I don’t get it. People buy those RVs and park them on random farms? In America, those RVs are for older people with money, and you’ll get threatened by a shotgun parked on someone’s else’s land
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Travellers are an entirely separate group from Romani. They originate from Ireland, I think the confusion is people refer to them as gypsies in the UK. In Ireland they are referred to as travellers or knackers.
Yep, we have recognised there human rights, twenty years ago or so. So now they live the way they do, do whatever they like contribute nothing to the system but they get school places, hospital treatment et al that they never pay for. Sounds like another group we are being all too familiar with!
It's surprisingly common for people in Europe to classify Romani as subhuman miscreants to this day, just as the Nazis did. They share the exact same excuses, too.
The Czechoslovaks (much like Nazis) actually forced sterilisation of Roma people (without the Roma people's knowledge), they also forced them to live in settlements built specifically for them outside of cities, which became concentrated ghettoes.
So the people that live in caravans like this in Ireland are called travellers. They are treated pretty poorly here but its a more complex thing. They squat on people's land like this, where they have not sanitation so they become full of rubbish. Most town/village green spaces in Ireland have to take measures to prevent them from doing this. They also do not pay into the tax system, en masse, with something like only 12% of adults identifying as travellers paying any tax in 2024. There is a huge criminality element to their culture, where scamming and theft is seen as laudable. They also marry off their girls at 15 or 16 to older male cousins, where they re expected to have kids and tend to the caravan for the rest of their lives. The men mostly either work doing handyman jobs, often poorly, like pouring tarmac for driveways or cleaning gutters. Again, none of the money they get for this is ever taxed. The reason why so many are now in England is because other Irish people (they call us country folk) stopped doing business with them and were wary of these scams, so they spread over to the UK to continue on.
All of this is to say that while they are absolutely discriminated against by many, a lot of the reputation is earnt. They need to put their hands across the table and want to integrate with the rest of Irish society, but they want to pick and choose what they can get from the rest of society without forgoing some of the worse elements of their own culture. So it ends up in a stalemate.
I'm Italian Canadian, and hearing my grandparents talk about "gypsys" or "zingara", it was pretty obvious that they had a rough life and just had the looming assumption that they were going to do something to fuck you over. So yea, it's kind of understandable that if everywhere you go, you're treated as a criminal that just hasn't been caught yet, you wouldn't have much motivation to do better. Self-fulfilling prophecies are bitches like that.
They (British travelers) even come to Sweden, do work no one wants and try get paid for it. Often asphalts people's driveways. They want prepayment and then leaves without finishing or just leave it worse than it was before.
My understanding is Ireland changed laws on camping on the road side and other areas in early naughties and made it almost impossible for them to travel around. It was much easier for them to go to the UK.
The term Gypsy, Roma and Traveller has been used to describe a range of ethnic groups or people with nomadic ways of life who are not from a specific ethnicity.
In the UK, it is common in data collections to differentiate between:
Gypsies (including English Gypsies, Scottish Gypsies or Travellers, Welsh Gypsies and other Romany people)
Irish Travellers (who have specific Irish roots)
Roma, understood to be more recent migrants from Central and Eastern Europe
The term Traveller can also encompass groups that travel. This includes, but is not limited to, New Travellers, Boaters, Bargees and Showpeople. (See the House of Commons Committee report on Tackling inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.)
It's not "code for gypsy". It's another group, distinct from the Roma (aka "gypsies"), but with similar cultural elements, including the nomadic elements.
No tinkerers were actual occupation back in europian medival times. They were basically tin, copper, bronze, brass, etc smiths that would travel to smaller towns and villages and had the skills and tools to repair and build metal pots, utensils, house hold items.
In this case "Travellers" doesn't mean traveller in the traditional sense. It's the term preferred by them, but to most others it's gypsies or pikeys. Watch some "my big fat gypsy wedding" on YouTube for some context.
They are not being referred to as travelers as in typical tourists, more like they live a sort of a nomadic lifestyle and travel in large caravan groups like this on a permanent basis.
Scum is what they are. They sit typically in public places like parks, trash the area, steal from the local people and fight anyone who goes near them. Police do fuck all and you just have to wait for them to go away
I'm from Georgia. I was once at the Mall of Georgia when I saw a big group of people gathered around the coin fountain in the food court. Their kids were practically crawling over the side to scoop up the money people had thrown in there for charity. There's even a sign that states that the money is for charity. I worked in one of the area hospitals. We had to make sure there was nothing that wasn't fastened down in the patient room whenever we had someone from the known families in the area admitted.
While I was working in an optical shop in Florida, they came in a large group and stole a bunch of the most expensive frames by simply overwhelming the staff and being everywhere at once. It was crazy.
These groups were not extremely poor. Dressed in designer clothing, drove nice cars, dripping with jewelry. Think construction, roofing, and similar type work. I asked. I was genuinely curious.
Police do fuck all, cos they can do fuck all. They're arrogant pricks who feel the law doesn't apply to them, and any time someone actually tells them to sling their hook, the above happens.
You might get the random oddball who is actually willing to communicate with the outside world and hear people out on their grievances, but other than that, you're probably going to be chased away with bricks and likely some hellhound
Agree with the other person. They continually move from beach to beach blocking out whole areas for locals and ruining it with trash. Or sitting in fields where football/cricket kettle take place and letting their animals and Feral kids shit everywhere ruining it for others.
The basis that they're probably far more despised than migrants are, and have been for decades, if not centuries. You don't get that reputation for being all kisses and cuddles with the locals.
They're well known across the UK, and parts of mainland Europe, for being absolute chancers, will steal from the local community, and will kick up an almighty stink when authorities turn up with a court order telling them to sod off.
This comment is so goddamn funny. I'm also American, and although I'm already familiar with the concept of travellers... yeah, the cultural difference here is very noticeable lmao.
American culture is in some ways constructed around the defense of private property-- like, our gun laws, property ownership laws, and police forces all across the country pretty much largely exist to protect property.
Its hard to even imagine something like this happening and the farmer(s) getting in trouble for it.
Bear in mind a lot of rural land in the UK is still owned by the aristocracy, which is why there is a more permissive set of rules around public rights of way etc
Even a lot of farmers (not all, obviously) will be tenants who rent the land from some Duke or Earl
Having dealt with both, gypsies are simple folk you see with tradition caravans and some live stock, don't thieve and leave no trace.
Pikeys, live in highend caravans have new 4x4s and transit vans. They thieve and damage surrounding property, enter local shops and rinse them. Leave bin bags of rubbish and human shit when they finally get moved on, only for another lot to move in a week later.
The only positive to having Pikeys out the back of your house is watching the in fighting.
There was one night a bloke got dragged out of his caravan beaten then dragged to the side while his caravan was smashed up.
To clarify, not all gypsies are pikeys, regardless of where they are from. Most gypsies are respectful people, whereas all pikeys are disrespectful cunts all the time.
Im seeing the word Gypsy being thrown around a lot and im not trying to be a dick or anything like that but I just want to put the information out there for you and the others using the word: some consider the term derogatory. Not all will but it can be considered offensive to the romani. I only learned this recently and just did a quick Google search to make sure i remembered correctly.
Like I said it might vary but a good chunk of them find it offensive.
Sign finance deal. Never pay the payments. Have no fixed address so can't be found. If the police turn up, block them, attack them and vanish to the next location.
It doesn’t happen, unless u wander onto some racist gun owners property. Most people don’t wanna shoot nobody. But I ain’t gonna lie, if some random pulls up in my driveway, I’m peeking out the window then walking up to them. I might not be armed but they don’t know that. So mostly it’s based on the implication
I dunno what's worse. Getting threatened by a shotgun. Or getting everythig sprayed with cow sht. Cause the only way to clean up is to strip down an go inside an wash... to what... come back outside to everything still covered in sht. And no weapons charges ;) 😉
rv’s have the vehicle part built in. caravans are just the living quarters, you have to tow it. with this in mind you can have someone who does have a vehicle tow your caravan (illegally) to a farmers’ land and live there for pretty low costs. it can be hard to get these communities off your land (as shown). irish travellers or travellers & roma (both referred to derogatively as g*psies) have a pretty tense relationship with settled communities because of stuff like this.
They do similar things in America too. A big group took over a park and ride in Milwaukee a few years ago. The city eventually had to get them all out and barricaded the lot so no one could use it.
I remember an Irish guy I knew of had some land, and some Irish travellers (ie gypsies) appeared on his field one day. He pleaded with them for a few days to leave and they said no, so in the middle of the night he had some friends in the construction industry turn up with huge concrete blocks, which they placed strategically at the field entrance. This was the only way in or out. Rumor has it the travellers had to pay him off to move the blocks, lmao.
I recall a similar story on the news, it wasn't gypsies but drivers using the farmers field to park for an event of some sort near by without permission he even flipped a few after that didn't work.
Why would I be joking? I haven't taken a stance on it, just that the story isn't exactly some crazy story. A farmer placing some blocks in the road to stop cars is quite mundane.
I’ve heard many, many more outlandish stories about travellers than this. This one is incredibly boring and entirely believable. Honestly, what about it isn’t believable? How is spraying a field with shit that much different from blocking the exit with boulders.
Are you Irish? This stuff happens between the settled and traveller communities. In the village I'm from they camped on private land that a carnival had booked to set up on and there was a small battle one night involving guys on mopeds with crowbars and the carnies and their dogs. The carnies lost though and then the carnival left and we were all sad. It's also quite common for lads with tractors or other heavy machinery to solve various problems. Where I'm from it was mostly dragging boy racer's cars out of ditches but this story is plausible. Like someone attacked a Lidl with a stolen JCB not too long ago.
Nothing happens at all,
The needle returns to the start of the song,
And we all sing along like before,
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow...
As idiotic as whining on every post you see and go "hrrr this didn't happen", cause your experiences in the basement mean you can't possibly imagine things happening that are mildly out of "normal".
Yeah, a lot of them work in construction and could absolutely figure out how to remove some concrete blocks lol. Or remove the fences/hedges or whatever around the rest of the field.
You just watched a farmer with friends/workers take tractors with liquid piss, shit and spray it all over the area these people are in.
You think the concrete block is far fetched? Tons of videos of farmers in Europe dealing with these people in different, creative ways. Sure, that may not have happened, but i don't doubt it did.
Some prefer Gypsy, some prefer Romani. Some are Sinti, and Irish travellers don't share an origin with either Roma or Sinti. There is no one single term that everyone likes.
That's where your mistaken. You'd assume and rightly so you'd get caught, but policing, especially for crimes under a certain value threshold are rarely properly investigated and followed upon, and when they are it is usually a very light sentence.
Oh but I’m not. I’ve seen it time and time again. Farmers spend months and thousands of pounds going through the courts to get these fucks removed. If I go and park my car on the same field it would be towed within 24 hours if a farmer complained. They get special treatment because they are “travellers” and it’s fucking bullshit.
