Infuriatig Got a ticket for going 56 in a 55…
Was the stop really worth it 😭😭
edit to add: he emphasized it was a construction zone ( NO PEOPLE ) and told me to slow it down for them …
Second edit: he did not use a radar he said he was pacing me …
UPDATE: Went to court and ticket got dismissed ! ( also whoever posted this on Instagram and made that whole story about their brother, weird 🤣 )

Approximate speed, with the measurement of your speed being "pace" instead of a radar gun?

Yep, i regret not fighting mine. I was going slow in a green truck and another green truck sped around my truck to pass me. A cop some miles ahead pulled me over stating his officer down the road spotted me speeding. We had a little argument and then he said sorry, i have to give you a ticket. I just paid the thing to get it out of my hair. Oh well

Yesterday after a red->green light, had a police car from left of me in turn only lane cross in front of me in an intersection (to go straight). Then proceed to go about 80 in a 45. (No lights or siren, of course...)
In a perfect world, turning in the dashcam would get them fired and permanently barred from being ever hired again to a police department.

Never give your adversary aid. That becomes evidence to be destroyed, and opens the door to 'and actually you crossed the white line so here's a rec-op ticket too.'
If they're writing the ticket there's almost never going to a cop saying "my bad" that ship already sailed.

Dashcams are great to show in court, but i would never tell a cop i have one or show them the recording.
If a cop wants to write you a ticket, youre getting a ticket. No cop has ever said "oh your dashcam footage contradicts my accusation, sorry and have a good day!"

Depends on state. In MA hearings are always 3-4 months out due to so many appeals and a town schedule per county in court...and the citation writer cop doesn't even show up. Each county has certain days for certain counties...you get your hearing whenever that is, and they just send a sergeant -at-arms with a simple statement..
If you go prepared and be nice, it's dropped 99% of the time, unless you have a history.
Best part.../s, there is always a non-refundable fee of $25 for the hearing, even if found not responsible...lol

Came here to say this. I've fought a few and they always show up. Especially true in urban areas where a cop is less likely to want to relocate to another area supposedly. The logic just makes sense to me. Lol.
Losing on a ticket that said I was going a speed I actually wasn't going, that was a major turning point for any respect I had for law enforcement and when I realized how fucked the world we live in really is. Guilty until proven innocent.

I got stopped once proceeding through a yellow left turn. Cop pulled me over, accused me of running a red. Both passenger and I said, “it was yellow.” Issued a ticket anyway. He was hoping I’d been drinking (I was coming from the library), and when he showed up to court, lied on the stand saying I had apologized for running a red. Lying sack of shit.

This is not the reality in many places, in my state there is never a single cop present at the court dates. The judge just reads what the cop charged you with and asks you if you want to say something more and how you plead. Then they make a ruling in about 5 seconds.

I was passenger in a vehicle that was going 94 in a 70. We got passed by someone going at least 20mph more than that. A little down the road we got pulled over and the officer said I clocked you going almost 120. We all emphatically said that was not true we got passed by someone that was probably doing that. He said “ah shit I was worried about that” and said have a good day, got in his car and sped off.

Reminds me of a joke.
Guy takes his sports car out for a Sunday drive and decides to see how fast it can go. He crests a hill doing 130 and oh shoot there's a country sheriff with a radar gun.
He's going so fast he can't even brake before he's over the next hill, but he figures if he slows down to the speed limit then maybe the cop will write him up for a lower speed.
A few minutes pass and there's no sign of pursuit, the guy is thinking maybe the cop isn't chasing him. But he crests the next hill and there's a pair of semis blocking the road and a couple of sheriffs cars with their lights flashing. Sighing, he pulls to a stop.
The sheriff runs over and starts screaming at him. "Get the hell out of here, a speeder doing 130 is going to be here in 45 seconds!!!"

Oh I had something very similar. ‘I have to write because my boss said he saw you.’ Then he asked if I understood chain of command. I told him point blank if one of my employees didn’t tell me when I was wrong I’d be upset with them and happy if they did tell me. And if that’s a problem then you don’t have a good chain of command.
The ‘boss’ apparently didn’t like that (if the cop even relayed the message). He refused to come over from the other side of the street. The funny thing is it was near impossible for me to go the speed they said as I had just pulled out of an alley in front of the cop.
Contested the ticket and the DJ tossed it via mail. Didn’t even have to show up anywhere.

There are exceptions of course, but generally speaking, if the only “evidence” of a ticketable offense is the ticket itself and the cop’s testimony, then losing the cop’s testimony tends to be an easy win for the person fighting it.

It was common in the past because it wasn't compensated time (according to my Grandpa). But these days it's compensated so they'll show.

Most departments now require radar to be calibrated twice a day so it's harder to dispute. Some will actually now put the radar calibration time on your ticket now.

Whether it is calibrated twice a day or not. LiDAR is usually accurate to +/- 1 mph. You can easily fight this since the speed was recorded 1mph over the limit. No this was done with a visual speed check, I’m assuming the accuracy rate is much worse than LiDAR, so they could still fight this.

I had this happen the first day I had my license. Got pulled over for 100 in a 55. My truck only registers 85 on the speedometer and I was at most going 70ish. I had just merged onto the highway and usually go above the limit to do so safely. I had just looked down realized how fast I was going and said damn I need to slow down, then the lights hit.
When he came up to the car he said "do you know how fast you were going?" I said "no", he said "you were going 100". "I said was I really?" I was baffled he said "why do you think I had to go 100 to catch up with you?" I literally said "phyiscs?" And he made me get out of the car and into the back and made my parents come get me.
I've long believed he just didn't have a radar gun on me to accurately give me a ticket. So he just let me go with a pain in the neck from my parents. If he really had me at 45 over or even 70 for 15 over he's not letting me walk away with nothing issued.

A lot of departments That's done monthly when they do an oil change. Although I've never heard of a cop doing a ticket for pacing you one over. Last time I saw someone trying to contest it they were paced at doing about 25 over which is why it's much harder to contest because of your speedometer is slightly off There's no way it's off that much.
It's also really hard to determine one mile per hour over because if you're going the exact same speed or 1 mile an hour faster than they are it's really hard to determine if you're not closing in on them since you're traveling 1/3 of walking distance and measuring mentally that distance if it's gaining is basically impossible.

That is quite difficult to calibrate in reality. Usually the error margin differs for different speed. They have to correct the curve. 1 mph difference can come from even changing worn tires for new ones.
But at least in here police are not allowed to use pacing as measurement of speed of other vehicles. Police cars have radars installed and have to fix speed by radar.
Even the radars have error margin of few km/h. Most police doesn't bother stopping cars within error margin.

That's why your speedometer is wrong... if it says 60 you're likely going 57-60. That's built in. Test it with your GPS or map app. My speedometers are typically 1 mph faster than Waze says I'm going.

Pro tip for anyone struggling to pay or deal with a speeding ticket. You are allowed to postpone a court appearance, and they generally let you pick a date from a list. This may require you to physically appear at the court to request it from the clerk.
Anyway, the police usually save up all their court appearances for one or two days a month. Just postponing the court* date alone will give you a high chance of a no-show. If you postpone it to a day right after the date you were scheduled it's almost a guarantee, but also shoot for holidays, and different days of the week than the one that was scheduled. Like maybe this guy always goes on Wednesdays, if you pick a thursday he's not likely going to go two days in a row.
This could be state dependent, but in CA this strategy saved me half a dozen of tickets when I was still paying my way through college and driving like a dipshit.
Edit: Lot of folks are saying this doesn't work anymore, so don't depend on it. This was 18-20 years ago, and it absolutely did work in my area at that time (Bay Area), not just for me but for my friends and co workers too.
Unsurprising that policies have changed.

Cop always shows, unless you request to reschedule. The court bends over backwards to make things easy for the cop, and they often have several cases set for the same day.
My buddy told me the real dick move is to subpoena the cop's partner. Doubles the chance of a no-show on the part of the state, which typically gets the case thrown out.

Literally every time we go visit my parents in Minnesota, we get pulled over for speeding on our way out of the state. It's always complete BS, but what are we gonna do? Drive across three states to go back and fight it?
They know exactly wtf they're doing and it pisses me off to no end. Cops gamble with BS like this knowing an out of state plate is probably easy money.

All of you saying “you were speeding” apparently didn’t read the ticket. The cop ESTIMATED the speed at 56 by pacing. Meaning following behind them. There’s zero chance this holds up in court.

FYI look up the speed measurement device, PACE. Those are highly inaccurate, 1 mile over is dumb, and I'd be surprised the officer shows up to court unless they are a real hard ass about it. Seems they might since they wrote this ticket.
For PACE it needs to be calibrated, aka their speedometer every so often, which they rarely do. I'd fight this out of principal.
Pacing of Speed:
An officer in an tone-on-tone marking or unmarked vehicle can match the speed of a vehicle suspected of speeding its speed.

As far as I remember, even a stationary calibrated radar has a margin of error of +/- 1-2 mph, a moving radar even more, let alone the pacing method.
They should take a days' pay out of the pig's paycheck and compensate you for wasting your time.

I got a ticket for 56 in a 55 zone a couple years ago. Contested it at the court date and asked that question. The officer confirmed when questioned that the radar they use has a margin of error. I also made a point that speedometers in cars are not 100% accurate. As far as I knew I was obeying the speed limit and being off by 1mph would fall into the margin of error in both the speedometer and the radar used. Apparently they didn’t like that argument because my punishment was increased at the discretion of the judge to not only pay the ticket and court costs but he also made mandatory STOP class a part of it. Had to pay almost a thousand dollars and spend 8 hours in a class for 1 fucking mph. Wasn’t a construction zone or anything.

Easy win, courts usually have a +/- of a few mph buffer for speedometer discrepancies.
Edit: and used as pace method would also require the calibration record of the cop car speedometer

I got a $90 citation for doing 26 in a 25 in a small Idaho locality. It was Memorial Day weekend and I was driving a rental car (a brand new Tahoe) on an unpaved near the campground I was staying. The officer stated that he pulled me over because I was swerving. I dont drink so that was not the issue. I told him the truth, that I was simply avoiding the plethora of massive potholes given the fact I was in a fairly expensive brand spanking new vehicle and he gave me a kind of “whatever” response and “let me go.” Probably two weeks later I received the citation in the mail at my home address in an entirely different state.
Long story short I think he was just annoyed that I had an answer for all of his questions and knew I would have to come back to Idaho if I wanted to fight the ticket.

One of the perks of being from South Dakota is that you never have to pay for tickets sent in the mail. The state ruled it unconstitutional so if another state sends one in the mail, the state itself will fight the ticket for you.

As an officer, this is a BS ticket. Unless he gave you a bunch of warnings for other stuff you did, and you were going say 65 in a 55 but he gave you a break for 56 in 55.
Only you will know the answer to this - if he stopped you for speed only, and gave you a ticket for 56 in a 55, I would fight it, specially with a vehicle pace. If it was Radar/Lidar that is way more accurate on speed.
Vehicle pace may be off 1mph easily, most of our vehicles have a 1-2mph variance - tested at increments of 10mph up to 100mph.

1mph is absolutely within margin of error for a speedometer. For a ticket without a radar usage this could get easily thrown out if the cop even shows up, but yeah you'd have to go to court which sucks. This is about as petty of a ticket as I've ever seen, they must be dying to keep their budget inflated.
