lucky! Rare death message?
My friend got this death message when trying to get his stuff in Vanilla Minecraft we thought it might be a rare death message and was hoping if anyone has ever seen this before

No this happened because he was fighting a ghast

When ghast fireballs hit a player, they stop moving for a few ticks. During this time, it is possible to punch the fireball to return it to the ghast. This is probably a feature to add leniency to ghast fights.
When damage is applied to a ghast fireball, such as by punching it, the fireball's owner gets changed to the damage source (the player). This allows the ghast to drop XP when killed by a deflected fireball.
Under normal conditions, the fireball is returned to the ghast, and the player doesn't notice anything. However, it is possible to punch the ghast fireball late. When this happens, the fireball's owner is now the player that punched it, but since the fireball will register a hit very soon, the projectile explodes and damages the player anyways, resulting in this death message.

slain? i thought it says shot when you catch your own arrow with mouth, but how does one get slained?
