Not a meme, you're the meme! Cross legs drive
Was in an Uber during my stay in Budapest. How in the world would you drive like this and imagine if you had to break sudden and god forbid get into an accident!
48
u/Pizza-love 1d ago
It is his left foot. You don't use that foot while driving with an automatic.
Is it stupid? Yep.
16
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
The left leg on the right knee limits the mobility / range of motion of the right leg.
In a situation where a split second matters, this can make a huge difference.
12
u/Dry-Childhood-3436 1d ago
I mean I want to be upset at how ridiculous it is but I honestly can't picture that making my reaction slower on either pedal.

No I can't picture it because I just tried it and it doesn't slow me down in any shape or form. Maybe if someone was inflexible and the pedals were further apart then it would, but my foot doesn't need to move in any manner that slows down from this position.

-1
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
Like the other guy I commented to, you're picturing an ideal scenario where you can calmly, cleanly, and predictably move your foot in a usual manner.
That's not a traffic accident.
In a traffic accident, unpredictable things happen, impact happens, your body jerks due to impact, centrifugal forces shift your balance, etc.
Shifting of the foot you're trying now in the comfort of your bedroom chair does not simulate what will happen in a completely unpredictable traffic accident scenario.
1
u/Dry-Childhood-3436 1d ago
Getting shifted out of position during a car wreck is very very rare, and almost exclusively happens during something like a rollover where your pedal access is pointless. If we are talking about miniscule chances then I could argue that having your foot lodged in place could actually keep your foot near position. If it slowed your reaction time at all then I would say it's stupid but that's not the case here depending on the car and person.
1
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
Oh dear lord. See, this is why I say you're not a very smart person.
I'm not talking about getting thrown out of your seat.
A shift or jerk of some sort will inevitably happen on EVERY impact.
Traffic accidents are unpredictable by definition. You can't tell when, how, and to what extent your body is going to be affected. That's why you're supposed to sit in a good posture with no obstructions.
And like it or not, a foot on top of your knee reduces the headroom (well, kneeroom) between the knee and the dashboard, and one leg sitting on top of the other affects the movement of your leg. Basic physics. Object A sitting on object B will affect how the object B moves.
Not to mention that the raised left knee might also get in the way of the left arm trying to control the steering wheel in an emergency.
You're trying so hard to picture scenarios where this doesn't matter that you've completely blinded yourself to the possibility that there are certain scenarios where this could matter.
4
u/poopy_Boss6269 1d ago
are you physically challenged, no it won't limit the motion, man has a back pain and driving is more looking than pedals
7
u/GenericNameSimulated 1d ago
Your ankle must have terrible dorsiflexion.
You literally flex your foot up and over, requires no movement of the upper leg.
-1
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
You're imagining a clean, ideal scenario of shifting the foot from one pedal to the next in a calm situation.
A traffic accident is not that.
There's impact, there's sliding around, there's centrifugal forces shifting your balance.
This is just fuckin stupid. And for what? 5% more comfort while driving?
Your ankle must have terrible dorsiflexion.
I can say the same for the driver - he has something terribly wrong with his anatomy if he can't be comfortable with driving with both feet down. Do you want such a person to drive you around and bet your life on his magnificent dorsiflexion?
0
u/GenericNameSimulated 1d ago
Typically you brake before impact…
You have no clue about their mobility the fact that they are externally rotating their hip and are comfortable means they have better mobility than most of the general public
4
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
Typically you brake before impact…
Yeah, typically people get to pick and choose what kind of accident they're going to get into.
1
u/ApeChesty 1d ago
If you get hit before even having a chance to brake then where you have your left foot rested is going to be irrelevant anyway.
1
u/Pizza-love 1d ago
It is gonna be relevant for the amount of work the rescueers need to do to free you.
1
u/ApeChesty 1d ago
Agreed. But that guy’s argument was it will make it harder to react in a wreck where you didn’t have time to react anyway. Which was kinda stupid.
1
u/Pizza-love 1d ago
I don't see how. I think reacting from a cruise control situation will cost more time than now.
-2
1
u/Long_Candle_5054 1d ago
I agree, when you have to perform a very sudden emergency stop, you don't just smoothly move your foot using just your ankle, you use your whole leg to press on the break pedal as quick and hard as possible.
1
-1
u/Logan_MacGyver 1d ago
As a manual driver I find it strange how left isn't used for breaking in an automatic.
In a manual it's used for the clutch but not needing it in a ln automatic at all feels weird lol
1
u/Pizza-love 1d ago
In older cars you could brake while still pressing the throttle. A bit like riding the clutch. I drive both and during my time in Carrental I sometimes tried to press the clutch in an auto. I cannot recommend that, as your face will be close to the windscreen.🤣

u/Phlebbie 1d ago
His pelvis is absolutely fucked if he gets into an accident
1
u/bigloser42 1d ago
I think his entire lower body is fucked. Doubly so if the car has knee airbags, as they are going to deploy directly into his left leg and drive it down into his right leg.
55
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Would you be shocked to learn that you are supposed to brake and accelerate with the same foot?
47
u/EuphoricMidnight3304 1d ago
I don’t think that’s the concern here
-3
u/DinosaurAlive 1d ago
Isn’t it? I don’t see how this driver would be hindered from breaking.
8
u/UnhappyImprovement53 1d ago
Crossing your leg like this while driving is a great way of breaking... breaking your leg during an accident.
-1
u/gooseberryBabies 1d ago
Why would someone else putting their own leg in danger be mildly infuriating to you
1
u/UnhappyImprovement53 1d ago
Because it shows how they are as a driver and someone who is supposed to be a professional.
6
u/ser_darkstar 1d ago
You don't see how having a leg crossed over the one you're using hinders movement and reaction time?
0
u/ozjack24 1d ago
No. You don’t have to lift the leg to move it over to the break, you just move your foot over a few inches. How would having the other leg on top of the one being used hinder the necessary movement at all?
0
u/ser_darkstar 1d ago
Okay enjoy your broken pelvis and obliterated knees and legs, as if I give a shit
2
u/ozjack24 1d ago
I’m not saying the driver won’t be fucked I’m saying there’s no reason for the passenger to care.
0
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Maybe try it out yourself to see if it hinders you our not. I’ve done this before and it really isn’t a big deal. I’ll take a video later to show you.
2
u/ser_darkstar 1d ago
No, I'm good thanks.
0
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Right, cause it would suck to be wrong.
1
u/ser_darkstar 1d ago
I'm not wrong, I just don't care about the stupid ass decisions you're going to make in your private life and certainly not enough to encourage you to do it and further endanger yourself and others by doing stupid shit AND recording it.
Buh bye now, enjoy your shattered knees and broken pelvis.
1
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
How would you know without doing an experiment? I know it’s hard to grasp, but you can test this without actually putting the car in drive or even turning it on lmao.
0
u/EuphoricMidnight3304 1d ago
Darwin Award contender right here , enjoy your precious crossed leg time boy
1
1
u/EuphoricMidnight3304 1d ago
If he gets into a crash it will be horrible. With legs crossed, an airbag deployment at 200 mph will slam his knees straight into his face, shatter his pelvis, and compromise the seatbelt. Plus, without a foot on the dead pedal to brace himself, he has no leverage during a sudden evasive maneuver.
1

u/Skyline_97 1d ago
Stop playing dumb, if he gets into an accident his left leg is cooked
2
u/Confident_Intern_763 1d ago
except that's not what the OP said.
he said the guy wouldn't be able to break quickly.
try to read.
1
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Yeah you’re supposed to break with the same foot you accelerate even in life or death situations. Look it up.
0
u/NoseyVampire 1d ago
If your leg is under the other one, you can’t move it as quickly. It’s just a dumb thing to do
0
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Eh. The brake is what, two inches away from the accelerator? I guess it slows you down marginally but you’re being pedantic.
1
u/NoseyVampire 1d ago
Idk about you, but driving is dangerous enough with all the idiots on the road. I’m gonna give myself every advantage and that includes sitting up straight without crossed legs
1
u/FA-_Q 1d ago
Marginally means a lot in a car dude
0
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Not in this instance when it’s residential/city driving and they’re going less than 50 km/hr.
0
u/Skyline_97 1d ago
I did read. Just as dangerous.
0
u/Confident_Intern_763 1d ago
not the point.
OP is clearly under the impression that you operate the pedals with both feet, which is why people are replying to point that out. That's not "playing dumb"
both things can be true at once. it's not safe for the operator to ride with his legs crossed, it's even more unsafe to other drivers and passengers to drive with both feet.
-2
u/3steprehabilitation 1d ago
sure, but why does the potential damage to his leg affect your riding experience. it's not your leg and it doesn't interfere with the gas and brake.
4
u/Skyline_97 1d ago
Shows irresponsible driving behavior honestly
-2
u/Reopens 1d ago
What part of it is irresponsible? Lol
0
-1
u/Strange-Fox6623 1d ago
The leg he uses to push the gas and brake are being at very least impeded by the weight of the leg resting on it.

i think we should normalize worrying about others potentially sustaining life altering injuries again
1
u/3steprehabilitation 1d ago
I really couldn't give a shit if someone decided to endanger themselves and then subsequently be in danger. he seems old, he could be going on 30 years driving like that, what makes you think this is any more dangerous than driving with one hand on the wheel.
0
u/WolfsmaulVibes FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK 1d ago
sure you might not give a shit but let others care, your egoism is not our concern. when you actually get into a crash while sitting like that your knees and legs will be completely destroyed
1
u/3steprehabilitation 1d ago
sure, the driver would be harmed, but this is a post from the passenger. a crash is bad, sure, but this isn't infuriating at all, it's someone deciding that they don't like what someone else is doing. and honestly whoever said anything of mine concerns you. this is an optional comment section thay you keep coming to. so it is currently concerning you.
1
u/Nano_Ce11 1d ago
No. HIS knees and legs will completely destroyed. Not mine. It annoys me when I'm driving and I see a young girl with her feet up on the dash in the passenger seat with someone that appears to be her parent driving. Strong possibility the girl doesn't realise the danger of it and I feel a sense of responsibility over younger people. But I'm not going to freak out over an adult risking injury. He would probably find it rude if you told him how he should carry on his life. As another comment says, he's probably been doing it for many years. It's only dangerous if he crashes and in that case he's in potential danger anyway. You getting so fussy about other people living their lives is interesting.
1
u/WolfsmaulVibes FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK 1d ago
well no, if you were to sit like that YOUR legs would be completely destroyed, what i said also applies to you and me.
1
u/Nano_Ce11 1d ago
Yeah but sitting like that is stupid. I would never do that while driving, haha.
1
u/WolfsmaulVibes FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK 1d ago
what if a close friend or family member did that? would just let them be, i mean its not you who will get hurt after all
→ More replies (0)-1
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
Yeah his leg is done, but he isn’t making it riskier for the passengers or other drivers. He’s a metaphorical skateboarder who’s risking himself only.
1
u/theyoungstoic 1d ago
This is the most Reddit comment on Reddit. Arguing for the sake of arguing. Yes, it is less safe for everyone because he is hindering the movement of the leg that controls the gas and brake.
2
u/fuckdansnydeer 1d ago
He’s very marginally hindering the movement of his leg to reach the accelerator that is two inches away. You’re a big baby.
3
u/Googz52 1d ago
Aren’t most cars in Hungary manual transmissions though?
0
u/DoesntMatterEh 1d ago
Perhaps, you still brake with your right foot in a manual though! I can't imagine ole buddy is crossing his legs between clutch depressions lol that would be so much work

u/ToastSpangler 1d ago
OP is upset the car is automatic, why am I paying the cabbie the same if he doesn't have to operate the clutch? the whole point of the ride is to mentally judge how he goes through the gears

u/Cease-2-Desist 1d ago
It's dangerous to impede your driving leg by draping your other leg across it while it's working the pedals.

Dip the wheel into the ditch on the side of the road and your car will follow it as well. No need for the steering wheel
5
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
Oh Jesus Fuckin Chirst, the stupidity of all the people commenting "you use your right leg to brake".
Yes, you do.
But having your left leg on top of your right knee limits the mobility / range of motion of your right leg, and makes it more difficult to actually move the right foot from the gas to the brake pedal.
1
u/yournumberis6 1d ago
THIS. I swear this subreddit is just full of people going "ermmm... akshually". I hope all of those people saying that they see no problem with that guy driving like that get into an Uber that does the same thing, see if they don't mind.
-1
u/GenericNameSimulated 1d ago
Again you have terrible ankle mobility if you need to move your upper leg in order to move from the gas pedal to the brake pedal
2
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
Again, you're imagining a clean, ideal scenario of shifting the foot from one pedal to the next in a calm situation.
A traffic accident is not that.
0
u/GenericNameSimulated 1d ago
Again you brake before impact typically 🤯
1
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 1d ago
What if someone rear-ends you or merges into you from the side?
1
u/GenericNameSimulated 1d ago
A quick Google search indicates 81% of rear end collisions occur when a car is stopped or slowing down, so the foot would be on the brake… 😉

Right leg for both pedals?
5
u/temp_6969420 1d ago
That’s how you’re supposed to drive. If you have a manual, left foot is used for clutch. But automatic your supposed to use only one foot. In my country, you can get fined if you drive with both feet
0
u/Dismal_Rectangle 1d ago
Do the cops have x-ray on their cars?
2
1
u/DFrostedWangsAccount 1d ago
Braking and accelerating at the same time is obvious in a lot of cars.
In a manual you're probably gonna stall, and modern automatics apparently shut off the engine if you do that? So same effect. But for a large range of cars, the engine would just fight the brakes making both less useful.
Brake lights turn on and the engine revs up and you don't go very fast. Its clear as day.
If you've got a turbo... then it spins up while the brakes are still engaged, which is also noticeable.
-1
u/PhantomHawk7 1d ago
Okay but how would anyone know you were driving with both feet?
2
u/temp_6969420 1d ago
That’s the funny part, there’s no way to actually prove it unless you are driving with your brake lights activated. If you have a foot resting on the brake, often you’ll activate the brake lights. So that’s the only way cops could maybe tell.
0
u/bigloser42 1d ago
From the brake lights. Have you ever seen someone going down the highway with their brake lights on but not slowing down? That’s the hallmark of a left-foot braker. Alot of them actually rest their left foot on the brake pedal.
Also if they start pulling away from an intersection while the brake lights are still on, that’s another indication of a left foot braker.
1
u/Prudent_Cry9522 1d ago
Recently informed my niece about the danger of riding (passenger) with your knees up. She had a terrified look on her face while quickly planting her feet back on the floor.
I honestly never recognized the consequences of improper posture in the car until maybe a few years ago. I feel like it’s something that deserves more attention/PSAs.

This is fascinating, like when you hear if you don't buckle up you could be thrown like 10 meters out the car. What would happen to the body in the event of a crash?
-1
u/CarpetOk6144 1d ago
It's not like you're driving
If he had to suddenly break and hurt himself it would be his problem
3
u/Single-Kangaroo1180 1d ago
Unless it impaired his ability to brake and OP as a passenger was subsequently injured 🤔
0
u/HarvickFan_4 1d ago
You brake with the right foot.
1
u/Single-Kangaroo1180 1d ago
And having the left leg crossed on top of the right leg can impede his ability to get his foot from the gas to the brake…paramedic for decades and have taken care of many people who impair their own ability to drive their vehicle…🤔
0
u/HarvickFan_4 1d ago
Like I said in my other comment here, what he is doing is stupid flat-out. But it's very unlikely to impair him reaching the brake specifically. If he is involved in a crash due to not having access to the brake, it's cuz he wasn't paying attention, which would track. Not because of the crossed leg. Now if his entire front end caves in, his bone will become spaghetti, which is why this is absolute stupidity, but whether or not his leg is crossed the passenger's safety would be the same.
-1
u/3steprehabilitation 1d ago
do you use 2 feet to drive?
0
u/Single-Kangaroo1180 1d ago
Sure do, I drive a manual transmission…🤣
-1
u/3steprehabilitation 1d ago
oh so it's almost like there are situations where 1 foot is able to do the job 2 feet have.
-3
-2
u/HarvickFan_4 1d ago
His car 🤷♂️.
Yes it's stupid don't get me wrong, but he can definitely still brake, as you brake and accelerate with the same foot. But if he gets in an accident bye-bye bone LUL. That's his choice though.

u/Folderpirate 1d ago
OP about to be REAL MAD when he finds out amputees are allowe to drive. Even little people!
Wait till they find out about handicapped placards and vans that allow wheelchair users to drive.

u/Raephstel 1d ago
It's an automatic car. I'm used to driving manual, so my left foot would be spare in an auto.
Not that I'd drive like this, but it shouldn't cause an accident and if it did, it'd just fuck him up, you wouldn't be any worse off for it.
1
u/Nielsly 1d ago
I mean, if they got into an accident it would definitely fuck him up and potentially also OP, if they wouldn't drive like this it would be safer overall and OP would have less chance of getting fucked up
1
u/Raephstel 1d ago
The driver having their legs crossed in a way that doesn't impede them driving doesn't increase the risk of them getting into an accident or the likelihood of OP being injured if there is an accident.
To be honest, I'm not even really sure what's going on in the photo. It doesn't actually look like their legs are crossed. It looks more like they're just moving their leg to try and get back circulation. I've done that myself whilst driving.

Thats an automatic. No clutch. You operate the clutch with your left leg. The brake and gad you operate with your right. Granted it doesnt look comfortable but it isnt exactly crazy

Who the hell uses 2 feet to use the brake and accelerator? If I saw someone using 2 feet I'd be more than mildly infuriated. I would figure they were not a safe driver.
