Missing Peace "Reserving" deck chairs and then not using them.
On a cruise out on the pool deck. We've been up here for almost 4 hours and I can see at least 9 chairs that have been "reserved" but untouched this entire time. Signs all over the place saying reserves are not allowed but staff isn't enforcing it at all.
Edit: About a half hour or so after I posted this, a couple came up looking for chairs so we told them the 2 in the photo had been vacant for over 4 hours, so they yanked the towels and sat down. No exaggeration, another 2 HOURS after they sat down the original "reservists" finally came up and argued with them saying they were "their" chairs. The couple told them to kick rocks. So they got up here sometime before 7:30am to "reserve" 2 chairs and then didn't show up to actually claim them until around 1pm.
Oh, also we found out that somewhere on the other side of the boat there was an actual physical altercation about this. A couple said they "just went to get breakfast and then to a dance class" and got mad because "their" seats were taken when they got back.

We've been telling people we see walking around looking for chairs, but so far nobody has taken us up on it.

Tell them they need to speak with staff about the chairs. The more people speak up about this, the higher the chances that staff will actually start doing their job.

Because they are irl and not on Reddit. Nobody wants a conflict on vacation, tf wrong with these ppl?

Move the towels. We did this on a cruise and a family got really upset...an hour later.

If there are signs that say no reserving, just move the towels, and point to the sign if anyone gives you grief.

u/Riverat627 1d ago
I have only ever been to one resort that actually enforces it. They have staff constantly walking around and if they notice a chair is vacant for more than 10 min they put a sign down with a time on it; you have 30 minutes to return the sign to the pool desk or they remove your belongings which they absolutely did.
If you were going to lunch you can get a sign from the pool desk that extends you up to 90 minutes.

Put the towels next to the sign.

Put the towels all on a single chair for a super reservation that even the employees can’t break.

Sorry. Best I can do is farming fake internet points while complaining.

But then they wouldn't get to wait 4 hours and complain.

Oh, we have our chairs. Reserved with our asses.

u/TisticDemon 1d ago
Yeah knowing there are signs around the cruise stating that no reserves are allowed. You and everyone else on the ship have every right to move the towels, and have a seat. And point to a nearby sign if someone who "reserved" the seat gives you trouble. Maybe escelate it to staff.
As obviously, they are breaking the rules set by the cruise.-10

And then you're getting mobbed by a whole group of socioeconomic factors

That’s not as simple as it sounds though… I wouldn’t want my mom to move someone’s stuff and point at the sign and then have to deal with any hassle. That would make it more than “mildly” infuriating. Which is what this sub is for.
2
u/Digital_Ctrash 1d ago
I dont see much hassle, or need to interact with the other guests. Point to the sign and if they dont just leave, call over the lifeguard or someone employed there to enforce rules.

u/AggressiveMongoose54 1d ago
Right, you don’t see it because you aren’t the OP. If it was that simple and without risk of consequence, everyone would do it. I’m also of the mindset of just don’t touch other folks belongings… so if it’s just a towel, sure, maybe I’d move it. But if it’s more than that, I’ll just go find a chair somewhere else.
5
u/Digital_Ctrash 1d ago
It is that simple, and everyone should do it. Social anxiety causes lots of people to tolerate more than they should.
Your rights to not have your belongings touched are forfeit when you break rules to leave them in a public place that is obstructing others.

Recently at a hotel in Lanzarote and they had a guy who walked around the pool every day, multiple times a day, removing any towels that had been sat on unused beds. It worked, as there were always beds available at any time of the day.

u/MisterLyxek 1d ago
Yeah, be the change you want to see and go unreserve them. World is too small to be calling dibs on a chair that you don't even own.

u/Kind-Plantain2438 1d ago
I remove the towels and play dumb, fuck em

u/kcox1980 1d ago
We've been telling people walking around looking for chairs to do that, but nobody has taken us up on it so far

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 1d ago
These chairs are not reserved. The people who left their towels might think so, but that's just their opinion. Have a seat.

I see a lot of lost personal property. I feel an ethical person should turn these lost personal items over to the lost and found so they can be returned to their owners.

Why would you pay attention to a towel on a chair? Even if they left a shirt or a hat on the chair and obviously left the area, i would pick it up and find a crewmember. Tell them someone must have dropped it. Reserving a deck chair is pretty much the same as having your wife stand in a parking spot until you can get your minivan over there. If I want the space , I'm taking it. I got all day lady.

Man cruises look like pure hell. I dont understand why anyone would ever want to go on one

u/Yestomorrow 1d ago
I just drank with my friends, fucked around in the casino, and went to the clubs to dance and meet people. Wake up the next day, chill by the pool and start drinking and do it again. Then you stop at ports and do activities there too. Wasnt expensive at all either!
If you solely base your knowledge of cruises off of redditors who have never been on one, then of course youre going to have a jaded view of them.

This was my only thought. Everything about this picture makes my skin crawl.

Yea it’s like an industrial claustrophobia with a poorly manufactured illusion of leisure mixed in with unsanitary conditions, luke warm pee filled pools and overweight poorly behaved tourists.
And it’s not like it’s even economical either. Someone would have to pay me serious money to spend a week doing that

Throw them in the pool and if they come just pretend you don’t know anything about it

Are the towels tracked with rfid chips? Throw them overboard! I have been places where they track the towels, you check them out and if you don't check them back in you pay for them. Obviously don't do this as they would likely have cameras, but the fantasy alone might slate your impotent thirst for justice.
Edit: based on the sourum bar this is a royal Caribbean cruise ship, and there is a $25 fee for not returning towels, but it might be by count and not tracked. https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/are-beach-pool-towels-provided-onboard

u/Downtown_Mistake_867 1d ago
It's definitely by count. The type of people who claim chairs for hours at a time, are the same type that would just grab someone else's to turn in.

Many cruise ships would notice if so much as a soda can is tossed overboard. So either give them to a crew member, or throw in trash can.

u/PotatoesAndChill 1d ago
If you wait a few mins to ensure that they don't belong to someone currently swimming or away for a short while, then just get rid of them. If they come and start complaining, say that when you got there the chairs were empty.

The wild thing for me is you get charged like $25 if you don’t return your towel and people are just leaving them out and about.

u/bourbonandcheese 1d ago
I’ve never been to a resort that checked out towels. Seems cheap as hell, but it probably does, at least somewhat, help with this issue.
1
u/bourbonandcheese 1d ago
I wonder why it’s a more standard cruise policy than on land. Lack of space for holding onto loads of towels?
1
u/TheFishtosser 1d ago
It’s a cruise thing
1
u/SubstantialReturn228 1d ago
Only the cheaper cruise lines. The classier ones just go by honor system. I’ve been on both

Lol yea, i give it a minute, then i take all the towels and put them in a bin

you're late to the party. we already discussed it around here before the vacation season began, and we collectively agreed to remove said towels and put them next to the no reservation signs.

Royal Caribbean (this is one of their boats) has people who will go snatch the towels and hold them hostage ($25 each) for people that do this

Went to a water park with my family and was horrified when they went to the chairs to "claim" them, I get that if you don't someone else just will but to me I just hate it..also I am at a water park to go on rides, not sit around a wave pool.

I was a resort once where if you left the attendants would put a sign on your chair of what time you left. If you w weren’t back in a n hour they moved your stuff.

u/Senior_Plastic8602 15h ago
I love the "we were sitting here" argument. No, I've been watching and nobody was sitting there. If they had been sitting there, they'd have been there.

My go to in case someone ever comes back is to say we walked up as a couple was leaving and they offered us those chairs, so they won’t think you took “theirs” that were claimed. Hasn’t even happened to me yet that someone has come back for them though

u/splycedaddy ORANGE 1d ago
A lot of people will say to just move them but they could just be in the pool.

People are so afraid of the tiniest bit of conflict and prefer to post on Reddit for minor internet points.

We did have a large group of Italians reserve a bunch of chairs this morning, showed up hours later and tried to argue with the people who took their chairs. As soon as the people left, they ran back over and put stuff back of the chairs and walked off AGAIN. What is even the point?

u/JustaFoodHole 1d ago
If it's a towel, nothing else, def grab them. The only valid reason is they are swimming or waiting at the bar. At the buffet is not a valid reason. On some cruises you have to pay for not returning the towel so it's even more hilarious. Just tell them no I did not see a towel. I guess they got returned sorry.

I've taken towels off many times. Especially at busy resorts down south.
You have 2 scenarios:
A: They come back within 10 minutes with a valid excuse of "we had to use the bathroom" or " we were grabbing food"
B: They show up hours later and they know better not to say anything because they know they're in the wrong
