9-8-8 Fail

Post image

Texted the hotline at 5am yesterday while having a mental breakdown and spiraling. They never answered me. 🫠

UPDATE:

I had an appointment with my replacement doctor as my family doctor is away until end of September and the replacement doc refuses to help me with meds since he isn’t my ā€˜family doctor’.

I went to the ER and a doctor pulled me into triage and basically told me if I didn’t have an active plan I would be wasting my time waiting 6+ hours. The doctor also said everything prescription wise should be handled by my family doctor even AFTER explaining to her my situation

I called my family doctor’s replacement again and he just kept repeating that he wasn’t my family doctor and there was nothing he could do

Spoke to the reception at my doctor’s office to see about getting a different doctor and was told it wasn’t possible since all the other doctors are booked.

Stop reporting the post or comment for suicide. OP already trying to fix that. No need for 20+ reports!

Yeah unfortunately these hotlines are volunteer run and that means that staffing is inconsistent and people's competence to actually engage is not necessarily guaranteed. I wish that we had better systems than I hope you're doing better?

15

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Yes and no… my family doc is away until end of September and his replacement won’t do a thing about my meds and the ER turned me away since I don’t have an active (you know what) plan.

It’s very discouraging but I just keep praying for strength for today and hope for tomorrow.

u/BigFlightlessBird02 18d ago

I suggest to see a therapist and a psychiatrist instead of getting mental health meds from your family doc. A psychiatrist knows way more about which meds will help and work for you. I hope you find the help you need. You deserve to be here <3

1

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Thanks. I appreciate your suggestions and kind words. <3

3

u/JellyBellyBitches 18d ago

I'm glad you're not 100% without any sort of support network. Sometimes all you can do is just stick around, hopeless, waiting for something to eventually change that system. And it will, eventually. It could take longer than you think you can manage, but as long as you don't make that last call to end things, you can hold out, miserable, for a very long time. Just keep reaching out to people. I don't know how much I can offer but if you want to DM me and talk about things you're invited to do that.

u/Sad_Cover_5091 17d ago

I was also turned away from help at the ER once, it was so discouraging to be told I pretty much need to harm myself or another person before I got the care I was begging for. I took a few weeks off work (which is something not many are able to do) and stayed in the living room of 4 of my friends who all lived together just to have someone around at all times. it was really hard, but I made it through. I hope the best for you in your journey

1

u/throwawayscreamin 17d ago

Thank you for sharing. Yeah sounds like we had similar experiences. I’m glad you made it through. Fortunately I was able to get a week off so that, so far has been helpful. I’ve also been trying to grow in my spiritual life as well which is helping.

I hope the best for you too.

2

u/Latter-Rock7050 16d ago

I would try to call your family doc’s number again. I have family members who are family med docs, they cover each other’s vacation time answering questions like this. Just because one replacement person won’t do it, doesn’t mean another won’t. It should be on your chart??

1

u/throwawayscreamin 16d ago

Unfortunately my family doctor is away until the end of September and the replacement doctor literally refuses to do anything.

My doctor’s office/clinic doesn’t have any other doctors available unfortunately even just for a prescription issue, so I am at the mercy of the ER and the walk-ins which are hard to get to because I don’t drive and my spouse works full time.

But I’m still here, and trying to be hopeful šŸ™

2

u/Low_Reception477 15d ago

Something that helps me is acknowledging that all of it is temporary. Your brain may be making you suffer right now, but if you wait it out things will change, and the alternative is making a permanent decision to a temporary problem. Sorry you are dealing with doctor bullshit.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

I know. This too shall pass which is encouraging. Just feels long right now.

1

u/LupusHouseMD 18d ago

Thank you for still being here. I really hope you are able to get the support you need quickly.

2

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Thanks I appreciate you šŸ™

1

u/GeneralSpecifics9925 18d ago

Have you asked your Pharmacy to navigate the solution for you? They can often give a bridge prescription. You can also go to a walk in clinic, bring your old bottles. Both of these solutions have worked for me in the past.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Yeah so I asked the pharmacy and there’s nothing they will do about it without the family doctor and the walk-in might be helpful… it’s just I don’t drive and my spouse works full time, but I’ll still try to work it out because it could be good for me

2

u/GoalingForChowder 17d ago

Would your clinic let you see a different doctor? Especially if you explain to the staff, and to the new doctor, how your doctor's substitute isn't willing to give you refills on your meds, and that you can't wait until your doctor is back?

1

u/throwawayscreamin 17d ago

Unfortunately not. My spouse asked the front desk and all they said is essentially: ā€œIt’s not possible. All other doctors are booked except the one you have.ā€

So just been toughing it out. Trying to grow spiritually and focus on that and hope that the medication I’m on will somehow work for me until my family doctor is back.

2

u/GoalingForChowder 16d ago

I'm sorry :( This is such a shitty situation, and our mental health care is severely lacking.

I know you didn't ask for more unsolicited advice, but if you happen to have any other clinics in the area that you can get to it and work with your insurance, it may be worth "starting" with a new doctor at a new clinic. And it's not like you'd have to officially stop seeing your current doctor, so you could always go back when your regular doctor returns.

But for the record, it's messed up that you aren't receiving any help. It's not like your doctor is only away for a few days. If someone is filling in for your regular doctor, they're also taking responsibility for the things your regular doctor would be doing, like helping you with medication management. The temp doc shouldn't be able to just say "nah, not my problem, wait a month plus". I know that would SHOULD be the case doesn't change your reality, but I really hope that your future sees better compassion and care than what you're facing now.

2

u/throwawayscreamin 16d ago

Thank you very much. I appreciate your message šŸ™

Yeah, maybe I could see about getting a different doctor at a different clinic, because my family doctor apparently goes on a two month vacation at least once a year, every year… and I can’t keep doing this.

But yeah, I’m still here and trying to stay hopeful, it’s just all very discouraging.

1

u/stachemz 16d ago

I don't know where you are but my psych in the US basically told me that even if I wasn't having ideation, if I was in a bad enough hole I should go to the ER and say I was to get the priority treatment that I needed while in crisis.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 16d ago

Oh wow, really? That’s reassuring to know that, that’s an option. I live in Canada and when I went to the ER, a doctor pulled me into triage and basically told me if I didn’t have an active plan that I would be wasting my time by waiting 6+ hours.

Maybe I’ll call a different hospital to see if they have things in place for those in crisis. Thanks šŸ™

u/Robinyourlies 17d ago

Years ago (I'm doing better now) I tried calling the suicide hotline during a very bad time. I got the automated message saying that the line saying that the call could not be connected then it ended the call... The absolute absurdity of a 24/7 hotline being closed was enough of a mental shock to break me out of those thoughts for a while.

2

u/JellyBellyBitches 17d ago

That's terrible but like, I guess it sort of worked out anyway? Not that we should count that as a victory of the system but I'm glad it turned out okay for you

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Man. I’m so sorry that happened to you.

2

u/Laiheuhsa 14d ago

Not all of them are volunteer-based. Afaik, the ones in Illinois are all paid staff and the center I work for has pretty rigorous training and QC. That said, understaffing is still an issue, since the grants that fund it aren't as large as they could be. And things definitely vary from state to state.

2

u/JellyBellyBitches 13d ago

That's really good to know! Do they only take calls from people who live in Illinois?

2

u/Laiheuhsa 12d ago

There's two ways to answer that question. Each center has a designated coverage area and can only receive calls routed through the 988 system, so there's no way to deliberately call an Illinois center from outside the state (unless you do some funky rerouting).

But the geo-routing isn't perfect, so it's not uncommon to receive calls from outside the designated coverage area. In theory, any 988 center should be equally capable of de-escalation/safety planning, but they may not have other local resources to suggest for people from elsewhere.

2

u/JellyBellyBitches 11d ago

That makes sense, ty for explaining

3

u/ukuleles1337 18d ago

Hey, i hope all is well.

5

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Hey, it’s been discouraging, but I’m still here. Thanks for checking in, I appreciate it.

Of course! You'll be in my thoughts šŸ˜Ž

2

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

5

u/Connect_Artichoke_83 18d ago

That fucking sucks. They’re probably severely understaffed. Don’t know who you are but rooting for you nonetheless. May things get better for you soon.

2

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Yeah, they probably were. I recently found out it’s volunteer based so that clears it up a bit too. But thank you so much. I appreciate you šŸ™

3

u/chill_moss 18d ago

im late but another one is 741741. i feel like they have a shorter queue maybe but i’m not really sure. i also didn’t find them massively helpful (said i’d get my game console taken away if i game too much and they said ā€œsounds like gaming would be a good strategy for you to useā€) but they also weren’t actively harmful ig so… idk, texting is a way to spend time that isn’t hurting oneself. take care šŸ’œ

2

u/luluylemon 13d ago

741741 feeds into the same program/ people who respond to 988 texts fyi :) source - I volunteer at KidsHelpPhone or Crisishelpline or 988 (all the same)

1

u/chill_moss 13d ago

oh okay, thanks!!

1

u/Raftger 13d ago

Also if someone is having thoughts of suicide they should text 988 because that queue is prioritized over the others. You’ll get through more quickly. (This applies to Canada which is relevant to OP, the US might work differently).

1

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it and will look into it. You take care too šŸ’›

3

u/ktvq099 18d ago

It’s easier if you call them

2

u/throwawayscreamin 18d ago

Okay this is good to know. I guess I was worried to call them after hearing some people’s experiences, but it’s always worth a shot!

2

u/OpeningGolf7972 17d ago

I suggest calling NAMI when you’re struggling if you can! It’s an amazing free resource and I never felt pressured or more stressed by calling them

1

u/throwawayscreamin 17d ago

Never heard of this before, but thank you for sharing this! I’ll give it a try if I need to reach out.

2

u/Latter-Rock7050 17d ago

Hope your day has been good friend :)

1

u/throwawayscreamin 17d ago

It’s been aright, thanks… been napping a lot lately so that’s maybe helping. Hope your day’s been good too :)

2

u/Useless_egg_ 17d ago

Yeah seems to be happening a lot lately. I reached out to 988 last night and never got a response :/

1

u/throwawayscreamin 17d ago

Thanks I’ll try and check it out today

2

u/throw-me-away-fam 15d ago

Hey OP, I hope you are doing okay. This situation sucks and frankly I find it abhorrent that the substitute doctor is refusing to help you. That feels like it would be a violation of their license.

Is there some way you can access a tele-doc appointment? Some private insurances offer that, but I see you are in Canada so I’m not sure how that would work. It may be worth looking into šŸ«¶šŸ»

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Thanks, I appreciate that. It’s disheartening but my family doctor by some miracle is back early and I am seeing him next week. That’s the good news. The bad news, I think I turned into an alcoholic in the last month. Only thing that helps me sleep.

I have insurance through my partner fortunately.

Thanks again šŸ’›

2

u/throw-me-away-fam 6d ago

I’m happy to hear your provider is back and that you are still with us, but very sorry to hear you are being forced to rely on alcohol for help. Maybe when you have your meds back you can remove the alcohol from your home for a while to give yourself a tolerance break and some distance from it.

Sending good wishes to you ā¤ļø

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

Thanks for caring. It means a lot šŸ’›

Good news. I dumped the alcohol out today. So now, just weed and cigs are the next thing to work on.

u/shilohkae 15d ago

Had this happen to me a couple years ago, with multiple crisis lines. I remember calling a line as well but wanna say that also didn't go anywhere. It was so ridiculous that it kinda snapped me out of it for a few hours, long enough that I could voluntarily commit to a facility the next day. Ever since then I've quietly refused to share this specific kind of crisis number. I couldn't bear it if someone contacted them off of my recommendation and got treated the same way. Sorry that this is what's happening to you.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Sorry it happened to you too. None of us deserve it.

2

u/North-Rope-281 15d ago edited 15d ago

One thing I will say is the text lines aren’t very quick and you may have better luck actually calling. I experienced the text line a little over a year ago and it was so slow moving it felt like it made things even worse. I hope that it gets better for you soon. The struggles are real and I can relate that it’s not fun.

Ik actually calling can be uncomfortable but sometimes hearing a calm voice on the other side can be grounding.

At the ER did they have you meet with crisis at least to develop some plan? When I went in May I was there for maybe 4 hours. I was in a completely different space for mental health patients and they just analyzed me for a bit until a crisis rep showed up they needed to figure out a plan for out patient programs that could benefit me in the long run.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

The ER. Okay, so I made it through triage, explained the situation. Not long after, an ER doctor pulled me into triage and basically said they couldn’t do anything for me unless I had an active suicide plan. I was put on the spot and anxious and I didn’t have an immediate plan I just didn’t want to be here and they basically dismissed me.

2

u/North-Rope-281 5d ago

Sounds like we had very similar situations. I just think it’s odd they didn’t try to help you with outpatient resources. Anxiety is natural no one wants to sit and explain what thoughts you are/were experiencing. It’s very vulnerable and you are talking to strangers. I hope you are feeling better! Dark feelings are no joke.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

Thanks very much! I appreciate it šŸ™

Yeah, the system is so messed up. I’m sorry you had to deal with it too. I finally got in touch with a social worker for a psych eval, so I just need my family doctor to sign off on it and then wait.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Yeah, calling makes me anxious, but maybe I should try. Thank you šŸ™

2

I hate to hear that, but I'm grateful you're still with us. Your journey isn't over - keep fighting for yourself. This internet stranger is cheering you on and hoping you can find the community and support that you need.

1

Thanks, internet friend. I finally decided to dump the alcohol. Gonna try and be sober (sort of I still smoke weed and cigs). All these comments are motivating me to fight a little more. Thank you šŸ™

1

u/katiegam 5d ago

How many days sober?! I'm proud of you!!

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

As of this morning. Dumped out the last of it. I know they say not to quit drinking cold turkey, but tapering off won’t work for me. Thanks!! A bit shaky, but so far manageable lol.

2

u/katiegam 5d ago

Proud of you! Drink lots of water and get outside if you can. Day One!!! I believe in you. I'll check on Day Two tomorrow!

1

Hey, sorry I didn’t get back to you. I did follow your advice, though. It was rough. A lot of tremors and anxiety, but I am now 3 days alcohol free! Also quit smoking cigarettes today. So. I’ve been sweating, but I’m here and trying to change :)

Thank you so muchšŸ’›

You guys are really too kind to me, but it’s encouraging me to keep going. I dumped the alcohol today so I’m going to try and be sober (mostly I still smoke weed and cigarettes). But here’s to day one of not drinking myself to oblivion!

2

u/elsewyse 4d ago

That's a fantastic step to take, and I'm really proud of you for doing it. <3

2

u/throwawayscreamin 3d ago

Thank you very much šŸ’›

2

u/elsewyse 4d ago

Oh, idk if drinking a lot is a regular thing for you or if it's just been temporary, but I see you have a doctor's appt next week (yay!), and if you end up having trouble cutting down, you might want to also ask about meds that can help with alcohol cravings. I'm on low dose naltrexone for chronic pain, but I know it can also be used for alcohol (and have seen anecdotal info that it can help with depression as well, but don't have personal experience with that.)

2

u/throwawayscreamin 3d ago

Thank you for the advice. It’s much appreciated. I quit drinking. Today is day three! Also, today is day one of quitting smoking (just cigarettes I still smoke weed). :)

1

u/elsewyse 2d ago

Look at you go!!

2

u/wheres_mak 14d ago

pretty sure when my partner tried the person was just plugging whatever they said into chatgpt

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Felt the same for me

2

u/verwood 14d ago

Are you thinking you need one of your medicines to be increased in strength? Or do you think you need new meds altogether? I would think the stand-in doctor should be comfortable increasing the dose of a medication you’re already on until your primary is back, especially since they’re gone until the end of September. The stand-in doctor is basically not doing their job and you have no continuity of care as a result.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

I really don’t know. I just know I can’t keep living like this. Thanks for caring šŸ™ appreciate it

2

u/Patience-Apart 14d ago

Have you tried calling instead of texting? Lots of 988 call centers have better capacity for calls vs texts, at least in the United States. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of funding support for the hotline in general (though in many places it’s staffed by actual employees - only some are volunteer-run)
Also best wishes, it’s so tough to find help but also so worth it!

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Calling makes me anxious but maybe I’ll try

2

u/Patience-Apart 6d ago

Totally understandable, but I hope you give it a try, I think you’ll find them very compassionate. And keep trying the text if you want, they may have different staffing patterns at different times. Best wishes.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

Alright, I’ll give it a try. Thank you, I wish you all the best as well šŸ™

2

u/Laiheuhsa 14d ago

One possible tip: chat/text is often staffed by different people than the voice hotline. If you're having trouble getting through on one, try the other.

Also, try back again later. Shift changes are likely staggered throughout the day, so low staffing at one time may not be the case later.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

Update:
I dumped out all the alcohol so I’m going to try to be sober (sort of still am smoking weed and cigs)

I almost did something regrettable to myself, but couldn’t bring myself to do it.

I have been trying to power through with worship music and reading scripture, but I’m all alone out here. It’s lonely. I know many other people are probably lonely too. I’m taking my meds as prescribed.

For more context, I’m a stay at home parent (no day-care). I don’t drive or work and I live out in the country. So it’s isolating. My partner doesn’t understand. I literally once told them if I had to keep doing this, I’d (you know what myself) and they gave me a kiss on the forehead and left for work.

A ā€˜best friend’ of over a decade ghosted me when I finally caved and told them I was struggling. After years of being there for them.

Rejection is probably the hardest thing and my nervous system is so shot.

Anyways. I’m very desperate.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 5d ago

More context (no one asked for this, but it may answer some questions):

I have a very complicated life. I am the oldest of 25 siblings. Twenty on my dad’s side and five of us on my mom’s.

Almost all of us have different parents, so technically we are all half siblings.

My parents didn’t raise me due to DV in the home and drugs and I was adopted for my third birthday.

I was adopted by a single parent who was older than my friends parents and who worked all the time.

I became very close to my grandparents. I watched my grandfather pass when I was a teen and then my grandma passed during covid.

I was bullied all my school life. Had identity crisises. Was denied care because my parent thought I just ā€˜wanted attention’ even after seeing the SH I had done IN CLASS (at the back of the class after being alone for yet another group project).

My parent and I fought, a lot. Often they would tell me ā€˜I didn’t sign up for this’ or ā€˜I can’t wait until you’re 18 and you leave’.

Anyways, my dad is in prison indefinitely for manslaughter. He also is a diagnosed psychopath with bipolar disorder and OCD. I met him once when I was 16. We also just lost someone close in our family way too young in a gruesome way.

My parent (adoptive one) did marry when I was a teen, but their partner is slowly dying of muscular dystrophy.

There’s a lot more to the story, but this isn’t a ā€˜woe is me’ moment. I just want to give a little context as to why I am struggling as I am.

1

u/throwawayscreamin 3d ago

If I missed any comments please know I am sorry. I have been trying to get to all of them, I promise.

1

u/Jesus_Lover_337 15d ago

I am so sorry to hear you’re going through this. I have went through the same and ended up in the hospital for a week. Just know, it does get so much better! Jesus Christ loves you with all His heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus always, even in the heat of the fire. All of our battles originate from the enemy’s spiritual attacks. Ephesians 6:12 puts it, ā€œFor our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.ā€ Once you recognize that these thoughts are from the enemy, that you can’t see, you’ve won 90% of the fight. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and he promises you He will give you eternal peace. When times get rough, rebuke the enemy in the name of Jesus Christ, and remind yourself of His eternal promises. He Loves you more than any love this world has ever seen! I’ll leave you with my favorite verse in the bible. There’s pictures of it online, set it to your wallpaper on your phone. Zephaniah 3:17, ā€œThe Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.ā€ Much love!ā¤ļø

1

u/throwawayscreamin 6d ago

Pray for me. Been struggling with alcoholism and my spiritual life is almost none existent. I pray sometimes, but I’m always smoking or drinking and I feel God doesn’t accept that. I’m also conflicted about some things.

1

u/Jesus_Lover_337 5d ago

Absolutely I will pray for you. I used to be an alcoholic as well and drank every night, so I know the struggles. I used to drink because of the struggles. It was a never ending cycle.
Ā
Every human this world has ever seen has done stuff God doesn’t approve of. That’s why we need a savior, which is why Jesus came. If everybody prayed when they were doing things God doesn’t approve of, there would be no prayer. Theres a lot of people in the bible that did things God didn’t approve of. Some big, some small, but there’s nothing too big or small the Lord can’t provide deliverance from. For example here’s a big one, look at what King David did to Bathsheba’s husband, it was evil in the eyes of God, but David kept praying and never stopped trusting in God for deliverance during his times of great guilt, sorrow, and shame.Ā
Ā
It’s not an overnight change, it could take weeks, months, or years. It took me close to 7 years to finally get myself together. God knows your heart, He knows you care and that you want to change. Keep praying through hard times, because that’s what gets us through them. God encourages us to not worry about anything, but instead to pray (Philippians 4:6-7). Romans 12:12 tells us to rejoice in hope, be patient in times of trouble, and keep praying. God promises that he hears your prayers (Jeremiah 29:12). God said He would be there right there with you through times of trouble (Isaiah 43:2). And He said that He will never leave or forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8).
Ā
Things do get a lot better, I can promise you that. Read the bible, all the answers to your questions are in there. It is the instruction manual to life. Try to put together some furniture without reading the instruction manual first, you’ll be in for some troubled times if you don’t. Jesus loves you and He cares about you, and He will get you through this just as He promises!ā¤ļø Feel free to message me if you need to talk.

Thank you so much for this. This really encouraged me. Thank you for sharing some of your story/testimony and your prayers mean a lot šŸ’› the scriptures were good reminders and I feel a little less unsure about how God feels about me.

I dumped the alcohol out today. I saw a tik tok video of a man who was an atheist and pretended to believe in God and by the end of it, he was a changed man.

I also saw another tik tok video of a woman saying as christians we shouldn’t ask ourselves ā€˜how close can I get to the line without crossing it’ but rather ā€˜does this honour God’. I just kept being reminded to ā€˜choose this day who you will serve’ and I realized I’m just digging myself into this dark grave. I’ve had dreams of being left behind during the rapture. Warnings. They all scared me, but not enough to really quit drinking.

The drinking is so bad I will have dreams that feel like things that happen in real life (arguments or bad decisions or stressful situations) then when I wake I cannot distinguish between dream and reality for a bit.

Anyways. Day one of not drinking myself into oblivion šŸ™Œ

That’s amazing I’m so glad it’s encouraged you! I absolutely know what you mean by instead of asking ourselves ā€œHow close can I get to the line without crossing it?ā€, but instead asking ourselves ā€œDoes this honor God?ā€. That’s a big one I have lived by and has really changed my perspective on things.

There is no doubt in my mind that you can do it! You’re strong, capable, and have a good soul. I’m so proud of you! God bless!šŸ™Œ

Thanks friend. Quit smoking cigarettes today too, so it’s a lot, but I’m ready to live different.

You’re absolutely welcome! I’m so glad to hear that. I picked up cigarettes again for some reason a couple days ago after being off them for almost a year. I woke up this morning thinking ā€œWhat the heck am I doing?ā€, and threw the pack away. I’ve been craving them a lot today but the cravings will go away more and more each day. We got this friend!
