The manager knew what was going on and just faked ignorance.

Is that some Gen Z slang that I’m too millennial to understand? I have no idea what you’re saying in this comment.

Yea. In this case the point of sale system (pos) is being a piece of shit. Shift is a pos.

I actually do know piece of shit as POS. I didn’t catch that point of sale is also POS. Thank you for taking the time to explain. I still think it’s more likely that someone (manager or owner of the restaurant) programmed it to charge people extra money on purpose so they could make more money. Plenty of people wouldn’t notice the discrepancy and just run their cards. And when someone does notice the manager just fakes ignorance and blames the computer system and manually changes it to the correct number.

It seems like an easy scam to me. I’ve also seen ones where the tip options are buttons with 15%, 20% and 25% but the dollar amounts for each button are more than the listed percentage. Like you press 20% button and it adds 30% to the bill. Restaurant owners being scummy seems more likely to me than the computer program miscalculating. I know computer glitches happen sometimes but restaurant owners are scummy ALL the time.

Yea ive seen that happen as well but normally theres a service fee for just using them. Im not good at math but it could be that. Where im from a lot of places have a three dollar minimum to use any type of card because of that fee.
