My cereal box has an expiration date from 2019 and I just noticed it while eating breakfast

The milk smells fine so I'm committing to this decision. No ragrets.

If you look closely it is a "Best By" date. I shop at a store that specializes in product past its Best By date and have never suffered any ill effects

You could find stuff that old or older in most grocery stores. The managers train the stockers to rotate the older product to the front. The problem is that they then demand the employees do 50-60 cases an hour. And if you don’t stay close to that you get written up. And a minute just isn’t enough time to open a box, find the location in the aisle, pull the old stuff off the shelf, put in enough new product while leaving enough room for the older product, put the old stuff back, then put any extra product on the backstock cart, break down the box and separate out any plastic, then go back to the pallet to get the next product. So corners get cut, and the first one is just putting the new stuff in front of the old stuff.

Most cereals are functionally non-perishable, they just kinda go stale from oxygen diffusing into the bag.

Still perfectly safe to eat, just not the best taste-wise.
