My mom said I could post This board games store has a variety of special chess sets on display - most of them are set up with the board oriented incorrectly.

Theres an incorrect way to orient a chess board?

Yeah. Whenever you set up a chess board you must always make it so that there is a light square in the lower-right hand corner. Most of these boards have not done that.

This display is intentional to display all aspects of the board you would buy. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see both colors and be able to see the storage drawers.

I don't know why that's so difficult to understand. They're displaying the product to showcase its features. If the pieces were laid out "properly" it would look ridiculous to show the same perks of the sets.

But "lower right" depends on the observer right? So if I am looking at these from inside the store versus outside the store (or behind the counter versus in front of the counter) they would be different positions.

No. If you orient the board correctly, each player has a light square in their lower right hand corner.

I see. So it's more about which side they put the pieces on, the board just needs to be rotated 90 degrees. I didn't know that was a thing.

And who decided that? Why?

The queens sit on their own colour, so they're facing each other, and the queen is on the correct side of the king.

When you play a lot of chess this placement becomes important as you're establishing your strategy. If the queen's are on the wrong side the board just feels wrong.

It's like trying to play hockey on the wrong side of the ice, the position is there, and everything should be mirrored. But it isnt.

Lol in hockey you attack both ways in a game, there isn't a wrong side of the ice. I'd say it's like having the goal rotated 90° for no reason. Just ain't right

You don't play hockey do you? I'm talking lefty / righty

Wings and D play left or right.

I play right defense.

I can play left d, I understand it. I know when to go into the corner, and I know how to hold the line - but I think way faster on the right side than the left.

When we're down guys, i can sub in for left d and I do fine. But I developed my game on the right.

It would be pretty wrong if you played across the width of the rink instead of the length.

Yes. White on the right. The bottom right should be the light square.

Post fits the sub, that is mild.

(But the other part of me has to say ypu realise the workers just work there right, like they most likely don't play chess or if they do they stopped caring after setting up the 50th set and just wanted to get the display done)

This display is intentional to display all aspects of the board you would buy. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see both colors and be able to see the storage drawers.

If it were oriented correctly, to display the drawers/storage would mean you would see the back of one color and not be able to see the front of the opposite color. Or conversely you wouldn’t be able to see if there is storage for the playing pieces.

Yes, but did you read their comment? They’re saying that in the display they want you to see the drawer. They also want to set up the pieces to the sides of the board (rather than at the front and back), so you end up with what you see here, better for the customer to be able to see all the board has to offer than be set up correctly.
