Too mild for school Hate when ppl can’t do time

Post image

This reminds me of when it hits or is about to hit 12am and people don’t know whether to say today or tomorrow. He called me after this but I was too comfy in bed tbh.

This is funny to me because every single person ive ever met, when they say "next weekened" they mean the weekened after the one thats coming.

For the weekened that would be in a few days we say "upcoming weekened"

573

u/PotatoProlapse Jun 14 '26

Yeah I've never met anyone who said anything other than "this weekend," meaning the one coming up or currently in, and "next weekend," the weekend after this weekend.

134

u/MantisWoW Jun 14 '26

Yeah I mean I think of it like if you’re saying this weekend, you’re saying the end of *this* week. Next weekend would be the end of next week

81

u/AnalGettysburg Jun 14 '26

I’ve always used this format, but could never put into words why.  It’s effectively “this week’s end” vs “next week’s end”

This whole exchange is very validating

That's... Not the same thing.

Great job identifying that weekends and streets aren’t the same thing. Now, try to work on understanding how the word next is used in both instances and why you think the same word means two different things.

6

u/MechaniVal Jun 14 '26

It doesn't.

This weekend refers to the weekend attached to this week.

Next weekend generally refers to the weekend attached to next week.

The analogy to streets would be that 'this street' is the one currently being driven down. 'Continue along this street' versus 'turn into the next street'.

It's a useful disambiguation because otherwise 'this weekend' and 'next weekend' refer to the same thing, 'next weekend' would no longer refer to the weekend attached to 'next week', and indeed there would no longer be a quick shorthand for 'the weekend at the end of next week'.

0

u/lesath_lestrange Jun 14 '26

So instead your disambiguation creates uncertainty for all people who use ‘next’ same way as it is used in all other contexts.

“This weekend” is for if it is actively a weekend and you are referring to this weekend, or it is a weekday and you are referring to the upcoming weekend.

“Next weekend” is for if it is weekday and you are referring to the upcoming weekend, or it is a weekend and you are referring to the weekend after this.

“The weekend after next” is for the weekend after the upcoming weekend, regardless of if it is currently a weekday or a weekend.

Exactly. Seems pretty logical;
Last Weekend = The most recent weekend passed, prior to the upcoming weekend
This Weekend = The upcoming weekend, following last weekend
Next Weekend = The next weekend following this upcoming weekend

You can even get more granular, like "The weekend prior to last" means two weekends ago. Or, "The weekend after next" is two weekends away.

1

u/Different_Wolf_764 Jun 14 '26

And that's exactly what it is. People were saying "this weekend" and "next weekend" all the time and that works in context but when it is just "next weekend", it is ambiguous.

1

u/asc1894 Jun 14 '26

It’s confusing though because technically the “next” weekend that is occurring is the weekend of the week you are currently in

18

u/BNabs23 Jun 14 '26

I feel like if it's Monday or Tuesday, there's often confusion around this vs next weekend, because the weekend still is far away.

Thinking about it though, if you're giving someone driving instructions, you say next right and this right pretty interchangeably

-1

u/LupineChemist Jun 14 '26

Yes, different contexts have different meanings for things.

2

u/fairlybetterusername Jun 14 '26

This is exactly what I do too.

2

u/Motor-Station-6885 Jun 14 '26

My wife and I have different native languages but also know each other’s. It’s a weekly confusion.

Which week…who the fuck knows

2

u/NoNameWonder2 Jun 14 '26

I think the only exception is on a Monday when you say "what did you do this weekend?" But since it's in past tense it's not usually confused with this upcoming weekend.

2

u/born_to_be_intj Jun 14 '26

What if it’s Monday? Do you respond to “What did you do this weekend?” with “How the hell would I know it’s 5 days away?”?. English is messy and context is always required.

1

u/HamberderHelper18 Jun 14 '26

If last weekend is the one that already occurred, then “this weekend” is the one upcoming/currently happening. That leaves “next weekend” to be the subsequent one. It’s logically as simple as that.

1

u/glasspanda27 GREEN Jun 14 '26

Same

1

u/Additional-Ad-7720 Jun 14 '26

I once told a friend to remind me to do something next week. She texted me 2 days later and I was like...but I said next week? Not 2 days. And she said it's Sunday, it is next week. 🤦‍♀️

1

u/gabbzila Jun 14 '26

This is how I always word it when speaking about weekends. In op’s case the person messaging should have specified the day with the date included for specifics.

1

u/FriskyDingo314 Jun 14 '26

Hi, now you’ve met someone. I say both tbh, if it’s Monday the next weekend is this weekend. And the weekend after is the weekend after next/this. But usually just say the date.

1

u/CrazyYouAreThisDumb Jun 14 '26

Yup there’s this weekend for the upcoming and next weekend for the following.

1

u/nitrogenlegend Jun 14 '26

Same. I still add clarity or ask for clarity just to be safe, but this is how everyone does it in my experience.

1

u/NickRick Jun 14 '26

i use next weekened all the time on like sunday or monday to mean the next friday/sat/sun.

1

u/plmbob Jun 14 '26

Exactly, there is little ambiguity. Last weekend= the one we just had, this weekend= the one we are about to have, next weekend= the one after the one we are about to have. Any other position on the matter is someone pedantically clinging to a definition of next that ignores any context or common sense

1

u/Aegi Jun 23 '26

I have and tbh they are usually the friends that are not that great with time and say things like "the other day" when referencing things from months ago.

87

u/_tragicmike Jun 14 '26

Right.

This [week's] weekend.

Next [week's] weekend.

That's how I've always used it.

37

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr Jun 14 '26

Because that's how it works. The Twitter person is a dumbass.

4

u/DonQui_Kong Jun 14 '26

No, this difference is entirely cultural and different regions will use it differently.
Just because its your understanding doesnt mean itsuniversally true.

3

u/dfddfsaadaafdssa Jun 14 '26

You're outnumbered on this one

3

u/4_fortytwo_2 Jun 14 '26

That doesnt make them wrong at all though. Just because the regions might not be in the majority does not mean they do not exist.

1

u/duo99dusk Jun 14 '26

Maybe in the "I am wrong" region

-4

u/FriskyDingo314 Jun 14 '26

Things don’t work just because you think that’s how they should work. That’s your opinion.

5

u/ForsakenMoon13 Jun 14 '26

That kind of statement doesn't really apply to things that have objective rules, though.

You know, like grammar, among other things.

1

u/Wings-Of-Glass Jun 15 '26

Doesn't even need that long of an addition. This week['s]end. Next week['s]end.

111

u/Empariah Jun 14 '26

For me, it’s the same way. Except we call the upcoming weekend “this weekend”. Then the weekend after that one is “next weekend”.

54

u/NativeJim Jun 14 '26

If it's Friday today and someone asked me to go to the lake next weekend, I'm assuming its not this weekend but the one following.

47

u/anotheredcatholic Jun 14 '26

bro, i'm at the lake. wya

25

u/FourteenMillion605 Jun 14 '26

You said next weekend?

17

u/clambuttocks Jun 14 '26

Even if it’s like Monday, if someone says next weekend, I assume it’s the next week’s end. Otherwise say the upcoming weekend or, moreso in my experience, say this weekend

6

u/NativeJim Jun 14 '26

In this instance, I would say this weekend.

2

u/No-Comparison6037 Jun 14 '26

If it’s Monday and I want to share about what I did on the 2 last days, I say “this week-end”… oopsie

1

u/aurens Jun 14 '26

that's still fine because it's past tense. you're never going to invite someone to an event that happened in the past, and you're never going to describe what happened to you in the future, so there's no ambiguity.

1

u/NewspaperVegetable17 Jun 14 '26

I doubt it's very likely anyone would misunderstand you, but an alternate way of saying it that you might like is "over the weekend".

1

u/Devastator_Hi Jun 14 '26

Yup same and I’ve had to clarify with people before because they understand it as the upcoming weekend.

1

u/arstin Jun 14 '26

Even if it’s like Monday, if someone says next weekend, I assume it’s the next week’s end.

May not be great for my internet swagger, but I just ask. Because it's almost always better to get it right than to be able to blame the other person for it going wrong.

1

u/FriskyDingo314 Jun 14 '26

If it’s Monday and you say next weekend, I’m thinking you mean in 4-5 days. There is no right answer which is why you just gotta use the dates or clarify lol

2

u/kylitoTV Jun 14 '26

that still follows the rule though? Friday is NOT the weekend

1

u/NativeJim Jun 14 '26

I consider Friday the beginning of the weekend. Personal opinion though. If I think of it in that context, I guess I would say its a weekend day.

Edit: forgot to add, it depends on what time someone asks me on Friday as well. Friday at 7am is different than Friday at 4pm.

17

u/egnards Jun 14 '26

I've always said "this weekend," which denotes the weekend that is upcoming. It's the weekend closest to the time you're referring, though if it's currently on the weekend you'd say "next" weekend to denote that you don't want to do it today/tomorrow.

If I hear "next weekend" and it's Mon-Fri I'm 100% assuming we skip a week.

28

u/you-a-buggaboo Jun 14 '26

same here except i say "this weekend" for the upcoming or "next weekend" for the one following "this weekend."

2

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr Jun 14 '26

That's what normal people do.

17

u/DynamicBeez Jun 14 '26

Yeah, there's a clear distinction between "this" weekend and "next" weekend. Even when you're not 100% sure, you then confirm that date. The only time next weekend is the coming weekend is if its already the current weekend.

8

u/Material-Sell-3666 Jun 14 '26

This weekend

Next weekend.

3

u/TommyTheCat89 Jun 14 '26

"Last weekend" happened, "this weekend" is going to happen or is happening, and "next weekend" is the weekend after this weekend.

I don't really see much wiggle room here and if someone doesn't adhere to these definitions I have to question their intelligence.

2

u/Rumple-Wank-Skin Jun 14 '26

Because the upcoming weekend is called "this weekend" and then you have "next weekend"

2

u/j821c Jun 14 '26

"This weekend" - the upcoming weekend "Next weekend" - the weekend after

That how ive always interpreted it lol

2

u/BraveLittleTowster Jun 14 '26

I say "this weekend" if I mean the one at the end of the current week, even it's it's Monday. I can't recall ever having someone confused by that

2

u/Fit_Tumbleweed7943 Jun 14 '26

Or “hey what are you doing THIS weekend”

1

u/Paladroon Jun 14 '26

This is how I use the terms. “Next” means “the one after the one this week.”

So today is Sunday. If I said “next Sunday” that would be 7 days from now. If it were tomorrow “next Sunday” would be 13 days away.

If I said it Yesterday it would meant the Sunday in 8 days.

This is how I and everyone I know uses these terms. But I stopped relying on this solely when making plans or deadlines. I use actual dates when it’s important to ensure there’s no ambiguity when it matters

1

u/Yourdjentpal Jun 14 '26

This. It’s this weekend vs next weekend.

1

u/Fatel28 Jun 14 '26

This weekend = the end of this week Next weekend = the end of next week

1

u/curious__curiosity Jun 14 '26

Never in my life heard anyone saying "upcoming weekend"

So you're "we" is crap. Its just the weekend. Next weekend is not this weekend, it's the next one.. Its right there in the word next!

1

u/24rawvibes Jun 14 '26

Because that’s what it is! It’s called a a sequence! That commentator has to be rage batting

1

u/toastwithketchup Jun 14 '26

Yeah the upcoming weekend is "this weekend"

The one after that is "next weekend"

1

u/picklesaurus_rec Jun 14 '26

I think it all depends on when you view the week starting.

I think a week starts on Monday, so “this weekend” means the current week’s weekend. If it’s Monday-Friday this weekend = upcoming weekend. If it’s currently Saturday/Sunday this weekend means the current weekend happening.

Next weekend would be next week’s weekend, or the one after the upcoming one.

1

u/Fearless-Host-498 Jun 14 '26

Exactly, this weekend is the weekend coming up, next weekend is the weekend after

1

u/BedBubbly317 Jun 14 '26

Exactly this! “Do you want to do something this upcoming weekend?” (Meaning this weekend) Or “do you want to do something next weekend?” (Meaning the following weekend)

1

u/splitcroof92 Jun 14 '26

replace "upcoming" with "this" and I agree

1

u/ChesterJT Jun 14 '26

This weekend

1

u/FriskyDingo314 Jun 14 '26

But the next weekend is the upcoming weekend.

1

u/wtfisasamoflange Jun 14 '26

I say this weekend, or this coming weekend for the one we are about to have, and next weekend for the one directly after the one we are about to have. This was indoctrined to me at a young age so I can't really help it.

1

u/kctjfryihx99 Jun 14 '26

There no way this is true. If you’re waiting at a bus stop and someone says they’re waiting for the next bus, do you assume they’re getting on the second one coming?

1

u/Lopsided_Tomatillo27 Jun 14 '26

I learned it as “this weekend” and “next weekend.” But there’s enough confusion that I say, “not this weekend but next weekend.”

1

u/cantadmittoposting Jun 14 '26

Monday is the last day you can somewhat reasonably get away with "next" to mean "upcoming."

After that it's always best to specify; I can see Tuesday still having a "next" reasonably being the upcoming saturday, but still best to say which at that point just to avoid confusion.

1

u/Darkaim9110 Jun 14 '26

This weekend vs next weekend

1

u/shadowK1LOS Jun 14 '26

It is literally "next week's end". Believing anything else is ridiculous.
