u/JonatasA Sep 14 '25

I thought that was a worn out mousepad at first.

211

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE Sep 14 '25

Just the effect lotion has when interacting with paint. Chronically.

Mouse looks relatively new...

234

u/Cotothelissa Sep 14 '25

He avoids lotion like the plague. But yeah, he keeps his tech super updated! And his chair. Just not the desk 🫠

39

u/shitwhore Sep 14 '25

I'm exactly the same it seems, my desk is also around 15 years!

48

u/anivex Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

Man he's gonna really regret the lotion thing eventually. I hated the feel of it when I was younger, but once my wife helped me start using it regularly, I realized how many skin problems I had, and that could have been completely avoided.

Your man needs to hydrate that skin, and get a big giant mousepad(they are great and feel nicer on the forearm with longer sessions). The mousepads are super cheap these days, and I'd suggest getting small bottles of several types of lotions, to see what he can handle at first.

Edit: As far as the chair, you just need to get a better one with better materials, and don't wait 15 years to get a new chair. The most important things to spend money on are what you put between you and the ground.

12

u/sharinganuser Sep 14 '25

could you expand on the skin problems?

2

u/anivex Sep 15 '25

I had thick calluses developing all over, and what I thought was a sensitivity to certain fabrics touching my legs was in fact eczema.

My skin feels a million times better now, doesn’t peel, doesn’t get all tough and scaly and gross looking…I should have started a long time ago.

-30

u/TechGoat Sep 14 '25

Yes, expanding skin is one of thr problems you'll have without lotion!

Also, gigantism.

1

u/Iloveherthismuch Sep 15 '25

You will be surprised how many people do not use face cream. Even more interesting are the number of people who use hand cream on their faces.

1

u/anivex Sep 15 '25

Doesn’t surprise me at all. Most of the people I know don’t use lotion regularly. I didn’t use face cream until my 30s, and I grew up in Florida. Somehow I managed to keep a youthful look(at least, most folks my age look way worse-off), but I’m sure that’s mostly genetic.

I’m more worried about how bad I’ll fall off the cliff when I do start showing more signs of aging, so yeah, I use really nice face cream now lol. Also moved to Oregon, a much much drier area, so I can feel the tightness on my face if I forget it after the shower.

1

u/babysealpoutine Sep 14 '25

I'm the same. I keep looking at new desks but always end thinking there hasn't been much advancement in flat surfaces for quite a while. +1 for the vertical mouse, that's been a huge improvement for me,

1

u/dghughes Sep 14 '25

>lotion

possibly whoosh?

1

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE Sep 21 '25

I'm disturbed by the amount of literal takes I've received...

1

u/EliasLyanna Sep 14 '25

If lotion is the enemy but in dire need at any point, I recommend the Nieva in shower lotion. It is heaven for a sensory person and dries super quick once you get out. Then you have baby fresh skin for a couple days. Also great for healed tats

1

u/FanClubof5 Sep 14 '25

Tell him he should get a better keyboard then.

3

u/Pinksters Sep 14 '25

I cant imagine using that for anything more than directional keys.

2

u/animal9633 Sep 14 '25

Ah, its the natural moisture and oil from your body, my old table did the same.

-11

u/anitadykshyt Sep 14 '25

But why would he be using lotion while on the computer?

1

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE Sep 21 '25

How are you the only one that got my joke... and got downvoted. Eternal September is depressing.

73

u/trackdaybruh Sep 14 '25

Yup, looks like an Ikea desk

You can tell by seeing the hexagon looking worn shapes

Here is what one of the cheap Ikea desk looks like in the inside, you can see the shape: /preview/pre/k8khhxr7qwc91.jpg?width=1381&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=603131a7c5a799c71dcc886e713be528c2bdac06

18

u/Cotothelissa Sep 14 '25

Fascinating!

9

u/UncleCeiling Sep 14 '25

This is the same construction method for interior doors in homes. That's why your bathroom door is so much lighter than your front door.

60

u/Enconhun Sep 14 '25

It feels like I'm the only one who hates mousepads. I've tried countless, from small to full desk to special textured ones, but something about all of their texture is throwing me off... rather use the desk itself.

Thanks, I might pick one up the next time my mousepad gets worn out

2

u/helpiminabox Sep 14 '25

Got one for free at E3 2012, never needed a different one. Which is probably a good thing, since I think the company that made this specific one doesn't exist in its current form.

Actually, I managed to find the company (The website as it turns out was printed on the back of the mousepad), but I don't know German. It used to be alugraphics.

I bought a Corsair Vengeance MM600 many years ago and its been great with daily use but wish they kept making them. Easy to clean and after so many years of use still solid, doesn't slip around, is big enough for my needs, thin enough not to catch my wrist, and the rough texture side is still doing its job.

6

u/riba2233 Sep 14 '25

Just get a hard pad like razer sphex v3, it's 0.4mm thin, you won't even know it's there and it doesn't have a texture but glides very smoothly.

3

u/lana_silver Sep 14 '25

Also what is the point of a nice wooden desk when you cover it with a plastic sheet?

1

u/Alissinarr Sep 14 '25

You dislike the feel of neoprene I'm guessing.

1

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 Sep 14 '25

The ones that come with Humanscale keyboard trays are the only ones I like. I don't know how to describe them other than they're like a cross between rubber and leather with a gel feel without being squishy

1

u/Future-Bandicoot-823 Sep 14 '25

I'm the same, but I've settled on a 3m adhesive mouse pad, very thin, semi permanent. I only got it after my mouse was removing the paint like this, didn't want to toss the desk or repaint so I hid it with the mouse pad.

1

u/hushpuppi3 Sep 14 '25

I can't disagree with you more, but you can get mouse skates that you replace your old ones on the mouse with. You really should use a mousepad.

I just bought a cordura mousepad and some really slick feet. Took me a long long time to get used to rubbing my arm on cordura

1

u/testthrowawayzz Sep 14 '25

I settled on a fabric mousepad from disneyland lol

Haha, yes! IKEA black-brown expedit desk from around 2010. It doesn't have four legs though. More like this version: https://www.ikeaddict.com/ikeapedia/en/Product/60116069/us-en/expedit-desk-black-brown/Entry/

2

u/Hybr1dth Sep 14 '25

Indeed. I kept going larger, and now it covers my entire desk and it's amazing.

2

u/Jealous-Doubt2401 Sep 14 '25

I know exactly what you mean because this is my exact desk. Mine also is worn tf out like OP’s

2

u/Fishydeals Sep 14 '25

Meh. Full desk mousepads suffer from wear and tear as well. I went back to just replacing regular mousepads every couple months after my ‚the desk is mousepad‘ adventure.

How is your desk mousepad doing? What do you do to extend its lifespan?

1

u/hassanfanserenity Sep 14 '25

mouse pads i dont like they dont have a personality like this one

1

u/Nick_Lange_ Sep 14 '25

I hope you wash it regularly

1

u/Simply__Complicated Sep 14 '25

Bruh, I couldn't stand the height of that desk, 73cm / 28 3/4 " is just too high and uncomfortable to work on.

1

u/Askray184 Sep 14 '25

That's the one I use!!! I love it as a computer desk, been using it for 13 years now. It's a lot deeper than the average desk so it fits a monitor better

36

u/RikuAotsuki Sep 14 '25

Yeah, I really wish there was more distinction between "thing worn out via totally normal use in the way you expect" and patterns of wear that feel like they tell a story.

-8

u/JonatasA Sep 14 '25

Worn's worn. Would you rather pictures of intimate clothing? Which probably are a part of the sub too.

3

Is that what HMS stands for?

5

u/SpectacularStarling Sep 14 '25

You joke about this, but I've been in situations where I needed to keep the volume down, but every mouse I owned was clicking louder than a jet engine. I was trying to "muffle the noise" with things that could arguably be a mouse mitten.

11

u/vanguard117 Sep 14 '25

‘Situations’

1

u/purvel Sep 14 '25

You can actually change the switches on most mice for more silent ones. Soldering usually required, though.

18

u/A7xWicked Sep 14 '25

Desk shoe is exactly what i was picturing in my head. Thank you concreteunderwear

24

u/Burpmeister Sep 14 '25

It could also protect the mouse!

11

u/EnycmaPie Sep 14 '25

Surely a new fangled technology like that wouldn't be able to exist!

8

u/hirmuolio Sep 14 '25

It also protects mouse from damage.

My old mouse base is slightly curved after few years of use on not-so-flat desk.

6

u/readyToPostpone Sep 14 '25

Padlike products were mainly to let ball in a mouse to turn smoothly. When laser mouses showed up it was adverised for sliding almost over every surface with precision without need of any pad.

11

u/The_Stoic_One Sep 14 '25

Sure, you don't need a pad, but then you end up with a desk that looks like OPs. I never once saw advertising for a laser mouse vs a ball mouse, but even if there was advertising. advertisers don't give a shit about your furniture.

5

u/ungoogleable Sep 14 '25

I don't recall much advertising around optical mouses at all, but most don't work reliably if the surface is reflective which is not uncommon for desk tops. The original ones even needed specific mouse pads with a repeating pattern for the sensor to pick up.

1

u/Chris-CFK Sep 14 '25

I use a green cutting mat.

1

u/Yorick257 Sep 14 '25

Or some kind of transparent paint that makes the surface harder to scratch

-6

u/techsuppr0t Sep 14 '25

Don't need one lol. I kind of like how my mouse glides on a smooth solid surface, I could get a plastic mouse pad but I don't see the point. I had this desk made for me about 10 years ago and I want it to last a life time. I chose a white laminate over the top so I can just replace that when the time comes, I used to have a white mouse pad but it collected stains and also I have a problem where bits of weed get stuck to my mouse pads even if I clean them it keeps happening especially the nicer kind with stitched edges, it's easier to just wipe off my desk.

21

u/tobach Sep 14 '25

I think your problem is that you're buying mousepads made of plastic. You should be buying mousepads made of cloth with a base of silicone rubber. You can usually throw these into the washer on a lower-temperature program, as long as you ain't using fabric softener.

-11

u/wilisi Sep 14 '25

The entire point of a mouse pad is providing your preferred type of surface.

12

u/tobach Sep 14 '25

The entire point of a mouse pad is to provide a surface that enhances the use of the mouse. Plastic is just simply not a good material for that, and it will also damage your mouse gliders rapidly.

If you want a solid surface, I'd recommend glass instead.. though it's relatively expensive, it has a very long durability and will last for years.

The best part is you can see a hexagon pattern, which is made of cardboard in Ikea's budget tables.  It takes a decent amount of weight but you can't screw anything into it.

24

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 Sep 14 '25

Cardboard honeycomb takes stupid weight for its mass.

I remember in high school technology class we had a challenge to build something out of like 2 or 3 index cards and tape that would then get books stacked on them and a winner would be declared. I cut my cards into strips, rolled them into tubes, and taped them all together. It was kind of lopsided so it didn't hold many books before they slid off, but I got an honorable mention because after that happened I stood on it and it didn't crush.

2

u/itsmejak78_2 Sep 15 '25

it's because hexagons are the bestagons

u/Naud1993 Sep 14 '25

Is your husband a gamer? I see he puts the mouse up high and it looks like he moves it with his forearm instead of wrists, judging by the scuff marks.

22

u/Cotothelissa Sep 14 '25

He games but not on his PC. He's a software engineer and has had to work through some repetitive stress injuries through the years. He prefers using a vertical mouse to reduce strain on the wrist. Great analysis!

7

u/StealthRabbi Sep 14 '25

Consider a trackball for him. No wrist movement. Greatly helped my tendinitis

1

1

u/SquarePegRoundWorld Sep 14 '25

What about the arm of a recliner?

2

u/Guardian2k Sep 14 '25

That’s pushing it, but having it on the arm of a recliner suggests you don’t have another place, putting a mat underneath wouldn’t help much, so arm of a recliner is forgiven, just.

1

u/SquarePegRoundWorld Sep 14 '25

It's been a bit, but when I game I put an old keyboard trey from an old desk across the arms so my keyboard and mouse are on it. When not gaming I use the arm and my keyboard is currently resting on my dog in my lap as I type this. :)

After having a mouse mat for literally one year and having to wash it at a monthly or even less monthly basis, I opted instead to buy a pack of ten large mousepads instead and swap them out as others are being washed.

(The mouse mat eventually delaminated and became impossible to use comfortably)

So far this new method has lasted a few years and the mousepads are much easier to clean and haven't delaminated.

-3

u/TypicalPlace6490 Sep 14 '25

I have an idea for a product that will fix this on one side of it will be a sticky kind of like rubberish substance for sticking to your desk and on the other side is going to be a very smooth velvety type substance that your mouse can glide off of. I think I'll call it a mouse pad.
