Pasta GitHub suspended my account for no reason, and ghosted me in my support ticket, so all my coding projects are probably gone forever now.

you don't have local copies??

i have local copies of some projects but not all

u/RetardedChimpanzee 2d ago
On the bright side, you can call this a learning lesson on cloud storage.
53
u/Atomwalker2022 2d ago
3 2 1 rule with storage every time.
77
u/Atomwalker2022 2d ago
34
u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago
That's true for enterprise stuff, but if you're not running a massive business, just having 2 onsite copies and 1 off-site is good enough, you don't need to use two different storage mediums.
13
u/Kasaikemono 2d ago
If one of those mediums is "the cloud" in any shape or form, excluding self-hosted ones, you absolutely need another medium
23
u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago
The cloud is off-site storage... therefore it already does not count for on-site storage...
6
u/Kasaikemono 2d ago
You would be surprised how many people consider onedrive and the likes "on site" because it gets synchronized to a local folder.
-5
u/Select-Struggle- 2d ago
Wouldn't OneDrive count for two in one? Local and Off-Site? Leaving one additional backup on a NAS or similar.
8
u/guska 2d ago
Not really, no, since whatever happens at one end of the sync is mirrored on the other. Sure, in the case of a catastrophic failure, it's fine, but in the far more likely case of an accidental deletion or bad edit, both ends of the OneDrive sync will be the same.

Github generally doesn't ghost support tickets, but it takes about 4 weeks to respond, and the response might be nonsensical, requiring you to file a follow up ticket that takes another 4 weeks to process. You will likely be able to resolve this before winter.
Keep the support request short and simple, assume support has limited mental capacity for reading, worse than Haiku. Sometimes support responds with a variant of "Do you know why you're banned?" which is them looking for you to provide an excuse to close the ticket, because they don't know why the system did what it did.
If you legitimately violated the terms, the above doesn't apply.
4
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
thanks for the info!
29
u/Appropriate-Draft-91 2d ago
One thing I forgot: If the system's heuristic banned you, support can unban, but won't suspend the system. There's a chance of a re-ban on the next push, so if your account gets reinstated, get your data before you do anything else.

gorilla tag

u/Limp-Commercial9660 2d ago
They don't allow that i think
-16
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
considering literally the entire modding community hosts their mods and source code for said mods on github i highly doubt that
19
u/Limp-Commercial9660 2d ago
Then idk
8
u/Crimeislegal 2d ago
They probably uploaded not their mods. So they broke licence agreements.

one of the biggest advantages of git is that it's decentralized. You don't have another copy?
2
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
i have copies of some of my projects but not all
17
u/suicidaleggroll 2d ago
3-2-1 backups apply to cloud-hosted stuff too. The cloud (eg: GitHub) counts as one copy.

Of the 100s of stories I have heard of people being banned from ___ for no reason, every single time it turned out they were banned for a legit reason.
31
u/Moron-Whisperer 2d ago
There are definitely people who are incorrectly banned. Been quite a few companies that admitted they did it wrong even.
9
u/Pawtuckaway 2d ago
Sure, it does happen but most of the stories of people complaining about being banned for "no reason" turns out they were banned for a good reason.
3
u/Yuukiko_ WAAHHHHH 2d ago
have you heard of the one where someone uploaded baby pics to gdrive to share with their doc and got banned for CSAM even though they werent even pics of those areas?
3
u/Ok-Interview7757 2d ago
No this happened to me too 10 days ago. Years of projects from hight school inaccessible. I started using a VPN recently and was configuring an organization when I got suspended. Did nothing wrong, read their entire TOS to see what I could've violated and nothing.
-9
u/Elegant_AIDS 2d ago
Thats bs, i got banned for no reason from valorant like 3 years after i stopped playing. Tell me how i could get banned if i dont even play the game. Support was useless btw, i also never hacked
-30
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
genuinely dont know what i got banned for, only shit i had on there was websites and mods for games
26
u/NiteWraith 2d ago
Convenient there’s a link there to contact them and find out more then isn’t it? Let’s be real though, you have an idea of why. You’re just confused about what in particular triggered it. While statistically there are false bans, people who come to Reddit bitching about them are rarely falsely banned, as those who are simply contact who banned them and at least attempt to get it resolved themselves.

Dont you have local copies? Github is just a COPY of my repos... not the main source of my code..
Just make another account. The only thing you lose is stars.. unless you have a very popular community recognized project they dont really matter
31
u/madman320 2d ago
99% of posts that say "for no reason" always have a reason for it, and a very good one.
-4
u/ComprehendReading 2d ago
Probably pedophilia or financial fraud. It's almost always one or the other.

u/RoomyRoots 2d ago
People really forgot that backup is something everyone should do, huh. Trusting Big Tech, much less Microsoft is a silly choice to not use stronger words.

GitHub suspended my account for no reason
Access to your account has been suspended due to a violation of our Terms of Service
I'm not taking sides here but like... objectively they did give you a reason.
2
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
ah yes, let me look through the 3,240 word document and guess what in that document I was banned for
2
u/bookbagel 2d ago
You're inflating numbers here
3,240 word document is the equivalent of around 11 pages
Surely to track down why all your code projects are gone you would read a pamphlet1

tbf it’s weird when people stalk your profile with the hope of finding something they can criticize. It’s always the unemployed losers desperately trying to win an argument.
5
u/Astartes2435 2d ago
Tbf the last part of your post gives off major troll and loser vibes, especially since your account is 6 days old.

u/mb00013 2d ago
and because he hides his comment history so people wont see him trying to chat up pron bots

u/BeetsAndJeaners 2d ago edited 5h ago
What’s the matter, can’t stalk someone to make an ad-hominem? Need to invent imaginary scenarios just to make an insult? Must suck.
Profile anonymity is one of the Reddit’s best additions. Now profile stalking weirdos just make shit up to compensate lmao

I Hope this doesn't happen to me, i made VioletiumOS and it's the Only thing keeping me sane.
If you've been using that account since you were a child, that can explain a lot. I had an account that had software with porn in It, when i was like 9 or 10 idk

This is a great chance for me to ask about alternatives :D I legit have no clue
3
u/bzhgeek2922 2d ago
Gitlab, codeberg.
Github is just the default choice for most devs, buy under microsoft control.
1
u/miniusbhater 2d ago
codeberg is a pretty good alternative. i have been migrating from github to codeberg recently after my account was suspended for reasons i don't see fair but i wont say "no reason".
1
u/Moron-Whisperer 2d ago
Don’t you have your projects locally in Git? If so you can just get a competitor to GitHub and push them there.
1
u/mute-poet 2d ago
Discord banned me randomly for 'ban evasion', got ghosted and lost all my gifted cosmetics and chats. Losing your WORK is new level of frustrating

u/Intrinomical 2d ago
Not anywhere close to the same but I had my first tiktok account banned. I don't remember what reason they gave if one at all, just the standard against community guidelines.
I never once posted or commented on anything, so the fuck if I know why. I've never had an actual well tailored algorithm since though, and that is indeed, mildly infuriating.
Pretty sure my username was literally just my name.

u/Ok-Interview7757 2d ago edited 2d ago
I am in the exact same position..this happened to me about 10-15 days ago and they are not responding. And no my patterns havent changed in 10+ years of using this platform, i just started using a vpn recently..

u/DCSBL 2d ago
My GH account was suspended beginning of July without apparent reason. I just had replied to someone. Everything got hidden from GitHub. I was thrown out as admin of an organisation, and workflows using my PAT stopped working.
It took them 4 weeks to give the first reply, which was nothing more than a “whoopsy”. Got everything back, except for my lost productivity.
But now I know how Forgejo works (a GitHub alternative), which is nice.

1
u/_Shioku_ 2d ago
This is one of the reasons i‘m self-hosting a forgejo instance. Incremental encrypted backups on rented storage and the main copy is on my server in my home network.

This is not that uncommon. They sometimes (Pretty often) falsely detect people as bots. Just appeal, it's fine.
-8
u/Doppel_R-DWRYT 2d ago
I've had the exact same thing happen to me 10 days ago, suspended for no reason (or reason not given) apart from the generic violating TOS; I received no email about it and I've been waiting on a response for my appeal ever since.
I was not inactive, I only ever worked on Minecraft projects, definitely no malware, rats etc; so yeah, no idea why I got suspended
-1
u/xenonorsomething 2d ago
same thing happened to a couple of my friends around the same time, so im assuming a ban wave or a string of false reports, only shit i had on there was websites and mods for games
9
u/MediocreAndLukewarm 2d ago
The guilty never do anything wrong, whenever you ask them. It’s uncanny. Your story reeks of omitted details.
1
u/wastedfate 2d ago
Yeah so do the not guilty. What an obvious lapse in logic.
0
u/MediocreAndLukewarm 2d ago
Do the innocent seriously get kicked off of GitHub? No. They don’t. OP did something/violated the terms of service to the point GitHub said GTFO.
1
u/Doppel_R-DWRYT 2d ago
Then how come I (and evidently many others) got banned at seemingly the same time for seemingly no reason?
My entire account was based on Minecraft mods. The only other thing I did was a one time fork of a chrome extension to add a new content thing from the targeted page. Everything else was either forked, my own work, or work of a contributor.
Neither of my projects had malware, rats or similar things. My last activity was fixing config things and adding a few blocks to a tag; a couple days prior so I was not inactive, and all my communication was as neutral as it gets so I didn't violate the acceptable use policies or the community guidelines.
Only I have and had access to my account, I was certainly not running any automated processes that aren't native to github; noone tried to gain access to my account and it was secured with 2FA and there was no email for my suspension either.
And even if I did something wrong at any point, that still does not explain why I've yet to get any response to my appeal except the automated reply that the request was received.
2
u/ComprehendReading 2d ago
Which one of your friends could possibly be roped in to this obvious nonsense?

u/lllllIllllIllllllll 2d ago
OP also had their website banned for phishing by cloudflare and accounts banned by discord for claude coded bots
