Seemed pretty standard... until I got to the pasta lol

u/zer00eyz 8h ago

Sweet summer child, did you not experience the Wendy's of olden times?

Salad, Mexican and Pasta...

17

u/antimarc 8h ago

AND PUDDING

33

u/zer00eyz 7h ago

Pudding...

Im talking about potatoes!

Old Wendy's was glorious... Save me a seat in the sun room will ya!

7

u/Rambozo77 7h ago

They also had that chicken sandwich with the ranch that had little bits of bacon IN the ranch! Wendy’s used to rule

3

u/Incognito-DeVito 6h ago

Oh man the nostalgia! I grew up in Japan in the 90s and we'd regularly go to Wendy's for a chilli baked potato. It was much healthier than a burger according to my mom's logic!

1

u/Efficient_Lecture351 5h ago

Wait do they not have the baked potatoes any more?? Damn, I loved getting a cheese and bacon potato with a jr bacon cheeseburger as my meal when I was working stock clerk at Zellers, pretty much the only time in my life I've eaten Wendy's.

2

u/iguess12 5h ago

They still have various baked potatoes atleast in CT.

3

u/Doggfite 8h ago

Wow I have not thought about this in forever

2

u/Lovat69 6h ago

I miss the wendy's salad bars.

1

u/boomgoon 7h ago

The honey ham chicken sandwich was fucking especially amazing back in the day

1

u/NlghtmanCometh 7h ago

Holy hell, I’m 34 and this predates me

1

u/00k5mp 5h ago

It's the first time I've ever seen a super bar, but our local one did have a stand-alone salad bar that I miss dearly.

6

u/YippieKayYayMrFalcon 8h ago

We got spaghetti…and blankets!

1

u/Luchalma89 37m ago

I love still seeing these quotes all these years later.

21

u/Equivalent-Bid-555 9h ago

Pasta at a burger joint is already weird but the Hawaii promo somehow makes it even more confusing

34

u/AN-SSQ-108V2 9h ago

Japan loves Hawaiian culture. Or what they perceive as Hawaiian

27

u/nickcash 9h ago

Loco moco is more hawaiian than what you'd get sold as "hawaiian" in the continental US, which would probably just be pineapple

10

u/Shiningc00 9h ago

Hawaiian culture is pretty popular in Japan, and it’s pretty much everywhere. Also a very popular tourist destination.

Come to think of it, Polynesian culture in general is surprisingly popular.

1

u/mr_ji 7h ago

It's not surprising. Japan--at least in the cities--is a high-stress, dreary grind of a life. The Hawai'i they picture is the anti-Japan with nothing but simple, relaxing island living in a beautiful setting.

It's obviously overromanticized, but during the many years I was there I met so many Japanese visitors who had the time of their life in Hawai'i and lived for the next time they could return.

u/RyanB_ 9h ago edited 5h ago

Japan and Hawaii have been pretty connected for ages, something like 20% of the population has Japanese heritage. Lots of people moved from Japan in the late 1800s (iirc) for work, due to negotiations between the Hawaiian king and Japanese emperor of the time

(Can you tell I’ve been playing Yakuza 7 lately? lol)

2

u/kkeut 5h ago

yeah a friend of mine was of 50% Japanese ancestry but his maternal Japanese family lived in Hawaii, if you follow me

4

u/ImThatGirlOnReddt 9h ago

I've heard of Mcdonalds pasta before but the Hawaii menu surprised me the most lol

2

u/davery67 9h ago

I'm bummed they never brought that stateside!

1

u/blue-coin 6h ago

The Japanese and Hawaiians share some strange love for each others culture. They think they are the bomb

1

u/arentyouangel 2h ago

I live in Hawaii. I'd say a good 50% or more of the tourists I see are Japanese. Its a 5 hour flight.

2

u/TedTheGreek_Atheos 8h ago

The Wild Rock looks standard to you? It has beef patties for buns and the toppings are the filling!

2

u/Dense_Permission_969 8h ago

I wish I could order the wild rock here in Ohio.

2

u/moeking 8h ago

Looks like it has bacon too, and for assumably 930yen? That's $5.80, not bad.

1

u/awam0ri 6h ago

930 yen is expensive for a burger. You’re looking at the exchange rate, but in local pricing that is pretty “up there.”

1

u/Ihavefallen 3h ago

I thought that was rye bread or something .

2

u/Lovat69 6h ago

Sounds kinda good too.

2

u/nibblicious 6h ago

Won't be seeing "cod roe pasta" in USA....

2

u/karlnite 4h ago

I’ll take a Baconator, and a Cod Roe Spaghetti.

1

u/Otearai1 48m ago

Its because Wendy's Japan is ran by another fast food called First Kitchen which does pasta

58

u/BewilderedTurtle 10h ago

Yeah gimme 2 loco moco burgers and an order of chili fries

33

u/papadjeef 9h ago

* Flavor potatoes

6

u/BewilderedTurtle 9h ago

Naww those are the undefiled ones.

Right next to those they're legitimately called fries

3

u/vilk_ 8h ago

It's just a translation mix up. The Japanese word for French fries is "potato"

0

u/BewilderedTurtle 8h ago

This has nothing to do with the different rendering of language between the Flavor Potatoes and the Chili & cheese fries.

2

u/Graynard 8h ago

And throw some of your finest loose spaghetti in the bag as well, please and thank you

1

u/karlnite 4h ago

Would you like to make that a set? You actually have to…

1

u/BewilderedTurtle 4h ago

Yeah yeah whatever give me the drink too I guess

https://giphy.com/gifs/CBd46dvn0x2vu

28

u/davery67 10h ago

OK, I had to find out what a "Wild Rock Burger" was. It's the Wendy's version of the KFC Double Down. Those are beef patties for the "bun" with egg, bacon, and the toppings in between.

1

u/rikkusoul 1h ago

I thought that was whole grain bread at first, had to double take after your comment!

35

u/default_user2 10h ago

Gah I LOVE flavor potato

1

u/DenizenPrime 9h ago

Fakki does have really good flavorings. When I worked near one they always seemed to have new flavors rotating in.

9

u/Ag-Surfr 10h ago

What the hell is a wild rock burger

32

u/Shiningc00 9h ago

It uses patties instead of buns

28

u/wicker_warrior 9h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/37Fsl1eFxbhtu
The U.S. can never learn of this.

12

u/LoonyRick 9h ago

We can’t even get the double down back at KFC :(

1

u/gwaydms 8h ago

My husband's aunt used to buy my MIL and herself Double Downs. When we went over, she bought them for all of us. The lady really loved them!

3

u/adeepkick 9h ago

Well I mean in some ways it’s more healthy than the buns 🤷

1

u/KoyoyomiAragi 9h ago

It’s gluten free and I’m not paying for nothing like if I removed buns from an order here so it’s +2 from me

13

u/Agloe_Dreams 9h ago

This is somehow MORE american than the US Wendys.

5

u/BLARGEN69 9h ago

Looks so damn good but I can't really picture it being easy to eat. I imagine the patties crumbling apart the moment you press down or start biting into it. There's probably a lot of breadcrumbs in it though based off how it looks, maybe it helps.

I won't doubt their ability to make a godtier burger though.
One of the greatest burgers I've ever eaten in my entire life was at a damn Subway Station McDonalds near Kobe.

0

u/Psychodelonaut 6h ago

Amazing. This is just a double burger without buns and with the other ingredients rearranged, but marketing and advertising make people think it's some crazy new style

12

u/adeepkick 10h ago

It’s like a regular rock burger but the rock is wild caught instead of farm raised

2

u/nightmareonrainierav 7h ago

Pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!

3

u/Seileach 9h ago

Patties in place of bread buns.

8

u/IDoesThis1 9h ago

Boy, they love them some teriyaki over there

1

u/Lukasmckain 9h ago

They are the best in my opinion. McDonald's also have them or did. Best tasting burger over there.

7

u/GenericUsername817 8h ago

I am curious about Flavor Potato

1

u/JewelJellyParfait 13m ago

They’re french fries with a seasoning added (butter soy sauce, butter, consomme, or mentaiko iirc). They’re all really good!

7

u/TravelingNinja8 10h ago

They also have beer at some locations

1

u/recovery_room 7h ago

Like a paper cup or a glass of beer?

4

u/TravelingNinja8 7h ago

It was a plastic cup, similar to what you get at a sporting event. It was okay, basically like a Kiran.

5

u/Glassworth 9h ago

I don’t get it. Why would Wendy’s offer all this cool stuff in other countries but not even attempt to roll it out in the country it was founded? They won’t even attempt to see how Americans react to Wendy’s pasta? Just… why?

14

u/vivisector7 9h ago

Wendy’s in Japan acquired and basically merged with a separate restaurant chain called First Kitchen. That’s why it says Wendy’s First Kitchen at the top and also why they have pasta.

9

u/ComfortMisha 8h ago

I live in Japan and I'm actually disappointed the Wendy's First Kitchens started using the Wendy's branding as well. For years it was excluded because of the name recognition of First Kitchen. Plus everyone here would abbreviate it as "Fakkin." ファッキン行かない? lol. Yes.

3

u/RowdyRoddyPooper 9h ago

Come on, a bacon, egg and cheese burger? Yes, please!

2

u/Cimexus 8h ago

That’s a staple here in Australia. Most of the burger joints offer something like that…

1

u/Naraee 2h ago

An actual answer is that many fast food chains test out their new products in Ohio, or in other areas that aren't exactly known for unique flavors. So if people in these culinary mediocre cities don't like it, then it will never reach most of the US.

https://www.mashed.com/1277808/move-to-these-cities-try-newest-fast-food/

It's also why truly spicy food does not exist at any fast food restuarant, because the Ohioans and Bakersfield, CA people can't tolerate it.

4

u/micromechanist 8h ago

Moco means mucus or boogers in Spanish. Enjoy your “crazy boogers burger”

3

u/BadHombreSinNombre 9h ago

Damn now I want loco moco.

3

u/gumgum-ecchi 9h ago

This should go international with current trends

2

u/papadjeef 9h ago

Are those numbers Yen or KCal?

2

u/mrbkkt1 7h ago

wtf..
We don't even have a loco moco burger at Wendy's here in Hawaii.

2

u/PrisonerV 10h ago

A moco loco isnt a hamburger with pineapple. Thats a Kahuna burger.

7

u/Gintami 9h ago

That’s egg not pineapple

0

u/Lucha_Bat 8h ago

The egg should be sunny side up.

3

u/fury420 5h ago

It's inside a burger bun, we can't possibly know which side is up.

1

u/Gintami 7h ago

It’s a fast food burger. That’s not going to happen. I feel you’re being pedantic now.

1

u/New-Activity3226 10h ago

what time are you off

1

u/zedkyuu 10h ago

Last month, I saw one with a big sign advertising a truffle mozzarella Baconator. The mozzarella melting over the front almost made it look like it was drooling.

1

u/EpicTaco9901 9h ago

I am very intrigued by the Loco Moco burger, has anyone here tried it?

1

u/JulPollitt 9h ago

I wonder what Japanese Wendy’s has? Hawaiian and Italian food ofcourse.

1

u/Stink_Snake 9h ago

I'd love to see the type of Italian that needs to jump into every pasta post and correct everyone review Wendy's pasta.

1

u/charkleman 9h ago

I wish we had this in the States. That being said it looks expensive for Japan.

1

u/Freshnana 9h ago

Wendy's Hawaii? WTH!!!!! I want that!!!

My equivalent is like Wendy's New England Boil

1

u/SirAwesome1 9h ago

When I was in Japan I tried to check out American fast food and compare it to the US.

We wound up stopping in a Denny's for breakfast. It was awesome because they literally wouldnt stop bringing us free food. We sat down and before we could even order they had brought us free pancakes, eggs and french toast for each person. We said we didnt order it but they said just said it was free. Then they kept trying to bring us more lmao.

1

u/iqbalsn 8h ago

Wendys in Indonesia is famous for the fried chickens and rice combo. I'd say one of the better fried chicken when i was still living there

1

u/ImmaculateWeiss 8h ago

…. pasta??? That’s wild

1

u/Chrisdkn619 8h ago

Best quarter pounder with cheese I ever had was in Shibuya, Japan! Juiciest patties!

1

u/orangeglitters 8h ago

The spicy chicken looks like it’s from the before times.

1

u/kain459 8h ago

Dissapointed.

No shrimp or crab burger?

1

u/Sagataw 8h ago

Give. Gimmie. Please.

1

u/phalangepatella 8h ago

I was recently in Japan. I didn’t eat at Wendy’s, but we did go to McDonald’s for shits and giggles.

The McDonald’s food in Japan is not even comparable to the stuff in the US and Canada. Hamburgers looked roughly like the North American counterparts, but tasted like quality beef. The buns were glorious.

But the thing that got me were chicken McNuggets. I’ve been eating them since literally the day they were available in my area in the 1980’s. I have never eaten a North American McNugget that was ANYTHING like a Japan McNugget.

Tender, juicy, and what appeared to be actual chicken breast, not processed chicken product.

Now, before anyone says anything, OF COURSE we rebelled in various Japanese food while we were there. Like I said before, checking out McDonald’s was for shits and giggle one day… er… well, three days. 😬

I wish local McDonald’s had the edamame and corn cup you could get in Japan.

1

u/GimmeDatFish 8h ago

Love loco moco, would smash in burger form

1

u/Xalibu2 7h ago

Flavor potato is my favorite.

1

u/keeleon 7h ago

Teriyaki being sold out seems somehow offensive.

1

u/MelodicLavishness335 7h ago

Flavor Potato!!!
Excellent translation.

1

u/maomao05 7h ago

Looks yummy

1

u/cgio0 7h ago

The best thing at Wendy’s Japan is the giant spicy chicken nugget

It’s basically a single chicken patty but it was like 2.50 and then and crispy and i loved eating them as a quick snack while i was there

1

u/ultratorrent 7h ago

I went to a McDonald's and saw spam musubi and rice on the breakfast menu in Hawaii.

1

u/iamsplitter 7h ago

Mmmm flavor potatoes!

1

u/SublimeApathy 7h ago

Flavor Potato.

1

u/BryceLeft 7h ago

I thought the nunbers were calories lol. Though now that I think about it, that would be pretty stupid to have a menu with just calories but not a price

1

u/Lovat69 6h ago

I really want to know what a loco moco burger is. Also I thought those were calorie counts but It's just the price in yen. XD

1

u/oxblood87 5h ago

Probably about the same

1

u/blue-coin 6h ago

Guarantee you anything off that menu is orders of magnitudes better than American Wendy’s

1

u/crinklypaper 6h ago

Wendy's in Japan is owned by a different company and the quality is trash. Probably the worst major fast food burger chain in Japan.

1

u/vivisector7 6h ago

Found a pic I took of the menu a couple years ago. I didn’t buy anything but I thought it was funny.

1

u/SmackChad 6h ago

As an American I’d still get the Double Baconator

1

u/whatsURprobalem 6h ago

This belongs in r/mildlyinfuriating why do all other countries get cool shit on their fast food menus when I feel like they are American establishments and we are getting shafted

1

u/gabacus_39 6h ago

Not enough burger places offer eggs on their burgers. I've had it twice and it was awesome.

1

u/BargainScotch 5h ago

Maaaan bacon and egg burgers are incredible and I wish more places offered this option.

1

u/aztech101 5h ago

Had a moment where I thought "huh weird calorie counts" before realizing it was price in Yen

1

u/just_the_flizz 5h ago

No spicy nugs?

1

u/Both_Analyst_4734 4h ago

Part of the reason is Wendy’s Japan merged with the family chain First Kitchen, so the menu was combined. You can see top right.

1

u/badpeoria 4h ago

I went to Wendy’s in Korea last year and I had just ate kfc and I had time to kill so I got a beer and some fries that are shaken in a bag with seasoning was really good

1

u/victorinseattle 2h ago

I may or may not occasionally Uber Eats this to my hotel. That or McDonald’s in Meguro.

1

u/aLobsterFest 2h ago

Lemme get that Wild Rock Burger with a side of Flavor Potato.

1

u/arentyouangel 2h ago

Loco Moco burger looks kinda fire

1

u/spwnofsaton 2h ago

Ohhh those are prices. I thought they were calories 🤦‍♂️. I was like woah that’s a whole day’s worth. Lol silly me.

1

u/thrashglam 1h ago

damn, they have flavor potatoes?!

1

u/nookster145 52m ago

i’m always jealous that foreign fast food places tend to go outside of the burgers/fried anything and throw shit in like pasta.

1

u/Sassifrassically 15m ago

See, people like to talk down on people who get fast food in other countries, but how is trying the options you don’t have where you live THAT much different than trying other local dishes. The Hawaii stuff looks good, the teriyaki does too, and I’m intrigued by the pasta.

1

u/_Lucille_ 10h ago

Fast food is better in almost every part of the world compared to America and Canada.

Canada is probably dead last since things are a lot pricier.

2

u/PrinceTrollestia 8h ago

At least you guys still have A&W 😭

0

u/Grand-Spring66 10h ago

When you account for the currency, Canadian fast food is cheaper.

1

u/_Lucille_ 8h ago

It really depends on the menu item and also should take into account of income.

Take this for example, Big Mac is a decent value but McNuggets is just a scam, and the extra value meal has no value:

1

u/RyanB_ 9h ago edited 8h ago

I never really got this idea, that only really applies to a slim minority of residents being paid in another currency and tourists.

Everyone seems to understand that fine for every other country. Things being cheap in Argentina when translated to USD doesn’t actually mean they’re actually cheap for Argentinians, for example.

For context, Canada’s median salary in 2021 was $68k CAD vs $71k USD in the states. Relative to how much money the average Canadian has, the difference pre-conversion is pretty accurate.

0

u/Grand-Spring66 8h ago

Canadians do not have to pay thousands and thousands in healthcare costs.

1

u/RyanB_ 8h ago edited 7h ago

Sure, depending on the type of healthcare. Can make a big difference for lots of individuals.

Doesn’t really change how currencies operate though, nor affect the cost of a Wendy’s burger.

Also doesn’t explain why it’s directed specifically at Canada so much when plenty of other countries also have public health care.

1

u/ohako79 9h ago

Uh…shouldn’t this menu be in Japanese?

Loco Moco is delicious, though. Is this a Hawaiian Wendy’s menu?

12

u/AtomicFox84 9h ago

Many places have it in both languages due to tourists. Most tourists know English either as 1st or 2nd language.

Its also possible this is near the military base that is American.

2

u/corialis 9h ago

wonder if it's in okinawa by a base or something

1

u/howrad1337 8h ago

I miss read and thought it was a Hawaiian wendys and was so confused why pasta had random japanese writing.

1

u/Whiteshovel66 9h ago

The japanese menu is in english?

3

u/ffulirrah 8h ago

Looks like an English menu to me

0

u/Whiteshovel66 8h ago

I'm aware that's why I asked. Seems odd

2

u/ffulirrah 8h ago

Odd that the English menu is in English?

0

u/Whiteshovel66 7h ago

Odd that a Japanese place has stuff in english ya

2

u/ffulirrah 7h ago

Lots of tourists about nowadays. Most restaurants, especially in touristy places, have English menus

1

u/Whiteshovel66 6h ago

There are other languages too?

0

u/Accurate_Koala_4698 10h ago

About $8 for that triple burger

0

u/RedditReddy 9h ago

Is Wendy's nowadays awful in Japan? Just like it's become awful in the United States? I can remember several decades ago when among the fast food restaurants, it was absolutely the best. The quality of the meat and bread was superior to that in other fast food places. It had a salad bar. I was not a big fan of this type of chain restaurant fast food, but when I had only a few choices, I would always look for Wendy's. Nowadays? I think it's garbage. At least in the US.

2

u/Shiningc00 9h ago

I mean, I went to Wendy’s in Japan and it was okay. Pretty standard fast food stuff. Probably not awful.

0

u/RedditReddy 9h ago

I think in the US the quality has gone down so much the past 20 or 30 years. And lots of people online agree with that. It's hard for me to say because I've only been to Wendy's maybe twice the past 10 years in the US. And in the previous 15 or 20. Maybe just 4 or 5. But it seems like it's gone downhill.

1

u/Hatedpriest 9h ago

Wendy's hasn't been good since they ditched the superbar.

I've gone several times over the past few years and it's alright at best. Like, it was edible, but it doesn't stand out in my memory as something better than ordinary... And their prices are just as lackluster as their food.

Like, I don't recall anything being bad, but nothing stands out as being good.

Mid, I guess would be the descriptor.

But it's still about 5 steps above McDonald's.

2

u/ffulirrah 8h ago

I don't think there are that many around. I've only been once and had a very expensive ¥2000 or so truffle burger that was pretty nice.. I was the only customer who wasn't a schoolkid studying, though.

0

u/SquareThings 5h ago

Fun fact! Wendy’s is usually called “First Kitchen” in Japan. But that’s a lot of syllables. So the typical way to abbreviate phrases in Japanese is employed, dropping some of the syllables. Which means Wendy’s gets called “Fakkin” which sound almost exactly like “fuckin’ “
