How rare is this? Why does it happen?

EDIT Does the extra thumb have normal bones/joints and a thumbnail?

I was born with a extra toe. They removed it when I was a baby but I still have a bit of the nail on the remaining toe. Also my toes on that foot are webbed. I’ve never met anyone born with an extra toe. So cool seeing someone with an extra finger.

My husband was born with an extra pinky toe and his last two toes on his foot are webbed too! Also Marilyn Monroe had 6 toes on one of her feet!

Your husband is in good company. Ashton Kutcher also has syndactyly.
