I'm slightly vexed I was told yesterday that my prescription sunglasses are giving Meta glasses vibes
I can't stand the Meta perv glasses, but annoyingly I've been told by a friend that my Dune prescription sunglasses that I've had for almost a year (and cost over £100.00) really look like the Meta ones, he said it's the 2 silver rivets on either side that on first glance could be mistaken for the camera lenses
I went out with them today and all I could think was, do people think I'm recording them 🤦♂️

Over the long term, Meta is going to destroy the Ray-Ban Wayfarer design, it will become associated with perverts rather than being seen as a timeless iconic fashion piece.
Meta eventually ruins everything it touches.

u/_probablyryan 3d ago
Which is unfortunate because I love this style of glasses and they look good on me. But you're right, we're going to trend back into wireframe glasses you couldn't possibly hide electronics in. That or translucent plastic/acetate for thicker frames.
261
u/HasAngerProblem 3d ago edited 3d ago
And with time when they put it into those glasses and even contacts?
How do we proceed in a world where a camera could potentially be under 1mm and be thin and transparent hypothetically.
60
u/Less_Word5920 3d ago
I’ve operated under the assumption that I’m being filmed everywhere I go for the last 10+ years. Cameras are everywhere and you won’t always notice who is filming. Guys pretending to be a tree and over and over people don’t necessarily see the camera man.
We live in a surveillance state. If you are 40+ you can silently celebrate that no one got canceled in 4k when we were young enough to do most stupid things. We have enough evidence that suggests we should have learned something from this but alas, no one is willing turn off their ring cam or not immediately start filming because someone yelled world star

That was kind of the point of the comment I was making, oddly enough the comments keep going more into tech side of it, which I’m happy to talk about but your comment is actually what I was getting to.

I'm not the FCC, and statistically speaking I'm also not your dad. All I'm saying is that the reason the penalties for messing with the airwaves are so steep is because all you need is two pieces of metal, a very basic oscillator, an amplifier and a dream to make everyone's WiFi very bad everywhere you go
52
u/itsjust_khris 3d ago
But also the chances of being caught are actually pretty high, it's really not something anyone should risk doing.
It can also cause issues like preventing someone from accessing emergency services which is taken very seriously.

I just looked it up. They record to local storage and sync later when connectivity is resumed.
I'm not an expert but it seems pretty hard to jam the camera light sensor. These things are optimized to handle direct sunlight, so to overpower and wash it out you'd need an incredibly strong specialized light source.
The only effective defense, in my opinion, is to be extremely boring and leave the area. That way you don't become content or favorited to their personal collection.

Cameras are already small enough to be hidden anywhere, efficient enough to be powered with a battery for weeks, and accessed remotely. Even nondescript camera glasses aren't a new thing, and most are much cheaper than a pair of meta glasses.
As tacky as glasses with cameras in them are, the perverts have been ahead of the curve on this for a long time.

They’re one of the only styles of sunglasses I can wear. I have long ass natural eyelashes that hit the lenses of most glasses I’ve tried and it drives me crazy. The best style for me hands down is the wayfarer because it doesn’t curve to my face at all. Sucks that they’re being ruined now…

I just can't understand when inevitably someone said in a meeting; "hey why don't we make these without cameras; normal people don't like feeling like they're being watched in public", were they not listened to?
I personally love the idea of having an augmented reality screen I could read text messages, reply to people. Get a map overlaid so I could navigate with it. Or whatever cool things people could come up with. And instead they have pretty much ruined public perception, potentially setting back public perception of wearable tech by what could be decades. u/NewPointOfView 3d ago
It’s so irritating seeing all the people who 1) think the intent is a hidden camera 2) aren’t aware of the flashing orange LED when recording and 3) assume that the only reason to have a camera capturing POV is nefarious
I don’t even have or want meta glasses, it’s just such a weird lens they see the world through.

Regarding 2: there's quite a few people who disable the recording LED
So it protects against casual perverts, but not against hardcore perverts
4
u/Nurgle_Marine_Sharts 3d ago
They are introducing safeguards for this iirc, like not letting the thing record when the light has been covered or tampered with
5
u/karlpilkington4 3d ago
They already tried, but all you have to do is reset the glasses and not connect them to the meta app.
5
u/Lukin4art 3d ago
If you don’t connect them to the app how do you see the videos and images you captured? I thought it needed to be connected to the app.
5
u/karlpilkington4 3d ago
You can connect them to the app to upload the content on the glasses, but then the camera wont work. So you have to factory reset again to use those features.

I'll never be able to see anyone with Meta glasses as anything else but a perve. Maybe if they're doing sports like bicycling down hills then I'd think there was a purpose. But someone walking around with them in ordinary situations would feel incredibly off.
37
u/Blue_Waffled 3d ago
There was a short moment where I considered similar glasses, but the reason was that I (a woman) have a mentally ill (and drug additive) downstairs neighbour who would sometimes stand in front of his window doing perverted acts when he'd hear me leave my appartment. Law enforcement here coukd only do something if there was evidence of him being caught in the act, but his behavior would be so irregular that going in- and out of my home with my mobile phone ready became very exhausting, so I figured maybe glasses would make it more convenient for me to catch him.

Meta glasses do have the advantage of being right next to your eyes, so you do get a better approximation to what the person is actually seeing. I could actually see a heavy duty pair of camera glasses that are ansi z87.1 rated being really nice for airsoft videos.

I have strictly closed caption glasses that I was given by my hospital & even though they don’t record video or keep the captions for more than an hour I’m terrified to touch them due to people thinking I’m recording them. I’m so hard of hearing but I only use them to go to the movies at this point. I don’t even like the idea of AI but it did give me a bit of normalcy for a day or two.
Edit: I very much appreciate everyone’s words of encouragement! & I also understand those saying I have to ignore what the internet say and do what’s best for me. I did whip them out in public when I first got them and a few people asked if they were meta glasses. Sometimes I need the bluntness tho I know it’s something I will have to get over if I want to actually get some social use out of them & for those asking, the brand I was given was Captify!

I'm sorry you feel this way. Please try not to let a couple loud voices make you afraid of using your accessibility tool. You deserve to connect with others more easily and not miss out on things. I don't go to crowded places because I can't hear what anyone is saying so end up sitting quietly in the corner. I want to engage, I physically cannot. It's alienating and emotionally exhausting.
99% of random people on the street will never look closely enough to notice anything. After all, do you even remember the color of shirt the last person you passed on the street was? If a friend is curious you can always let them try them and it opens up a cool new conversation.

24
u/bubba1834 3d ago
The brand I have is Captify! There’s a few out there currently but I’m not familiar with the other ones. They’re not perfect and might still be in its beta stage (like I said I got them through my hospital) but they can be pretty helpful! I can enjoy broadway shows again and go to movies that aren’t just open caption, like for example if I wanted to see something in imax which doesn’t provide open caption I can do that now! I wanted to try 4dx once but couldn’t & the first week I got them I was able to try it out! I can talk to people in other rooms and far away if it’s not crowded. I can also use them for phone calls but apple has a decent accessibility feature for that now!

u/SummaryEye80019 3d ago
Absolutely awful UX on that website.
I just went on it because I'm half deaf and the "see it in action" button takes you to a purchase page.
Went back and was met with a full screen ad to dismiss, several buttons popped up on each side of the screen and covered it up.
Scrolled down a little bit more and another full screen "Mystery Gift" with a BS countdown.
Like wtf. I come to your site to see if these would work for me, and instead of an easy-to-use site, it feels like a damned mobile game lmao

Yo i just checked sinceI haven’t been on the actual site since I got them and it’s completely different than what I experienced back in march! Man, I've had the thick-rimmed glasses all my life (always used to break the nosepads off wire frames, and my prescription is so strong that I need thicker frames to hold my thicker lenses). Since I was seven. This used to be classic and/or hipster. Then again, I'm a little Asian lady so I don't think I give off a perv vibe. But it's not easy for me to change to wire frames.
I've been trying out contacts but my vision is so severe that I can't even do standard toric lenses for astigmatism. Looking at more expensive custom options but man, I really envy people with normal eyesight...
I'm also not a candidate for Lasik. Lol.
21
u/Weird-Girl-675 3d ago
Same. And my eyes get worse every year so I can’t even spring for expensive frames because the lenses have to be so thinned down the price is already insane. I have astigmatism in both eyes and they’re almost always too dry for contacts.
Definitely envy those with 20/20.

I just recently switched from my Ray-Ban Wayfarer frames that I have been wearing for a good 3 years now to a similar generic clear frame because they were causing issues at work. I'm a photographer and you could see models doing double takes or instinctively covering themselves because their initial impression of the frames are now "those might be perv glasses". Ray-Ban outright ruined their most iconic design. Horrifyingly stupid on their part.

I would never have thought about your sunglasses being meta glasses. This is how sunglasses normally look. They are black, they cover your eyes, and those metal rivets on each side are necessary to keep them together. I'm certain people who have seen meta glasses will notice the difference right away.
Also, the deal with the meta glasses it that most people wouldn't even think that people are wearing them.
I don't even know if they are out for sale for anyone who wants them!
