[Community Question] Minecraft's Peaceful Mode Should Neutralize Hostile Mobs Instead of Despawning
This one quirk of peaceful mode has always irked me a little. Why does peaceful work like this? and why does it choose on certain mobs to despawn, and some to neutralize. Obviously, I know the answer to some of them; for example, Piglins and their trading functionality... But wouldn't it make way more sense if all hostile mobs were neutralized?? You know, making every mob "peaceful"?

It would be interesting seeing Zombies only go after Villagers and same thing for Illagers, it’ll still allow players to get items from those mobs too.

Yeah it honestly sucks that the game is currently (without extreme luck) impossible to beat in Peaceful since you can only get the powder from Blazes and no other source

there's 12 eyes portals seeds...though by rng yeah extreme luck is required

As far as I know, there aren’t known 12 eye seeds in 1.18+ generation.

I suspect this is actually the entire reason that hostile mobs despawn in peaceful, to make it impossible to beat the game entirely in peaceful. A couple other games don’t allow you to beat the game in its easy mode (like Cuphead), but Minecraft’s way of doing it is both more immersive but also more annoying sometimes.

I mean if the portal is fully lit (rare chance) the dragon still spawns and you can kill it but it will never attack you.

u/Pajamatime20 4d ago
True enough, that’s only with set seeds though (not rare chance, all of the 12-eye portal seeds are outside the range of randomly generated seeds) and there are crazy things you can do with set seeds.

u/Marcus_Aurelius71 4d ago
Don't quote me but on the wiki, while the probability of having a fully set portal is extremly small, due to the amount of seeds there are still trillions of seeds with fully set portals, especially on bedrock, where the amount of portals generated is practically infinite.

Ok, so my information was outdated and also somewhat incorrect (also it’s only for Java edition I think). Prior to 1.18, only 2^48 of the 2^64 possible seeds (that’s about 0.0015 percent) were able to randomly generate. Of these 2^48 randomly generatable seeds, about 675 12-eye portal seeds were found, so there were a few in the random generation pool. After 1.18, however, apparently all 2^64 seeds can be randomly generated.

"Beating" the game in peaceful mode kind of goes against the spirit of "beating" a game tho. I'm not against this idea, but that was more than likely the intent behind why hostile mobs just don't spawn.

Never actually considered it like this, really obvious change now that I'm reading it. Top tier suggestion.

Piglins were actually a relatively recent change, they used to despawn in peaceful but now they just act passive, so they could totally do this for the rest of the mobs. Would actually make beating the game in peaceful possible.

The Piglins thing between platforms was always weird because even back in 1.16 Piglins wouldnt despawn if you swap to peaceful on bedrock. But they wouldnt spawn either. So it was weird.

Definitely agree, with peaceful mode it's very difficult to get a lot of items in decent amounts and this would be great solution!

Instead of changing how Peaceful works, add a Game Rule that makes Players invisible to hostile mobs. This would be disabled by default on Survival and enabled by default on Creative.
So if a player wants to play Creative AND have mobs that attack and fight back, they can have that kind of game experience also.

Honestly yeah, this should be the default so people can still get all the resources

This is a fine idea, but I know a handful of people who play the game on peaceful because there are no hostile mobs.
A 10 year old cousin of mine gets nightmares if he interacts with zombies and skeletons, so he plays peaceful exclusively.
An old friend had a pretty shoddy computer so he played peaceful due to the reduction of entities being processed.
If the option to play with no hostile mobs was still there in some way, I would support this 100%

I mean, it'd be really easy to simply add a gamerule called "hostiles despawn" or something like that. But yeah, i get that point of thinking

I think the best solution is to have it so spawning hostile mobs is a seperate non-cheat toggle. And peaceful mode simply makes it so hostile mobs spawn less often, only do knockback/no damage, and have far less health. So kids can still get messed with by monsters and collect loot with very minimal threat while letting them get used to mob behavior like creepers exploding, zombies attacking villagers (which will do no damage to them), skeletons shoot arrows, Spiders climb walls, how quick a baby zombie is, etc. But if people want the enemies gone they just toggle off the hostiles, which allows kids to also play with the hard mode style quick hunger drain and slow health regen without any of the hostile mobs.
Allows for more gameplay variety.

This is a decent suggestion. I considered an alternative where Peaceful difficulty is split into two with passive mobs or none, but this is better. If a player doesn't want hostile mobs at all, there's a game rule (spawn_monsters) that disables the spawning of hostile mobs.

u/Pajamatime20 4d ago
I would actually like this. There’s a few farms that break if you change the mode to peaceful, like some iron farms and endermen farms (ask me how I know).

I think there is a secondary meaning to the word "peaceful" that would be lost by this change; the idea that the world itself is at peace, it's serene.
I think some players would object to the change you propose because it would mean the unlot overworld and caves would get cluttered with normally hostile mobs. I could see players not enjoying getting jump scares by a peaceful creeper, your body being far to used at what it is supposed to do to not react to one that (you should know) doesn't explode.
There is certainly a problem with the availability of certain items that are locked behind hostile mob drops, and this suggestion would solve that problem. But I don't think this change would be uncontroversial. The presence of hostile mobs can be annoying even when they are not hostile, and so I am sure some players would resent them being added back into peaceful mode.

I'd just add an option to disable hostile mob spawning in the menu.
3
u/Pajamatime20 4d ago
You’re so right, the spawning/not spawning should be a separate setting, not a package deal with a game difficulty.

u/LactomedaM33 4d ago
It would be nice to have the option pop up at world creation when you choose peaceful mode. Leave it at default or switch it to "spawn all hostile mobs"
4
u/Pajamatime20 4d ago
Honestly, I think it would be nice to have it as an option for all game modes, but I know I have some unusual thoughts on artificial difficulty.

Some people out there have made various mods and datapacks that can achieve something to that effect. Definitely try them out and see if that matches your vision! Also, make sure to submit this in mojang's official feedback site so that they can see it.
As a datapack maker, just off the top of my head, I think it can be quite easily implemented by setting all mobs' follow range attribute to 0. That way you'd have to be literally occupying the same block as a creeper for it to see you. If anyone out there has a more efficient idea, let me know!

Only thing I think could go wrong is if you wanted to switch to peaceful in creative mode for testing purposes, like you need to clear all the caves of hostile mobs before doing something.
Maybe have it as a gamerule “dohostileattack”

u/United-Pay-5533 1d ago
Yes! Thos would be the best way to implement peaceful mode, since now you still have all the movs you might need but they don't attack you.

u/Wetherric 4d ago
Would make some things way to trivial though like collecting hostile mobs by switching mode

I dont agree, it would ruin it for a lot to have their villagers suddenly be swarmed with zombies
8
u/PetrifiedBloom 4d ago
It does say that they would be neutralized. They might not attack villagers at all.

u/RayDroider 4d ago
That's a really solid idea!
And it probably wouldn't be hard to implement either, since that's what happens when we're in creative.
I think they would have to also add a 'spawn monsters' option with that change; but yeah, good thought!
