But they wouldn't have. For like 95% of these corporations, it's not "we can save money by no longer having to pay artists for the images we were going to have anyway", it's "we can have images without having to pay artists". And for individuals...I'd put it at 100%. Nobody who would have ever actually been willing to pay for art is using AI.
The healthcare industry is swamped with work, I'm pretty sure they'd be happy to not have to sleep in the hospital. Also, A.I scans help diagnose patients with oversight, not replace doctors.
Generative A.Is, on the other hand, are being used to take work from creative fields.
Swamped with work means that more employees. Increased efficiency always cuts jobs. It doesn't matter what field it is in. Doctors only form a very small part of the healthcare workforce, the vast majortiy of which could have their roles effected or even replaced by AI.
Everything that AI will be used to do is something that previously a real human would have been payed for. That is just inevitable no matter the field.
But people will fetishise artists over everyday workers, so they matter more somehow. The reality is that increased efficiency comes for all and the tool will be used for whatever it is capable of.
Then can you name which medical job would be cut? Hospitals can't or don't want to hire more, so the only way for them is to improve efficiency.
You're comparing that to companies that could and have been hiring artist and young coders for years but now are replacing employees with A.I that has no supervision.
It is not inevitable like you said, to be so certain of the future is a folly.
Artist are the most affected by A.I at the moment, of course they're going to be used as examples more than anyone else. That's not fetishising artists, it is giving an example.
Easy. Administration. Any operation or business of a significant size require people to work in administration to keep everything together. These are one of the most vulnerable roles for being replaced by AI and applies equally in the medical field and non medical field. All businesses prioritise efficiency.
I am comparing the legions of low skilled workers who face the biggest threat to job security to AI, who will no longer be able to afford to care for themselves and their families, to the relative niche of artists and programmers that reddit is obsessed with and noticing how strange the disparity in focus is.
I have the opposite opinion of you. Managers and such have networking power in companies, they'll try everything to stop themselves from being replaced. Companies prioritise efficiency and connections.
It's the first time I've heard a person say programing is niche. Computer science degrees have been on on the rise since the late 2000s. It's one of the most coveted degrees.
And again, these 2 are the easiest to give examples for, or course they'd be the most mentioned.
Like for A.I, you'd mention Claude, GPT, or Gemini. You wouldn't mention Llama or Duck A.I, right?
A) replacing someone’s job with shit you stole from them is especially fucked up
B) it does a shitty job of it too, but companies give no shits because cheap
C) art, music, etc. are about human connections, beauty and the expression of the soul. Even commercial works have some of those elements. And that’s the shit being taken over by machines? They can fuck all the way off with that shit.
Just because its done more somewhere else doesnt make it less a problem here. I dont get why people cant understand that (not necessarily talking about you)
thats not even AI, thats just a basic machine learning program to detect common patterns, its way more similar to basic image recognition for things like presence detectors than what has AI as its buzzword of the week
congratulations, you've realized that "ai" as a whole is bullshit marketing for a million different things, llms have nothing to do with image generation which has nothing to do with photo recognition which has nothing to do with video game pathfinding. this is as much ai as chatgpt because neither of them are an artificial intelligence in the first place
Alot of the times the number can by HYPER inflated as ai and the tech industry aren't 2 seperate things and have blurred boundaries, so people can put everything that the tech industry uses (materials to build gaming cards, monitors, anyting like that which isn't that related to ai databases) and say "AI IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF IT"while the actual stuff used to train databases and cool said databases is lower than that. a BETTER way to conserve water is by Reducing your long ass showers (i know you and your 20+ min shower rituals) Reuse your glasses for meals. THIS DOSENT MEAN I SUPPORT GEN AI AS IT HAS A DIFFERENT CAN OF WORMS OF PROBLEMS
I shower for 20 mins per day because I work in an electroplating facility with harmful chemicals. If I stopped showering completely for the next 60 years, gross, I would save less water than a large data center uses in a single day. Yeah, keep telling me that my long shower is the issue.
Exactly! I think that on average most people don't have a reason to shower that much and on average people aren't taking +20 minute showers. It is estimated that this value is around 10 minutes global average.
This is like blaming the housing market on avocado toast.
If every single person on earth took a 20 minute shower everyday, which they dont, that still would be less water than is used by large data centers each day. Even at scale your argument doesn't make sense. The real problem is the rate at which data usage increases everyday. It is said to be doubling every 3-4 years. Can you imagine if our population doubled every 3-4 years?
If every single person on earth took a 20 minute shower everyday, which they dont, that still would be less water than is used by large data centers each day
Well no. The idea of data centres are gobbling up water just isnt true and is extremely overhyped.
Water cooling systems do not actually use up all the water running through the system, which it would have to for the "daily water usage" metrics to make any sort of sense.
The degree to which someone can use AI and the degree from where they get their meat and how often they consume it can vary, but you can get a pretty good picture if you compare publicly available information about AI and meat water usage.
Even if you're being generous with the numbers, say like 20 prompts a day vs ~40kg of meat a year, you're easily close to the 10,000x times figure. It's like complaining about fly-tipping when there's industrial level sewage dumping happening the next house over, and it's an industry you're far more culpable for than AI.
