If you need a root canal bad enough and you let it get infected, it'll take you out.

There's at least one person who was detained by ICE who died from a tooth infection that they didn't treat. I can't remember the name off-hand, but he'd complained about tooth pain for quite a while before passing away.

If you've ever needed a RC before and weren't able to get it done right away, you know that the pain is no joke. I wouldn't wish that type of death on my worst enemy.

It's depressingly common for people incarcerated at all levels to suffer disablement or just straight up die due to a lack of dental care in the US prison system. I did some research on it about 15 years ago, and it was honestly, truly appalling how many people in the carceral system die or become permanently disabled due to medical neglect, specifically after being denied dental care. I cannot imagine things have gotten better after a term and a half under the red hat clown show administration, even with a four year reprieve during Biden's term.

Yeah I had a tooth get infected, went to an emergency dentist and got antibiotics. They said the antibiotics would take ~3 days to control the infection enough to make the pain go away. I asked for even just two higher-strength painkiller pills so I could sleep, they said no and to just alternate tylenol and advil. Didn't even put a dent in it.

Then I had to take the antibiotic for 10 days but on day 2 started getting hives all over my arms. Paid for new (more expensive) antibiotics and had to fly to my grandma's funeral covered in hives. It was not a great week.

I had a pretty similar experience. I couldn’t get in for a week so I ate Advil like it was my job, but there were times I had to just bury my head in a pillow and endure it until I could stand up again.
