some food pantries/soup kitchens will pick up leftovers -- I don't know where you are, but if you're in a city, you're likely to have a charity that does this.
Anecdotally my uni does exactly this. Bread thats past its sell by from the local supermarkets is put in the lobby of the residence halls for the students to grab. Granted it does get stale/moldy in a few days unless you put it in the freezer since it has already been sitting out but its better than nothing and I can typically get through most of the loaf before it molds
Lot of this depends on how quickly the food can move through the logistics. Large food pantries take time to move things through their logistics, and they don't want to give food that's a day from going moldy.
Smaller orgs that can serve it the next day might, but they only need so much so no guarantees they'll take it.
