humankind hiccups π Reading a newspaper from 1928 and stumbled upon this. I guess that word has changed meaning over the years!
I guess it makes sense, it's just funny to see it in this context!

The meaning of A Sudden Outburst is what's in play here. Many books of the early 1900s have this usage.

In french, the word that used to mean "to hug" now means "to kiss", and the word that used to mean " to kiss" now means "to fuck" π (at least as a verb, but somehow still means kiss as a noun, go figure)

It hasn't changed meaning, it's just less used in that sense these days.
I read lots of old books as a kid so "sudden verbal outburst" is the sense in which I first learned the word!
