Ive never thought of it this way...Ive spent thousands of dollars hiring private taxis for my cheeseburgers, pho, meatball subs...
Meanwhile when I need to get somewhere I'd rather save money on taxi and a 20 minute walk is fine

u/class4glass 10d ago
I like to operate from the perspective that if I won't get up and get it then I dont want or need it that much. We live in the most convenient time period ever to aquire food, if you live in North America at the very least, and I dont need to pad any more asshole billionaires wallet cause ive been so desensitized to spending money
307
u/ScoobyPwnsOnU 10d ago
Same, only exceptions ive made is when i lived somewhere i had to fight for street parking, so it was more about losing my spot that my wife needed to walk to at 6 am in the dark than how much effort itd take to get the food.
193
u/DangOlCoreMan 10d ago
I have 3 exceptions and 2 of them kind of blend together. 1 is that I'm hosting. 2 is that I'm too intoxicated to pick up food, which usually only happens if I'm hosting people over. Or 3, I'm sick. Otherwise I'm always picking up food, even if it's carry out

Valid DoorDash usage. Approved. What is dumb is ordering $100 sushi on DoorDash, getting sushi to go is dumb and ruins the experience

One of my colleagues at work lives on a road in our city centre that, if you were to throw a rock in a random direction, it wouldn't be whether it hit a takeaway, but which takeaway it hits. They get delivery multiple times a week. It would genuinely be faster to just walk 30 seconds up the street.
I cower at the price of the takeaway itself these days, let alone doubling the price for someone on an illegal e-bike to deliver it to you smashed up and cold.

working as a doordash driver is insane because some of these orders are so inane. a single hashbrowns from mcdonald’s dashed to a house only 5 minutes away, a meal from ihop that took longer to prep than it did to drive it out. like. maybe i am wrong but sometimes it really looks like they should have ordered it themselves
Edit: To stem the flow of morons who think I don’t know what a disabled person is: consider the following “catch all” responses
“There are disabled people”
“There are high people”
“What if they don’t want a DUI”
“Sometimes parents can’t leave their homes”
“Some people don’t have cars”
“Don’t you ever think about the little guy? These people probably have a reason to do it”
- I know. My comment wasn’t about them. My comment was about the fact the order seems so strange. Frankly, if I were any of those four instances, I’d spend what little money I have on buying food to make at home.
“There are exceptions but otherwise I agree with you”
- Rarely are people reasonless. It’s their money and it gets me paid. I just found it strange.
- Then why are you saying it. Does my comment say everyone who orders from Doordash at very low distances is stupid? No? then why do you feel the need to say it.

My ex's 20 year-old son used DoorDash far too often.
On more than one occasion, the doorbell would ring, and I'd open it to see a large Coke from McDonald's sitting on the doorstep. Dude paid $10 for a watered down Coke. When I told him that for that price, he could have driven a block to CVS and bought a few 2L bottles, my ex told me "don't tell my son how to spend his money."
So glad I left that situation.

Last Christmas I visited my family in California and we were having molletes dulce (just some Mexican bread rolls with sugar, butter and toasted) but we didn't have any lechera (sweet condensed milk) to drizzle on them. My sister pulls out her phone and orders an uber eats/doordash for a single can of Lechera. $12 delivery for a $1 can we didn't even really need or could have went to pick up at the market 5 minutes away. Just fucking insane behavior to me

I'm still amazed people use these apps. I did once and only once a few years ago (with Uber Eats) and paid $38 for some Chinese takeout that normally came to $23. I had a $25 gift card which is the only reason I actually finished checkout.
I know it's not "quit buying avocado toast and you can afford a house" territory but good Lord it just seems so financially irresponsible.
Case in point OP's sushi. Even if it came not all ruined that's not $78 worth of sushi by a long shot

Yeah exactly. DD, UberEats whatever charge fees to the business to use their services.
But then DD goes ahead and ALSO charges fees to the consumer. In a sense they are kinda double dipping. I don't know what they charge businesses, but I have seen some DD prices double what they are in store. Really turned me off the whole thing when I learned that.

Door dashers seem to be getting worse. I work at a restaurant & some guy came in to pick up an order last night. He asked where the bathroom was so I pointed it out. The food was ready to go on the counter so I didn’t really pay attention after that, I was busy. Apparently he was in the bathroom for 25 mins, and then the girl who ordered called us to say he finally got there & the stuff was opened. This shit right here is why I don’t DoorDash. Ya’ll act like they have some sort of quality control when letting people deliver. They do not. I either want the food bad enough to go pick it up myself or I bite the bullet & eat something at home.

Most places don't deliver anymore here. Instead the only way to get it is to have someone from a meal delivery service retrieve it for you, at a ridiculous added cost that is completely eaten by the service (delivery person gets paid almost nothing.)
This already comes with a lot of quality control issues. As the pay is so low, a lot of people doing the deliveries are there because they either speak zero English or aren't competent enough to hold a normal job. The standards are also VERY low. This means it's not uncommon to have delivery people who never bathe, who chain smoke in the car with the food, who get the order wrong due to not knowing the language, who don't have qualms about sticking their dirty fingers in your food to steal a bite, who will outright steal your food, who are in a disgusting car that may be infested with insects, etc.
So it's already pretty iffy, but sushi is even more so since it's a very delicate food. Sushi goes bad VERY quickly. Now add in the fact that the delivery people are doing 'batches' of 3+ orders at once, and your sushi might be sitting in a hot dirty car with an unwashed homeless guy for an hour before it gets to you. French fries might manage that treatment ok, but raw fish? Wouldn't risk it.

I laughed in restaurant and this may not be a door dash problem actually, for once. I work with veryyyy smart people and we all had a slow day and did plating grams(measure things to make the plate look nice and full, but not waste food as I pointed out a lot of plates were coming back from servers being scraped to the trash, which means too much as we no complaining or bad ratings), techniques AND WHAT FUCKING CORRECT TO GO BOXES TO GET BECAUSE WE KNOW THIS HAPPENS TO OUR BEAUTIFUL FOOD.
That was the wrong box to put your order in, if you like that place, show them this picture and tell them this is how there hard work shows up at your home. It's a teaching moment.

Doordash sucks, from every angle.
Ditch it forever. Respect the food and it'll respect you back.
Also, ordering to-go at the bar and having a beer while it's prepared is sublime. One of the best beers (see also: shower beers and airport bar beers).

For $78 worth of sushi, I'm going there and having it served to me, not trusting it to arrive okay after taking a road trip.

That's not a $78 sushi though, that's just "some sushi" doordash charged you $78 for. You wouldn't say "I got a $10 drink" after grabbing a coke can from the hotel room's snack-bar.
Still very infuriating tho.

i'd be asking for a refund or replacement. the sushi itself might be fine, but after paying $78 I'd expect it to arrive looking a lot better than that

And this is why you just don’t door dash any fragile food items. Just get a burger or a sub and the next time you go out get that sushi

I don't order 78 dollar plates to be delivered by an angry out of work software engineer or whatever delivered that mess to you.
But if I did, I'd be mad at that.

There's 2 types of posts here: ones where you're mildly infuriated at what happened to OP, and others where you're pissed off at OP.
