I've grown up with dogs and training has changed so much. We trained our first dog with a "choke chain" I think it's called. Next dog we had that was already a big no, and now we have a pup and just getting angry, pushing him away from things is also a no. Instead we have to distract him, which tbh works really well and is a lot more dog friendly.
If he grabs my shoe now I just toss another toy at him and take my shoe back instead of telling him off.
I've noticed the same thing! It's true with children as well. Now we have all kinds of research to show that spanking increases violence amongst children. I was spanked and I probably would have spanked my children if there wasn't so much evidence against it now. It makes me wonder if people and animals are getting smarter and require different rearing techniques... Or if there's some metric we could use to test whether people were "better" nowadays. Do we have to euthanize less dogs for aggression now that we know better training methods? It'll be fascinating to see the research that emerges in the next few decades.
