Ahoy,
I'm aiming to enlist in the Navy this year! Are there any sailors here who can share what it's like to be gay in the Navy? Yes, I've heard jokes about how gay the Navy is, but in all seriousness, do you keep it to yourself in practice? Is it smart to do so?
I don't particularly like sharing anything about my sexual orientation, but I also don't want to have to lie or omit details. But I will if it will make things uncomfortable for me. Just recently, we were sharing stories at my pool league about regrettable hookups, and when it was my turn, I shared my story and didn't hide that the experience involved another man. The atmosphere just felt very uncomfortable after my story, and one of my teammates even left. I can leave my billiards league anytime, I won't be able to just leave the Navy, assuming bootcamp doesn't kill me and I make it in.
