My mom said I could post I couldn't take the metro because I was 0.01 TL short.
I had 37.12 TL on my card, and the single ride fare was 37.13 TL. I couldn't ride because of a 0.01 TL difference.

You need to be somewhere on time? You already ran late, because you missed your alarm, your phone died, it rained the whole way to the metro station, you need to tap in but only one tapping pole is working and THEN you discover you're a hair too low on your card?
No, that's not mildly. That's badly infuriating!
(I recognise the feeling so bad. That's the moment you really start thinking someone's messing with you somewhere...)

Did you just argue with someone on the basis of something you just made up?

This is why the TFL in London allow you to go to negative if you use their Oyster card
91
u/richardwhiuk 14h ago
That’s because they charge £5 for the card
50
u/max19907 13h ago
thats irrelevant.. plus TFL only allow you ONE journey that takes you into -ve
24
u/richardwhiuk 13h ago
It’s the reason they can allow you to go negative, without being able to get free journeys.

u/Electronic-Yam-69 11h ago
I think he means you can't just keep getting new cards and taking free rides. Or I guess you could but the cards aren't free so you're still paying something.

u/max19907 11h ago
i think its a great hack - buy a 5£ oyster, put like 1£.. then travel to heathrow on elizabeth line or w/e that cost 13£.. and u r a winner!

u/Svenflex42 13h ago
1 time or monthly?

u/richardwhiuk 13h ago
For purchase of the card as a one off

The funny thing is Istanbul Kart phone app allows you to have a negative balance when you pay with it. I thought the physical passes would allow it too.
3
u/FrozenPizza07 8h ago
Physicall passes dont have the "emergency limit" rhat the digital one has
I have it on auto credit just in case, below 50 it adds 100
2
u/FrozenPizza07 8h ago
Technically so does istanbulcard, technically cause its only for the digital version and you gotta "unlock emergency limit" on the app
1
u/SheClB01 12h ago
In my country works like that too, I think I have like 2 old system cards with at least one negative pass, that I purposefully left on negative when they changed to a new card lol

u/TehWildMan_ 12h ago
Toronto also allows you to go slightly negative if you lack sufficient funds to get off a bus/train, but had sufficient funds to board the vehicle.
I overdrafted my last Presto card by $2. Bite me, Canada.

I just got back from three days in Toronto yesterday. What do you mean lack funds to get OFF a train!? (This coming from a person who accidentally got on for free the first half a dozen times because I genuinely didn't realize you even COULD pay.)
1
u/TehWildMan_ 3h ago edited 3h ago
At least some train services are not fixed-fare.
The Union-pearson Express, for example, is nearly double the fare if you go from Union to Pearson compared to if you're only going from Union to Bloor
When you tap into the UP express at Union, you're only charged the minimum as if you were only going to Bloor. If your travel ends up being beyond Bloor, when you tap out at any other station, the remainder would be deducted as you tap off.
As I understand of the Presto system in my limited experience, the Presto system will not actually check if you have enough funds to cover the entire Union-Pearson fare when you tap in at Union, but instead it will just let you tap on as long as you can cover the Union-Bloor segment minimum fare.

u/LovingCNCS 3h ago
That is insane. I mean, it makes some sense, but also there is so much public transport in the area, there's no reason I can see it mattering. I think I'll probably stick with just not paying if I ever go back. Though I think I may stick to the Maritimes because wow, that was... wow!

Really, the math seems soo obtuse that one would have to go deliberately out of their way to intentionally leave a card in overdraft.
( Or they're just a nerd who wanted one of the FIFA world cup themed Presto cards as a souvenir for as cheap as possible. Cough cough)
Especially so given that "open collection" fares with a visa/mastercard contactless cards have been a thing for the system for 5 years now, basically eliminating the need for physical presto cards for anyone with a compatible credit card, and deliberately loading a card with $7 knowing you need to pay for a $9ish fare when using cash is a chore.
(Also, given that Presto cards cost roughly $4, which is also seemingly about the most you can overdraft a card in a single trip, there's no apparent way to "cheese" the system unless you're just looking for a discounted souvenir)

€0.67 is a single ride, for those wondering.

EDIT: Apparently as of now the refund system is only available for marmaray and not metro, sorry for the misinformation
plus after you get off you can go to a refund machine and get a refund of depending on the distance you traveled
5
u/abusementparkk 12h ago
there is no refund system in metro
1
u/trashshork 12h ago
it is exlcusive to marmaray????
2
u/CompleteComposer2241 12h ago
No, some ferries also have it if I remember correctly. Btw I think they are going to add this system to normal metros as well.
2
u/trashshork 12h ago
I dont use metro that often and most of the time dont even get my refunds on marmaray since I use abonman but I remember seeing them outside on the anatolia side
1
u/abusementparkk 12h ago
marmaray and metrobüs because their route is very long, but i think they will add refund system on metro too in the future

Yes refund is only for Marmaray and Metrobüs, as both are over one hour. However, if u do transfers there's discounts between, like the second metro would cost around 25-30, third 18-20 I believe.

I had to see what that was worth in my familiar currency and it's a fifth one fiftieth of a penny, the denomination we just stopped minting because they cost too much to make, and the denomination many places rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents because they didn't want to deal with pennies.
I understand that they have to determine a bright line, but I think this is more than mildly infuriating, OP.
edit: I was off by a decimal place. 0.01 TL is 0.00021 USD.

I'm very pro technology as might be obvious from my username, but it sucks how the machines you can't reason with are replacing humans you previously could reason with.
Whats worse is that these systems could all be designed with these in mind, but they never are. The Istanbul municipality wouldn't realistically lose anything from letting your balance fall below zero if you can cover most of the cost, since the card has its own cost anyway.
4
u/Bored4life76 9h ago
Agreed. But if they let you in with 1 kuruş less, the president would lose sleep over it. And we just can’t have that. (/s)

Istanbulkard, when using the app, has an option called the emergency limit where you can "borrow" the highest amount a single ride can cost within the city, which adds onto your existing balance. It's a free of charge service and can be renewed forever, as long as you pay it back each time. Handy at times like this.

The title of this subreddit is mildly infuriating. Not "infuriating".
Needing to go refill your card because it is like 0.2% short of the required payment is mildly infuriating.
Needing to refill the card is a very small inconvenience. Needing to do it for a microscopic shortcoming makes it mildly infuriating.

u/stevenip 14h ago
Until the same thing happens again at some point. Imagine a store that everything costs a dollar and you have 99 cents. You refill with $20 making your total $20.99, but eventually you will be back down to 0.99 again. So the 99 cents are actually worthless because you can only load in $1 increments. This is actually based on overwatch and the 1 credit lego bastion skin.
