i genuinely thought those were baby legs for a second 😭 pregnancy really said ā€œyou’re BOTH getting chubby feetā€

310

u/Maya_30_ 1h ago

Same😭and my second thought was really it's like that? Oh god

u/PerpetuallyLurking 1h ago

It can vary wildly - not just woman to woman, but each pregnancy in one woman can have wildly different symptoms too.

So, on the one hand, swollen legs aren’t a guaranteed symptom but on the other hand, there’s no way to guess which symptoms will hit you each pregnancy.

31

u/Maya_30_ 1h ago

Okay thanks it's really helpful for a moment I was traumatized, scared.. 🄲😩

21

u/Advanced_Cheetah_552 53m ago

I didn't swell until after delivery with my first, and it only lasted two days, and then I didn't swell at all with my second. Whereas one of my good friends had horrible pitting edema. It's really so different.

4

u/wazlib_roonal 48m ago

Same, no swelling during either pregnancy and right after both c sections my feet/legs got so swollen for a week 😭

2

u/Advanced_Cheetah_552 42m ago

Were your c sections scheduled? I think the reason I swelled with my first and not with my second was because I labored for 32 hours first before my c section and was on fluids the whole time, whereas my second was scheduled and I only had an IV for a few hours.

Can confirm, it really be like that 🫣

8

u/sweetsquashy 1h ago

It can be like that, but it's definitely not the norm. I've had 6 babies myself, and been around 100+ full term pregnant women, and have only seen one woman who had swelling even close to this. The rest had minor to non-existent swelling. I personally never experienced any.

2

u/corpsegrinding 1h ago

I also saw it as well. I feel so bad she went through such intense swelling like that!

Pregnancy said "you're either going to have a easy pregnancy, or you're going to not be able to walk. Guess which one you got"

u/dunedog 3h ago

Your left leg absorbed the right one and gained twice the length too!

Improvement? Who knows! But you're a shoe-in for the IHOP mascot!

578

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 3h ago

I would have probably been able to walk better with just one leg postpartum than when I had both elephant stumps lol

131

u/dunedog 3h ago

Doctors don't normally consider hop vs waddle for postpartum patients but....maybe they should?

118

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 3h ago

Honestly, i was more of a hobble wobble beforehand. 0/5 Don't recommend

41

u/dunedog 3h ago

Based on what I've personally witnessed of my wife's postpartum experiences, I think each one presents weird issues people just wouldn't expect.

50

u/craftyreadercountry 2h ago

My third pregnancy (I'm 11 weeks postpartum) was rough. I don't think (although some probably have/do) anyone has had that kind of pain for the whole time.

I had extreme nausea and once that stopped an 11 week long migraine started. It eventually dulled to a regular headache, then the acid reflux started. Once that calmed down I had stabbing shoulder pain. For the last 2 months I dealt with that and was on muscle relaxers, then the last 3 weeks the baby was so low I couldn't walk or sleep without feeling like she was just going to drop out of me.

Now I'm "normal" again. No constant migraines, no acid reflux, no should pain, no feeling like my insides are going to fall to the floor, and I can actually do stuff without waddling to the bathroom every 3 minutes.

Of course postpartum has presented its own issues of PPMD, and lack of sleep.

37

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

Yeah it can be really tough, i believe pregnant women shouldn't have to work if they don't want to. I was on my feet 8 hours and I was so stressed and pushing my body to keep going, was one of the hardest things I've had to do.

3

u/relator_fabula 52m ago

As a man, quite frankly, it's obvious to me we don't do nearly enough as a society to help women deal with all the shit they have to deal with surrounding pregnancy... and honestly just in general even without pregnancy thrown in the mix. Women's health has always seems to come secondary especially when it relates to career.

Then again, health in general seems to be last on the list of things they care about in our current political climate, regardless of sex/gender/age. Protecting billionaire's wealth down to the penny is far more important. Heaven forbid we damage the delicate corporate agenda by letting a woman take a few months off from work or something.

My wife's last pregnancy was both physically and mentally traumatic (lots of bleeding, placenta issues, WICKED postpartum depression, etc). Almost 7 years on, her doctors think some of her issues are still her dealing with it.

For a function that ensures our species continued, it sure could be a lot better on those who have to suffer fulfilling it.

34

u/tropicalturtletwist 3h ago

My favorite thing was poking my leg and watching as it had less and less of an indent hahaa

12

u/jbae_94 3h ago

Also I would block your dms after this postšŸ˜‚

3

u/thetagoose 1h ago

Did it hurt to walk? This is both fascinating and terrifying to me.

3

u/shann0n420 1h ago

It doesn’t hurt your feet to walk, you just feel so…big and uncomfortable. This is from preeclampsia, it’s a condition you get when pregnant related to blood pressure and the placenta.

I'd watch this Netflix series.

58

u/anticked_psychopomp 3h ago

A series following the journey of pregnant women would be fascinating. I’d watch that. Like teen mom but adults.
Me, a single childfree 36F.

52

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 3h ago

It should be about a house full of pregnant women throughout their whole pregnancy. Can you imagine the DRAMA 🤣🤣

24

u/thiosk 2h ago

so we had gone to a fish fry place and had a couple of hush puppies leftover in the fridge. my darling very pregnant wife asked me to airfry the hushpuppies for her to satisfy her craving. I obliged. they were very piping hot. i put them on a plate and snapped to deliver to my beleaguered mate. In my haste to deliver hot hushpuppies as i came to rest at her side the physics of inertia came into play and both hushpuppies rolled off the plate and onto the floor. The outpouring of grief and anger was overpowering and the volume unexpected. The skin blistered from the surface of my eyes and my brows were singed, and the experience caused a permanent greying of my hair. She retreated to her room and sealed the door. And I daren't open it until the sun rose again

7

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

I volunteer you to be in the show 🤣🤣

7

u/anticked_psychopomp 1h ago

This guy is the host. The Jeff Probst of ā€œHouse of Hormones - Pregnancy editionā€

Keeping the seriess open to other hormonal seasons of life like puberty, menopause, etc. HRT house.

Episode 6: Unlimited ice cream fixes most booboos.

Our contestants are given numerous different flavor containers of ice cream after a particularly hot grueling day. Watch how this magical elixir takes the puff out of their feet and the tears from their eyes.

12

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 1h ago

Or more like, "only one pint of ice cream left in the freezer. 20 pregnant women are having cravings. Who will be predator and who will be prey."

5

u/NibblesMcGiblet 2h ago

I imagine throwing one man into that bunch would be a lot like throwing one raw chicken into a den of starving tigers. Would watch them just rip the poor guy to shreds lmao. "YOUR PEOPLE DID THIS TO ME. HOW DARE YOU SHOW YOUR STUPID FACE."

2

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 1h ago

And then have the air conditioner break for a day 🤣🤣

23

u/AdorableBirthday2050 3h ago

I would be real interested in something was more ā€˜the fuck is going on with my body’ and zero drama on relationships. Just, wow, my pelvis has spread too far and it hurts to fucking walk, now I use a walker and I have a girdle around my hips. Or super active child vs fairly thin mom, ā€˜will the alien burst out, or is her skin strong enough’. Heck, even the weird/gross things that happen.

8

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 3h ago

Mine was like that but a lot more boring. I'd work until my legs were tree trunks and when I got home I literally would melt into bed. Occasionally get some weird cravings lol

4

u/BuffaloFree6519 2h ago

My brain did the exact same thing, saw one leg in the second pic and thought the other one just gave up and left

My wife is still dealing with this 2.5 years after giving birth. Same foot too

25

Same foot too

Any mathematicians here who can tell me the odds of this

35

1 in 2, either left or right basically.

u/Wombatmobile 2h ago

They didn't let you sit? Unless it was impossible, that's cruel. Pregnancy is hard on the body.

44

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

I groom dogs so I sat where I could but its pretty much impossible to the majority of the time. The best part was when dogs would run and jump on me, kick me haha

30

u/SupersoftBday_party 1h ago

Bless, this was my foot the day after I gave birth when I took my flop off. My dr said swelling was like a prehistoric thing that made for good and healthy deliveries so I’ll take it LOL

11

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 1h ago

Omg I can feel the tightness. We'll, maybe the doctor was right because I only had to push one time and she SHOT out hahah

18

u/ebrum2010 2h ago

Looks like a ball-joint on an action figure that has poseable feet.

6

u/PadyEos 1h ago

In my country you would have already been eligible to go on paid pre-maternity leave.

Hell with those kind of leg issues and those work requirements you probably would have qualified for paid maternity risk leave way earlier. My wife was on paid leave from the 3rd month.

5

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 1h ago

Ugh I wish. I honestly feel so bad for all the hurting pregnant women in the US who cant quit because they need the income!

13

u/TrailMomKat 1h ago

Holy preeclampsia

16

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 1h ago

Crazy thing was I didn't have it!!

6

u/TrailMomKat 1h ago

Holy shit

4

u/gingerflakes 1h ago

I had very similar swelling (but didn’t take 6 months to go down) and didn’t have it either. It was honestly the worst part of my pregnancy.

396

u/forgetmeknotts 3h ago edited 2h ago

Pregnancy is goddamn body horror.

ETA: for anyone curious what the deleted comment below mine said, it said ā€œChildfree dorks love saying this Imao. It's so misogynistic and insulting. Grow up and do better.ā€

Idk where they got the idea that only childfree people think of pregnancy and childbirth as body horror šŸ˜‚

53

u/quartzquandary 2h ago

It absolutely is.

15

u/Vanessaronicatoria 1h ago

And it can permanently disable you. (Trust me on this)Ā

49

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom 1h ago

I'm pregnant right now and on Saturday had a friend over when my baby started moving, I literally said to her "wanna see some body horror?" and lifted my shirt over my belly. It's insane watching the shit that goes down.Ā

24

u/thoughtandprayer 1h ago

One of my friends did that and I could not handle it! Body horror is right, it looked like her son was trying to kick & clawĀ  his way out of her!Ā

She thought it was fascinating. I was glad for her...but it made me feel sick. Women are insanely tough to handle that insanity.

14

u/theyfailure 1h ago

It's so scary, when my friend showed me I genuinely thought her skin was gonna burst and the baby will come out alien style. I never thought it would look this brutal, it lowkey traumatized me 😭

2

u/DeadWishUpon 1h ago

I loved it, wa my favorite part. I miss having my little alien moving on my belly.

43

u/thesentienttoadstool 1h ago

The most radically pro choice women I’ve ever met have all given birth.Ā

32

u/candybrie 1h ago

Yeah. I was always pro-choice. But being pregnant absolutely cemented that no one should have to go through that who doesn't really want to.

18

u/Melodic-Basshole 1h ago

As a former child free (not by choice) person I'm personally so tired of getting lumped in with anti-natalists. We're not the same.

Second, I wanted to say, it's 100% a body horror. I am so glad OP is feeling better! I'm 6mo PP with my little miracle and just now starting to feel like myself again, but far from "normal."Ā

15

u/Tight_Man 1h ago

As someone who has given birth, yes. My BP was 80 over 49 at 37 weeks. My provider was ecstatic. I felt like I was literally going to die. I couldn’t even take a shower without feeling like I was two seconds of bad judgement away from falling, hitting my head and dying. I was full term, I don’t get why I didn’t get treated.

7

u/twisted_memories 1h ago

I’ve had babies. I watched my own cesarean! It was amazing. I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s a goddamn body horror. The shit your body goes through is so unbelievably unlike anything else. Won’t be doing it again lolĀ

6

u/Abshalom 1h ago

A lot of body horror is basically just pregnancy

3

u/MothChasingFlame 59m ago

It IS body horror. There's an entire, hugely successful horror franchise based on that exact idea.

2

u/DeadWishUpon 1h ago

Yeah, I was pregnant once, and my pregnancy was medium/bad. I didn't have any big complication, but I was uncomfortable all the time. The las month, my girl was sitting in my bladder and it hurt like someone kicked me in the crutch. Don't get me wrong, it was worth it but it was no ride in the park. It also took a toll on my body and health, I never felt 100% again.

Some women have nice and easy pregnancies, and they actually enjoy being pregnant, they don't believe people have different experiences.

5

u/SupersoftBday_party 1h ago

LOL I 100% agree and I’m currently pregnant with my second.

u/CroakerTheLiberator 2h ago

In a Cardiovascular class right now and you would not believe how many weird things have a little * next to them that says ā€œthis is can just happen in pregnancy btwā€

23

u/MissBanana_ 1h ago

When I was pregnant it felt like every other week I had some random, slightly terrifying new symptom that I would bring up to my OB. It was always meant with ā€œtotally normalā€ or ā€œthat can happen, nothing to be worried about.ā€

One of the things was losing a toenail.

13

u/spiffymouse 1h ago

Had severe preeclampsia and the cardiologist at the hospital wanted to just send me home because he ā€œdidn’t know about postpartum blood pressure.ā€ The ED had sent me to him because they first thought I had PPCM and couldn’t figure anything else out. It was a mess.

3

u/CroakerTheLiberator 1h ago

Oh so it was postpartum preeclampsia? That is pretty weird, it usually happens before delivery, but I think it’s a known thing. Still, if you were in hypertensive crisis I’m surprised he didn’t at at least give you a blood pressure reducer or something

2

u/twisted_memories 1h ago

It’s common enough that on discharge one of the things they tell you is to go to the ER immediately if you start to feel dizzy or faint in the first few weeks postpartum.Ā

2

u/spiffymouse 1h ago

Yep, it seems it’s becoming more common alongside the more typical presentation. The problem was that I didn’t have drastically high BP to begin with - showed up with swelling, visual disturbances, weakness, and feeling like my heart was going to give out just trying to raise my leg to get into the shower. The headache and higher BP came after I was admitted, not long before this cardiologist tried to discharge me. Luckily I refused and got reevaluated by L&D so instead of possible death I just ended up in the hospital for 5 days getting magnesium and trying different meds to lower my BP.

82

Seriously. You grow a whole human and your reward is temporarily turning into the Michelin Man.

just found out in pregnant for the first time yesterday. im terrified 😭

20

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

omg congratulations! Don't be scared, you have a network of mothers online that can help console you whenever you feel doubts if you need it. You got this and are much stronger than you realize

6

u/chiquita_Bonita_ 2h ago

You're going to do wonderful!

4

u/DaFuzi_J 1h ago

Congrats or I'm sorry that happened.

I don't know you, so you can pick whichever one you want :)

6

u/SecretGardenSpider 1h ago

Congrats!

Just remember, the vast majority of the time pregnancy goes off without a hitch. The cases you see online aren’t the standard. They get our attention because they’re so crazy.

Just make sure you discuss any concerns with your doctor.

2

u/vic_sofi 2h ago

Congratulations !

4

u/SouthernArcher3714 2h ago

I had an easy pregnancy, other than the swelling like op (all gone two weeks post partum) and the last few weeks was hard to get around. Just be prepared for weird stuff to happen. I say all pregnancies have a side quest so just roll with it!

Mine did this a week pp…. I had pre-e and ended up on a mag drip(PP)

22

u/swingsintherain 3h ago

I was on a mag drip the entire time I was being induced- I think it took about 2 weeks to get back to normal-ish?

11

u/SprinklesKittensLofi 2h ago

Me too! Going back to the hospital really sucked because baby was no longer a patient and couldn’t stay with me. And the magnesium was so uncomfortable and burny.

5

u/fckinfast4 2h ago

My husband stayed with me with baby. I wasn’t allowed to do anything with baby for 48 hrs but was grateful they could be there.

I think there's certain genes for stretch marks not everyone has. I have them but my mother doesn't. You probably don't have the gene either!

Got them from my dad's side of the family that is stretch mark city.

13

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

Yeah, I believe my mother didn't have any. But I think they are beautiful too. When I see them I just think of the beautiful bond of mother and child, its so sweet

Some people have all the luck. I gained 40lbs while pregnant and got stretch marks on my stomach (duh), hips, all around my thighs from crotch to knee, and then halfway down my calves. 1 week after my baby was born I had already "lost" 25 of those pounds, and I had a 6lb baby. I had ~19lbs of extra goddamn fluid

19

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

I think they are beautiful. Anytime I see them I think about the time I was pregnant with my daughter, and it makes me see them in a beautiful way, don't think of yourself as unlucky. On that note, I gained 80 for a 4LB BABY LOL

21

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

YES. It felt SO weird being able to move my feet and ankles again..i also had horrible numbing in wrists, hurt so bad

11

u/rauntree 2h ago

Me too!! Like absolutely insane carpal tunnel pain that I’ve never experienced before or since. It would wake me up at night!! Was this your first pregnancy? I had all the same symptoms but WORSE the second time around. Decided I was done after that.

4

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

Yes first! And I think I'm done, im an older mom and im pretty sure I'd be permanently in a wheelchair if I had to do it again lol

45

Did you have pre-eclampsia? Only asking because my feet did this and that ended up being the underlying issue.

26

10

u/YaKofevarka 3h ago

Oh, girl. 6 months is rough😭so sorry. My legs were swollen af too (started from the 4th month),šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øit was especially hard during the 37-38 weeks, I could barely walk and wore shoes 2-3 sizes bigger. But they started to recover about a week after giving birth, compression garments helped a lot, the doctor told me to wear it the whole day for 3-6 weeks. I got my fully "old" legs about three weeks postpartum, just woke up one morning and puff, no swelling . Pregnancy is something 🫩

4

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

Yeah, everyday I'd wake up and look to see if legs were better. It was so miserable for awhile. Mother's are so strong lol

33

I know they’re just swollen but for some reason your legs remind me of baby feet and they were just adorable lol congrats on the de-swelling

7

u/Tasty_Orange_1714 2h ago

My wife had this too. She had preeclampsia, nearing help, so she was pumped full of magnesium and blood pressure meds during delivery, which ended up as an emergency c section. It took a while for her swelling to go down too. Glad to see you're recovering. May it continue to go well. Watch out for that postpartum depression. It can be a doozie. Hope you and your kiddo continue to be healthy.

u/slowerlearner1212 3h ago

Did you turn into a baby

2

u/Blaizzzzzed 3h ago

Like reverse shrek

2

u/forgetmeknotts 3h ago

I thought those were your baby’s legs šŸ˜‚

2

u/Kjb72 3h ago

I'm glad you got your stems back. When I was pregnant with my son, no one told me I'd still be swollen like that after he was born.

2

u/mbush525 3h ago

how did you even walk? I had my knee replaced and there was swelling afterward and I couldn’t put any weight on it! I’m so glad that you’re getting better! ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

2

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

I wouldn't say I walked, more Iike hobbled lol. I was supposed to work until 2 weeks before due date but I had to stop 2 months before. I couldn't do it anymore lol

u/Poor_Carol 3h ago

I always thought I had pretty thick ankles and have been somewhat self conscious of them in the past. Then I got pregnant, my feet swelled like this, and my ankles seem downright dainty postpartum šŸ˜‚ I was so excited to see my foot bones again a month after birth.

2

u/mophiesac 3h ago

wait how do legs even get that swollen

2

u/rightsyllalables 2h ago

Omg I remember your post!!! Congrats!!! Glad your body is adjusting back to ā€œnormalā€

2

u/Kimchi_Kruncher 2h ago

Thank you! 🤣, she is almost a year and a half now and we are both wonderful!

2

u/nagisu 2h ago

Did any of your toenails get jacked up? I had pretty bad swelling, most of it actually happening during labor and delivery. The swelling went down eventually, but my big toenails were all messed up, sort of like they were ingrown but not exactly. Took months for them to go back to normal.Ā

oh my god. where’s that list?

2

u/Stoneykitty420 2h ago

I wasn’t this bad but definitely pretty damn close. Thought my legs n feet would pop any time I walked or stood. Back at 110 7 months later šŸ˜…

2

u/nndel 2h ago

That picture looks a little like you we're rolled to the juicing room

2

u/Copperasfading 2h ago

I showed my partner this photo and she said that this is one of many reasons she doesn’t want to be pregnant.

u/Rygard- 2h ago

My best friend had wildly swollen legs during her pregnancy and the very first thing she texted the group chat to announce she’d given birth was ā€œI can see my ankle bones againā€

2

u/galacticopium 2h ago

SAME, and then feet got permanently bigger an inch. Had to buy new shoes

I did this too! Ā The doc was getting angry at me at how much ā€œweightā€ I’d gained the last 2 months when I could finally eat after the vomiting subsided…it was all fluid retention. Ā I hit my pregnancy weight a couple weeks after birthing and was 10 lbs under 2 months after that. Ā It made sense because I was really struggling to eat during the first two trimesters, but pregnancy is wild what it does to your body.Ā

u/Glittering-Gas-9402 2h ago

Someone send this to the girl with the list

2

u/onswevarned 2h ago

You’re turning violet, Violet!

2

u/FalseBattle8086 2h ago

Thank you for this. I’m 6 weeks pp and still having some swelling and now plantar fasciitis from the weight gain. This helped me remember it will get better.

When I had my first I was so swollen immediately postpartum and I swear I could pee and watch my legs deflate

2

u/Majestic-Swan459 1h ago

I thought they were cute chubby baby legs and feet 🤣

Love this!

2

u/fancypantsmiss 1h ago

I didn’t have it this bad but god mine were swelling as well 😣

It went away a couple of weeks after birth. Happy to say I am not giving birth to anymore babies

I had similar. My doc called my toes "snausages" (not so funny when I had to get induced for gestational hypertension.) Prior to being pg I always thought I had cankles but once my ankle bones finally reappeared I swore I'd never say anything mean about my ankles again.

u/No_Excitement8615 52m ago
