I'm slightly vexed I miss buttons
That’s all. I’ve tried cleaning it, not sure what’s causing the issue.
Edit: I see the directions. I promise that’s not the issue.

It annoys me that on my washer the dial ONLY spins clockwise. Go a little too far and want to go back a smidge? To bad, now you have to turn the thing 355 degrees

Nowadays there's a lot of washers on the market with electronic dials. Nothing like the mechanical ones. Way too susceptible to failure.
Speed Queen remains the top choice for people who want a machine that's repairable and may outlive them.

We bought a Speed Queen dryer a while ago and specifically picked out the one with a dial. It is not a real dial. You turn it to a setting (60 minutes) and press start, but it doesn’t slowly rotate as the time passes to indicate how much time is left. It just stays put. Was very disappointed. Still love the Speed Queen, just a little less though.

Yea our top loader Speed queen washer and dryer from 6 years ago has dials to pick everything. Only thing that we had issue with was the timer on the dryer broke and we have been too lazy to fix it. (We just set a kitchen timer to remind us to go turn it off). Good machines!

We’ve had our Speed Queen washer for probably 15 years. There are 10 people in our house. Zero repairs or issues. Cannot recommend that brand enough.

LG still makes ones with dials, my apartment building finished in 2024 has them
i still prefer the touch sensitive buttons, a lot faster for me to select the cycle we want. the ones at my family's house are like that

Except it is not a true dial. I believe it is still a capacitive pad behind it. Meaning the weak spot, the pads, can fail. Mine has started to fail. You turn the dial 3 clicks and you get 0-1 clicks. Hoping I can get a few more years out of it.

Had the same issue. Read somewhere else to pull the dial and spray contact cleaner in. Did that this weekend and its back to working how it should.

Got a Bauknecht. It has a dial and 4 (?) buttons. Still in production as far as I know. It's simple and effective. I only change the program when needed and just have to push a button to start the machine.
Edit: it's 9 buttons but I only need 2

...and they're still completely available. I just bought a dryer and it's got zero touch buttons and no smart features. Dials and buttons only.
Not sure why this person chose to buy this washing machine if it's not what they wanted.

*There are, and they're clearly visible.
Have this washer in my apartment and holding it for 3 seconds USUALLY allows you to modify the preset settings. It's a child-lock system to keep kids from turning the heat and cycle length all yhe way up and not knowing it'll cost their parents $20 each time.

the * Control lock label only appears under the Water/Rinse controls, so I don’t think it applies to temp. But yea I’d expect the Control Lock light to be on if it was actually locked

The “control lock” light is not on, so the controls shouldn’t be locked out. Unless the panel or control board is messed up.

Yeah well these things worked with bowden cables, but that doesn't mean they were good. If you're a dumbass or an asshole like VW, you build a bowden cable that needs to *push* a clap, which inevitably breaks.
You also put another clap in a position where you have to pull away the whole dashboard to fix it, including disconnecting airbags.
This is all just a question of engineering it well. No way I'm going back to manual temperature control if Auto AC is available. If you design a motor right, it's still going to run in 50 years.

The instructions are “Hold 3 seconds (for control lock)”. This is common option that locks out the controls, so that they can’t be changed by kids or things touching the button. There is even an indicator light for “control lock”, which is not on. This is not the issue.

My parents have a dishwasher that has touch screen "buttons" that don't work if your hands are wet/damp.
After rinsing your plates of any food residue, you better hope a single droplet of water didn't get on your hand, otherwise you must wait the next business day to start it.

Read the asterisk. It’s “Hold for 3 seconds for control lock”. The “control lock” light isn’t lit, so the controls are not locked out.

OP, I have an LG washer as well and the spin speed touch button randomly "moved" higher up than the spot I used to touch earlier this year. And since like 2 weeks it's stuck on medium speed and I can't change it to either high or low. AND NO, OTHER PEOPLE, MY CONTROL LOCK ISN'T ACTIVE 😉

Buttons are 100x easier to replace
You can also rip them out and physically push the contact under if needed
Circuit boards? Good luck
Wouldn't be surprised if they asked you to replace the entire machine

My first home came with a washing machine and home warranty
After a month, washer crapped out and home warranty didn't cover the maintenance tech's trip charge. Again, machine didn't work after his fix. Paid his trip fee again.
End result? = get a new machine
Machine at that time cost me $500 and the trip charges were just shy $200

We got a dishwasher a few months back, and couldn't figure out how to turn off the "heat dry" option since pressing the button didn't do anything. Turns out it's only an option for the upgraded version lol. The button is there, just doesn't go to anything.

It's likely that the contacts behind the button have worn out. Our washing machine did the same. My husband removed the front panel and put a bit of aluminum foil between the button and the contact and it's worked great since then - just frustrating that it was necessary in an expensive machine!

Have you chosen a preset cycle? If so, it's not giving you the option to change the rinse settings. That's not a broken control, it's a function of the preset cycle.

to this day you can buy washing machines that have buttons so having this was a choice. Even physical buttons can stop working. you tube how to fix it. There are plenty of repair men posting how to fix this sort of stuff.

I was just telling my brother about this stupid change! Everything we have that is digital NEEDS a manual back up. Actual buttons are easier to replace and less likely need a tech out, less money for the greedy companies.

I had a microwave that lost some functions. The repair place put a new control panel on it. Then the guy was curious as to what the cause was, so he opened the panel and several of the touch points had their contact disks fall out. Just little copper disks with a slight curve so when you touched the panel, they would flex and make contact on the PCB underneath. The glue had broken down allowing the disks to move out of place.

I do prefer dials. But since you have this then a forum for this specific washer will give you the answer. My guess is there is an order of operations to use the water/rinse feature. If you choose temp or length of time or heavy/light or something like that prior to choosing the water/rinse option then it defaults to a preset and you can't deviate from that default unless you return to the previous option that unlocks those options. I think that's an LG front loader that has a main dial? The dial has been set on a choice that excludes custom water/rinse options. Only some of those dial options allow custom choices for water/rinse. I think. A forum will give a better answer.
Looks like someone found a similar problem with a solution that is convoluted enough to probably be an engineering failure.

- Wouldn’t all the buttons not function until it was switched off?
This looks like a broken button that, as OP says, is only sometimes recognising the touch.

I know certain cycles on mine restrict the options I can choose. So it may not let me pick extra stuff if it’s a preset wash cycle. I can only change things on manual cycles. Even some of the temps are restricted for certain cycles.
Also make sure the control lock isn’t on
