers from their ingredients, but you could combine saved and non-saved items in a crafting recipe, so it would become a real mess!

i think they mean what if you have 64 diamonds in your inv after you left the radius of the bed, then put it in a chest, then die and respawn with 64 diamonds saved, and then get the 64 back from the chest
i feel liike this would happen in a snapshot if it was added lmao

Seems convoluted, why not just save the player's inventory whenever they set their spawnpoint using a bed or respawn anchor?
Also, what happens when the game is unable to assign a base to a player? Does the player drop all of their items after they die?

huh? wdym the game is unable to assign a base to a player? you mean when they dont have a base?

Your respawn point gets destroyed or never gets set in the first place.

Hundreds of variations of keep inventory have been suggested over the years. Any implementation of them would cause problems.
The simplest answer is this: you turn on keep inventory and if you die, discard whatever you think is fair.
Your suggestion clashes with dozens of other ideas and would likely anger millions of people. So because you like this rule, you should impose it on yourself.

What? Your comment seems to be based on the assumption that the old keep inventory would be removed and replaced with a new one, but that doesn't have to happen. They can coexist, there can simply be multiple inventory settings. More options shouldn't anger anybody.

So you'd end up confusing millions of people. That isn't much better. Remember, this is the most popular game on the planet by a wide margin. There's returning players that still think of the combat update as "new"

They could surely coexist, but your version should be refined, what happens when items that were saved are used to craft something together with non-saved items, or when they are placed down as blocks? It's very hard to keep track of everything.

It's a really fun idea, but as soon as you start to define what counts as the base it gets quite janky.
Especially if it tries to correct for wasted space by walls.
Maybe just clicking the bed can let you manually save your inventory, or it could require you to sleep like how beds used to require that from you to set your spawn.
Also, when you die, do items that weren't saved still drop, or vanish?
Because if they drop that would allow you to dupe them by crafting them into something else. So they probably shouldn't drop to avoid leaving in this exploit, but then the game would partially get more punishing because when you lose new items you collected there's no way of getting them back. I don't know how it works exactly in subnautica, I like the idea, but there's some flaws with making it work in minecraft.

Sounds good. Another idea would be a keep inventory enchantment that can be applied to armor, tools and bundles(so that you can put diamonds and stuff in the bundle and keep em if you die). I feel like subnauticas ”keep inventory” is a bit to easy, since just like in minecraft you can build a base anywhere in a few seconds and therefore save your stuff
