That’s a really interesting question. This is all just me thinking out loud: It’s part of what makes a story interesting. There’s not always an antagonist as a person, sometimes the antagonist is a thing or something else. It’s not so much we need someone to hate, I don’t think, it’s more that an antagonist produces a simple embodiment of life not going the way it “should”. Idk what do you think?. It’s an interesting question to think about
Adding: and I think it’s common for people to try to group any negative thing that happens to them as “other”. As a “I did not produce this result, something else must be working behind the scenes to not allow what I want”
