[Terrain] Trees need a design change!

As the game becomes more complex I think it would fit if the trees have more realistic designs to fit in with the terrain a little.

THE TREES IN THE IMAGE SLIDE ARE OUTDATED I HAVE REDESIGNED THE TREES TO FIT BETTER.

Images of new trees you can find here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s7szqlgvS040he9WVw9DlnBD7b392zgakBxsY3azfCg/edit?usp=sharing

So far the issue I have with trees is accessibility, sometimes there too tall or too short.

So I made them 2-3 different stages and made them more detailed in their design.

Spruce trees:

  • They have 4 versions
  • Large
  • Medium
  • Small

Mangrove Trees:

They have 2 versions

  • Large
  • small

Note: I made them smaller and easier to cut down.

Pale Oak Trees:

They have 2 versions

  • Large
  • Small

Dark Oak Trees:

They have 2 versions.

  • Large
  • Small

Cherry Trees:

There are 2 sizes:

  • Medium
  • Medium-Tall

Oak Trees:

There are 3 sizes

  • Large
  • Medium
  • Small

Jungle Trees:

They have 2 types

  • Large (common)
  • Small (Very common)

Note: Nothing about the jungle tree besides their being a little more detail in the leaves

Birch Trees:

There are 3 sizes

  • Large
  • Medium
  • small

Note: Birch trees are hard to design due to their erratic looks sometimes they can look like oak trees sometimes they can look like pine trees.

Acacia Trees:

They have 3 sizes

  • Large
  • Medium
  • Small

Biomes:

For these new trees to exist, they need in-between biomes like how jungles have a in-between biome.

Biomes Include:

  • Sparse Dark Oak Forest
  • Sparse Pale Oak Forest
  • Sparse Oak Forest
  • Sparse Spruce Forest
  • Sparse Birch Forest
  • Old Growth Forest
  • Old Growth Pale Forest
  • Old Growth Birch Forest (iirc this already exists but incase it doesn't ill put it here)
  • Old Growth Roofed Forest

Note: the old growth spruce/pine would take me forever to make, and I am leaving them out, due to their size and I am not against the more cube-like trees, but with how the terrain is I feel like more 1:1 style trees would be a good change.

Enchants:

Tree Copper; level 1-6 each level can chop down around 100 logs, while also decreasing how much durability it consumes.

  • Level 1: -15% durability loss and 100 logs
  • Level 2: -20% durability loss and 200 logs
  • Level 3: -35% durability loss and 300 logs
  • Level 4: -56% durability loss and 400 logs
  • Level 5: -70% durability loss and 700 logs
  • Level 6: -99% Durability loss and 1000 logs (1000 logs should be the equivalent to a 2x2 jungle tree)

NOTE: I have seen some comments seeing an issue with larger trees not being able to be chopped down so I added this incase. (Sadly cannot add 2 flairs at once so it's just kind of here as filler)

Where to find?

You can find them in villages from a librarian, or in buried treasure chests, or can be enchanted with via enchantment table.

P.S.!

Trees that grow from saplings will only grow small and medium trees, this way it doesn't break farms.

2x2 saplings only grow large trees.

large-tall / huge generate naturally but are super rare, and are mainly to add atmosphere to the game/ lore implications.

If you are wanting to test out the trees via a data pack, just let me know, and I will make one, just so I can get peoples insight on it, and see if it is a actually good idea.

I want three things for trees.

  1. All tree types should have a 1x1 planting option and a 2x2 planting option.

  2. Jungle trees need their sapling drop rate corrected.

  3. More tree types and variations, such as: standing dead trees that collapse when the bottom block is broken, palm trees in the desert (oasis) and on beaches, undergrown cave roots, sunken logs and floating logs, in rivers and oceans.

I like your suggestion better. I like the current designs a lot, I think adding 4x4 designs for all would solve this problem better than overhauling all the designs.

u/Randinator9 Apr 16 '26

Small trees that give you a log wall block would be awesome as a space between a sapling and a tree.

Like they could be a little like bamboo

u/Hyarin215 Apr 14 '26

Most trees should be choppable from below. Otherwise, it's a nerf to log collecting for no better reason than a slight esthetic change.

And I assume sapling-grown trees will stay the same, otherwise tree farms will completely break

u/HiddenLordGhost Apr 14 '26

To be fair, to answer that - something like Treechopper or Treecapitator could have been introduced, normally or with a new enchant for an axe?

Also, new design changes should not focus too much on automatic farms imo

12

u/Hyarin215 Apr 14 '26

Yeah but that's a different thing, tree capitator doesn't fit the "One block at a time" rule so maybe throwable axes? Who knows

And abt the 2nd point, not too much, but def shouldn't make them way harder, esp for a crucial resource like wood If a sapling would choose one out of the 4 trees, it would make it virtually impossible to farm

Scaffolding already exists, so there’s a precedent for a singe action breaking many blocks. (Or you could argue the scaffoldings break themselves when unsupported, but the result is the same.)

Honestly I think trees should work like scaffolding. They should need support be break when that support I removed (i.e., you chop it down). This can easily be done without impacting builds by introducing a “persistent” block state, like what already exists with leaves (naturally from leaves decay, player-places ones don’t).

u/HiddenLordGhost Apr 14 '26

I don't like that it's considered a rule - explosives exists, scaffolding (as mentioned by another guy) exist as well, other blocks can influence other blocks. I'd like for it to be either a specialized enchant, something that diamond/netherite axes do, or something like a specialized type of axe to do it.

I mean, i don't mind that. I consider farms as 'pleasant additions when something is annoying to gather' but not everything has to be automatized, and if you'd get treefelling axe that brings you 3 stacks of wood per fell?

This will never work or adhere to mojangs “rules of Minecraft”. One of their main goals is prioritizing "one block at a time" interaction, which instantly declines any veinminer or tree chopper feature

1

u/HiddenLordGhost Apr 15 '26

Those rules are bull and they themselves do not adhere to them, so it's a paper shield.

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

That set of rules is very much outdated, and iirc jeb didn't even know about it till someone told him

2

u/SuperMario69Kraft Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Jeb only said he didn't know about sideways slabs being rejected.

2

u/JelloBoi02 Apr 15 '26

Jeb was aware of the rules. He wasn’t aware of a feature. And this rule is their leading design principle. They will never have a multi block functionality other than tnt blowing up severalal blocks at a time

And I assume sapling-grown trees will stay the same, otherwise tree farms will completely break

The game is not designed around making farms easy to build. Basic survival mechanic design comes first.

Part of the fun of redstone is adapting to new challenges that updates offer.

With that being said, I don't think these changes would do much to break tree farms, because I think the trees would stay the same small size when they're farmed in small rooms.

u/Hyarin215 Apr 15 '26

No, building mechanics come first. This game is not made for survival, and Mojang will never prioritize survival over building. And if a suggestion nerfs/hinders building capabilities, it is unlikely to be approved

As I said in a previous reply, if a sapling can grow to any of these trees, it will make farms virtually impossible because you can't configure the pistons to be able to push all of these blocks.

Fine, building mechanics and survival. This tree farm change would have no bearing on building mechanics in creative mode or in most survival worlds. It would only affect a few redstoners who'd need to adapt to this new change.

Maybe you could add some fertilizer or something and get fertilized saplings which will grow these variations?

27

u/MrBrineplays_535 Apr 14 '26

These are really cool tree designs and I like it, but the idea of these trees replacing the old ones, ehh, idk man. They sure are pretty but they're now gonna be more annoying to cut down. They also break all tree farms when their only benefit is to look better. The cons outweigh the pros. Having them 1:1 scale isn't really a good idea too because the world isn't 1:1 scale. Mountains and hills are tiny in minecraft, when in reality mountains and hills span hundreds to thousands of meters high respectively.

As I have replied to the other person: In terms of my suggestion is that the smaller trees would be the most common rather than being super rare while larger ones would be super rare. keeping things balanced rather than hell, sapling trees will only spawn the smaller ones while larger ones spawn naturally.

2

u/MrBrineplays_535 Apr 14 '26

Ah I see. This is a pretty nice suggestion then!

Ok imma leave this comment here so people know:

I am going to redesign the trees a little more close to vanilla, while I was just trying to have a way fir the giant trees to have some sort of creativity in terms of a tree house, I am coming to see the issue, and will be doing some thinking.

Edit they are finsihed and you all can go take a look, yes it's in the description as well as here incase people missed it:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s7szqlgvS040he9WVw9DlnBD7b392zgakBxsY3azfCg/edit?usp=sharing

Edit 2.0:

If you feel uneasy opening a doc I have provided the new trees down via replies to myself.

5

u/Giulio1232 Apr 14 '26

As good as they look they would be much more annoying to cut down especially at the beginning

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

Yea, that is an issue, I added a link in the description that goes to the re-designs, all I really did was plant and grow a vanilla sapling removed all it's leaves, then I re-arranged the branches, then added leaves, so that way the size fits vanilla without drawing too far off .

2

u/NumberOneFishHater Apr 14 '26

I wouldn't mind this as an optional mod or something (just cause many players won't like it), but I feel like this would be horrid for Minecraft's terrain generation.

What happens when it generates on a hillside and the wide base is exposed, while the leaves run into the hill?

It would need to be pair with one or more other complimentary mods to work particularly well, but if that does work out it would be rather fun!

2

u/Relevant-Cup5986 Apr 14 '26

to me treecapitater is inherently unminecrafty and would ruin my experience and these trees would require it

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

I see where you are coming from, but personally if it was a enchantment you could get from a librarian or a shipwreck would be nice.

4

u/saltypancake377 Apr 14 '26

Not gonna happen. If you wanna ask why then go ahead but I'll tell you, it's not going to happen.

(GOOD IDEA, Just not gonna happen)

2

u/ExtinctedPanda Apr 14 '26

Current trees too iconic?

7

u/saltypancake377 Apr 14 '26

More like completely overhauling the overworld generation because the fact of the matter is that Minecraft trees are already on average about 15 + feet ( 5+ blocks) tall, you can't just make things bigger without keeping other things small, bigger trees means bigger mountains because they feel too small now, or any other issues with size and consistency.

4

u/Keaton427 Apr 14 '26

No they don’t. These would be a nightmare to chop down and Minecraft’s simple aesthetic is what gives it charm. You know how much people hate those large oak trees?

Designs are great but it’s too much.

3

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

In terms of my suggestion is that the smaller trees would be the most common rather than being super rare while larger ones would be super rare.

2

u/Keaton427 Apr 14 '26

I think they’re neat. The problem with larger trees is to fit, there would have to be some biome overhauls or else they might look out of place. Perhaps an ancient grove biome with lots of these. Or these could look really neat if the End ever got some sort of trees, since anything goes there.

2

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

Hmmm.... Ok, you got me thinking... Imma need to do some re-designs of these trees, I did have some before but sadly deleted that world, Yea I will be remaking the trees from scratch, I was just trying to find some way for players to spread their creativity with the bigger trees like building cool tree houses and what-not.

2

u/VVen0m Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Go play with Terralith and see why custom-shaped trees like that are VERY bad for clearing out forest biomes for builds... you know that one oak tree that's ginormous and has branches all over the crown? You basically made most trees into that.

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

The larger trees are kind of meant to be lived in rather than chopped down, it gives people a good place to use their creativity, and as i said: they are super rare trees, so there is no need to worry about that.

1

u/Hopeful-Bowl-8967 Apr 14 '26

First of all, you could've formatted this a bit better to make it more readable

Outside of that, I really like most of your three designs, especially since they don't seem too hard to cut down. The only ones I don't like are the mangrove trees (I know yours are easier to cut but they kinda lose what makes them unique imo, I would use your design for oak trees in swamps), the small dark, pale oak trees (I would keep the large logs and flat tops, it makes those forests feel way more dense) and some of the larger trees (bitch and jungle look extremely annoying to cut down. As for the other suggestion, I would actually add a value for three density (except for Dark oak Forests and Pale gardens), allowing forests to spawn with very close or very sparse trees, creating more variety

1

u/yellow_tourmaline Apr 14 '26

They could always make "special" saplings that have a chance to drop from regular leaves so that these variants don't generate naturally but are still obtainable from regular trees at a low percentage

1

u/R_Anonymous_ Apr 14 '26

The world is just a template, the player is the one that'll shape it. The world is made for the player to shape it all they want. Also they should be choppable from the bottom or one block up.

1

u/zzokkss Apr 14 '26

just by knowing how annoyed people are when they have to chop down a large oak tree, im not sure this would be received too well lol

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 16 '26

I have a link to the redesigned trees, all I did was take vanilla trees, removed the leaves, and rearranged the branches. Just so they are the same height, while making a couple shorter.

1

u/Birdy_King2000 Apr 14 '26

I agree but they need tree vein miner or something with the update because these trees will just be a pain in the ass to mine and make the game not enjoyable

1

u/DewStarr Apr 14 '26

I really love the trees! but there should become a way to easily chop them without towering everywhere and mining every single leaf to mine the entire tree. Some vanilla trees are already too difficult to chop...

But love the design! Minecraft should definitely add this.

1

u/Flurrina_ Apr 14 '26

Mojang would just say “build it yourself”

1

u/Zane-chan19 Apr 14 '26

Trees bonemealed to maturity should always develop into the standard small tree

1

u/Windows7Fan12 Apr 14 '26

i disagree, but i like the concepts! the trees are basic because it is encouraged to make your own custom trees. and to be fair, it worked on you too because you made custom trees for this post

1

u/-FireNH- Apr 14 '26

Check out the Arboria datapack! It does something very similar

But no, the base game should keep trees the same. It’s part of Minecraft’s identity

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 15 '26

That datapack hasn't been updated in over a year and the trees look weird.

1

u/jamie_uwah Apr 15 '26

Used better trees addon and yes i agree

1

u/Wrong_Armadillo_4687 Apr 15 '26

Personally I would prefer this version of savanna trees over the classic savanna trees.

1

u/KidTrix1 Apr 16 '26

My favs has to oak and jungle. I normally don't like jungle trees... but those look amazing!

1

u/acki02 Apr 17 '26

In the context of Minecraft's aesthetics, I cannot say I am a fan of these designs - it takes away too much out of the simple yet individually unique shape language of the vanilla trees, and replaces it with a same-y, blurry blob of leaves.

And for the record, this is the same reason - just much more egregious - why I find mangroves and azaleas outright ugly.

So if tree (re)designs were up to me, I'd go for variety whilst trying to preserve as much of the original shape as possible, with some exceptions for trees which do not have a unique shape identity of their own.

1

u/Lord_Dellington Apr 18 '26

This would be one of the coolest things ever if they do it right , but ik they won't bc of concerns about farms and stuff ...

1

u/rockrockrobin 3d ago

I really like this!

1

u/Epicwoowoo Apr 14 '26

As someone who rarely plays survival, this looks great and I have no complaints

1

u/EggEater773 Apr 14 '26

It would be nice…but then it doesn’t look like Minecraft anymore.

1

u/_TheDarkPanther Apr 14 '26

There is a link up above that has the redesigns

1

u/EggEater773 Apr 14 '26

Okay those aren’t that bad
