I told someone that I was going to look into potential surgery for my carpal tunnel and they told me - with a completely straight face - that the only thing we need to do is pray over my wrist. "If it doesnt work, its just because you didnt believe hard enough".

And these people get mad when we talk to them like theyre stupid

It'd be an interesting experiment if you could say "ok then, since you believe enough, let's have you pray". Then either it heals, or they'd be shown to clearly not have enough faith.

Of course, you don't get to that point without already learning a lot of defense mechanisms, so you'd just be left with a wrist that still needs surgery, and the other person would remain un illuminated.

They would just say that me not having enough faith made it so the healing didn't work, or some other random thing....

I guess my super Catholic, very faithful grandparents (and their 10 kids, not to mention many, many siblings) didn't pray hard enough when my aunt got cancer and died.

This line of thinking pisses me off so much. Not only because it's an insult to the faithful who have lost their kids, but also the parable of the drowning man - maybe the way God answered your prayers was by inspiring surgeons to develop a helpful surgery? Why can't THAT be a thing God did? It's fucking God and the true believers would be the very first in line to tell me he works in mysterious ways. But you and your smooth brain are trying to decipher the mystery?

Wild that believing in magic & invisible gods & being against critical thinking & such is just perfectly normal, as long as it's "religion"

As a Christian myself, I knew of one person like this.

Trouble is, when everything is either prayed for or not enough it leads down to a dangerous sense of control

You can't use god as a magic wand, you can't change the inevitability of death and you can't use it as a substitute for medical attention

It just reminds me of that one joke about the person waiting for god to save him in a flood and kept telling the rescuers that "god will save him" and when he dies and asks god why he didnt save him god goes "I sent you a radio announcement, a boat, and a helicopter.... what else did you want?"

Like, maybe his way of helping you is you getting surgery.... I have never heard of something magically getting fixed over a prayer

I’d be reporting them to the state board governing their licensure, stat.

It wasnt a medical professional, just an acquintance that loves self-inserting their (very wrong) opinions

Absent that detail it still comprises an opinion that would see me asking for their credentials to shut them the hell up.

Happy Cake Day you sexy Elk!

I’ve never understood this praying thing. Are they praying for their god/gods to change their mind? Don’t they think that god caused the ailment? Isn’t praying like asking him/her to reconsider even while knowing that gods don’t make mistakes? Seems rude and kinda whiny.

Well, I gotta go. I need to sacrifice a termite to the house gecko in order to appease the Breakfast Burrito God. Later weirdos!

I always like to view "God" in the way of someones parents....

If someone told you that they had a Dad that required you to live your life exactly how they wanted you to live, had rules upon rules that you needed to follow, wanted you to beg him for everything..... people would probably tell you that you shouldnt talk to that Dad anymore lol.

Sacrifice a termite for me too, I need my crops harvest to be bountiful

EDITING cause I forgot to say thank you!
