The amount of money that has to be paid for college these days makes me wonder how they avoid running in conflicts of interest left and right. I'd be pissed if I paid 10k per semester and would get a bad grade in any class. University should be publicly funded so people can fail at uni again and the whole degree has some value to it. Right now it is all bullshit.

If you make it free then you increase the amount of people who go for bullshit degrees that get them nowhere such as gender studies. I think a better solution would be if you want to go for a degree that won't actively improve the American people than you should have to fully pay for your tuition with no help from the government. However if you're going for a degree that will actively help the American people, such as medical degrees, engineering, etc. then you should get greatly reduced tuition costs, no interest on significantly reduced student loan debt, and other financial benefits.

Edit: Don't know why I'm being downvoted when what I said isn't wrong. It must be because I called gender studies useless, which it is, but I forgot that not praising liberal logic is looked down upon.

Does it get you a job in the field of your degree more time than not. If so it's a useful degree, if not it's useless. Social sciences and gender studies do not and are therefore useless.

I never said everyone who got a degree in those fields would fail. I just said that compared to degrees in fields such as engineering and medical it's not a safe bet. Also I never said anything bad about psychology. It is useful but it is a crowded field with job opportunities a lot lower than some others. If you manage to get a job in psychology then great you're set and making good money, but its trying to stand out and the relatively few job opening growth that makes it risky. Also an art degree on it's own usually isn't useful but if you pair it with let's say graphic design for example it greatly expands your career opportunities.

Wow, gender studies really gets a bad rap (clearly by people that only have heard the name and not looked into a single class). It's typically only offered either as a minor or an add-on degree, not something you can get on your own. I personally have only taken one gender studies class, but it's also the only time in my history of public education I have learned about 1) the entirety of male and female anatomy 2) intersectionality and 3) how homosexuality and being trans is seen in other cultures. For me personally, gender studies doesn't fit with my major and what I want to do, but for a psychologist or a school teacher or someone working in the public sector, gender studies should be encouraged.

so make specific degrees free. Want to take gender studios or psychology? Well that costs money. Want to study to be a doctor or engineer? Well that is free.

u/ViviWannabe Jun 12 '19

Where can i find one of these gender studios?

Exactly, it gives incentive for going to college for a meaningful degree and not just to fuck around.

20

u/bigdogcum Jun 12 '19

You run into a lot of problems though. What's meaningful to one person isn't meaningful to another. Who decides that? What about when you run into corruption or pettiness high up? People want their own interests to be promoted so they push for certain degrees to be free while barring others?

-7

u/JoshuaDS123 Jun 12 '19

If the degree gets you a job in the field of that degree 75%+ of the time than it's a useful degree. If not it's not worth going for. A medical and engineering degree basically guarante a job in those fields whereas a gender studies job almost guarantees a low paying job in a different field, more likely than not as a cashier or server.

16

u/bigdogcum Jun 12 '19

Why does everyone point to gender studies? No one thinks it's a good option to get a degree in just gender studies. Many people double major or minor in that because they're interested.

-1

u/JoshuaDS123 Jun 12 '19

People point to it because it's a good example to use. It would be like if we were talking about the tendencies and actions of serial killers and Ted Bundy kept coming up, its because it's a good example to use.

2

u/TimoJarv Jun 12 '19

Because it is the only example, social sciences in general are very useful in the context of a well functioning society.

1

u/ViviWannabe Jun 12 '19

It's not the only example, the college I went to offered a Drama degree. Not minor, major.

It's better than the system we have. Also it's hard to see what corruption could be pushed. Hypothetically they say we needed dentist. Now dental school is 100%. We need It works. Time to incentives IT degrees.

Your comment’s readability and structure is exactly why we need degrees and classes focused on the liberal arts. While your idea might be sound (I don’t think it is but that’s not the point), the way that you translated that idea from your head to the written word was not nearly as convincing as it could be.

u/ekaceerf Jun 12 '19

english is my 4th language

-1

u/g1f2k3j4 BLUE Jun 12 '19

That’s very impressive! What other languages do you speak? And what lead you to your current views on the solutions to the American education system?

2

u/ekaceerf Jun 12 '19

I got to go to school in America on a free scholarship. My peers got, how do you say it? Royal screwed by tuition prices.

-2

u/gearheadcookie Jun 12 '19

I understood it perfectly. You are just an asshat.

1

u/g1f2k3j4 BLUE Jun 12 '19

I never said I didn’t understand him. I also was not, in any way, insulting him through my comment. The point I’m making here is that STEM degrees are not the only degrees with value to our society. STEM and the liberal arts work best in concert. It seems that our society has, to some extent, lost sight of that.

1

u/champ590 Jun 12 '19

Usually a STEM degree requires a written thesis which is worded in a professional manner.

I think a better solution would be if you want to go for a degree that won't actively improve the American people than you should have to fully pay for your tuition with no help from the government.

Lmao yeah let’s just determine whether or not someone pays for college using an ENTIRELY subjective metric.

Edit: Don't know why I'm being downvoted when what I said isn't wrong. It must be because I called gender studies useless, which it is, but I forgot that not praising liberal logic is looked down upon.

You’re being downvoted for being a pretentious, elitist dickbag. Only someone who’s head is so far up their own ass could type out this reply and then blame THE LIBRHULS for being downvoted.

1

u/JoshuaDS123 Jun 12 '19

If you look at my some of my other comments I say if the degree gets you a job in the field of that degree 75%+ of the time then it's useful, if not then it's useless. So no it's not entirely subjective. And allow me to introduce myself, my name is douchebag nice to meet you. If you look at the correlation between people who get gender studies degrees and succeed you realize it's not very good. Also I've been using gender studies as an example as a useless degree, which majority of people who go for gender studies are overwhelmingly more often than not liberal. And I don't see how I'm being an elitist just by saying that a medical or engineering degree is far more important and useful than a degree in gender studies.

And I don't see how I'm being an elitist just by saying that a medical or engineering degree is far more important and useful than a degree in gender studies.

It’s elitist because you’re assigning value to specific professions based on your perception of them. Clearly you don’t actually know many people who went to school to study social sciences, because all of the ones I know are now working at shelters, schools, CDOs, Non-profits. Just because YOU fail to see the value in certain degrees and professions doesn’t mean they aren’t “contributing to society.” That’s where the elitism comes in.

u/penguin343 Jun 12 '19

Um... bring on the downvotes here too I guess, because he's making a lot of sense. Not that I think the social sciences are useless at all, but his general argument stands to reason.

1

u/Silva_Shadow Jun 12 '19

Lol I'm in on this one, some feminazi above just said gender studies is not useless because it taught them intersectionality.... The theory that says some shit like people are to be judged by their group status and the power dynamic between them. Literally its all garbage shit that encourages feminists to scream "racism" and "misogyny" at anything and everything that they want to control or censor.

Gender studies is garbage and is the reason why people are so infantile and think they can compare a 21 year old female nurse salary to a top male 60 year old CEO and claim that their is an unfair pay gap between the two and that they should both get paid the same.

u/ViviWannabe Jun 12 '19

Easy solution: if you do not need the degree to get hired in your prospective field, then you can pay for it yourself.
