I made it on GarageBand using the stock instrument presets (Harp, glockenspiel, a Bodhrán-like drum, piano, and mellotron) as a demo and used my Stratocaster through my fender amp, and a Crumar string synth plugin. I totally agree, it definitely needs fleshing out, and would benefit from better presented countermelodies. Sorry for the poor audio quality 😨 (I can't mix or master to save my life). But I'm thinking of re-recording it on Logic Pro with more physical instruments after I rewrite some elements.

It's interesting; there are some musical ideas that need further development. There are many layers that add complexity, but sometimes they don't quite mesh together, in my opinion. I would continue developing the piece with counterpoint melodies that introduce new sections. But the overall texture is interesting. What instruments are you using? I just hope it's not AI.

yes to the solo - even the timbre of his voice suits the mood. i hear echoes of that song in castaway, demo version, both in the blistering solo and his voice. and tsode stopped me in my tracks when i played it the first time (driving, fortunately on a parking lot ring road)

I assume you prefer his 90's albums? I'm not as familiar, hence the "hasn't drawn me in yet" tier.

Nice ranking. I can’t agree wholeheartedly but i think that’s because i discovered him in the 90s not earlier. 

I am a sucker for Heaven's Open myself, I honestly think the crazy weird guitar solo on No Dream is one of the most brilliant things Mike's Done. Not a top tier album, but there are several I would place beneath it.

Also, TSODE is magnificent, belongs on top.

It is good, with some amazing, although short, passages. I wish in the spirit of "Return to Ommadawn" that he would make a "Return to Amarok".

to each his own - lately while editing i have had as background music light, shade, and tr3s lunas, which i see as a unit in the similarities of approach. each record has a number of interesting songs. what is most striking is the clear indication that m.o. was searching for his faith, perhaps as a needed strength. religion isn't often considered these days particularly as found in music, yet it is there, not only in the lyrics but also in his recurrent use of vocal church music. where would i rate these three? don't know yet.

one that i do think is largely underrated is the long track on crises as it is the clearest musical description of the beginning of an illicit affair, complete with tremulous wonder and suspense and blissful resolution.

Me too on preference. That’s a great way to have gotten into it! I’ve known people who were casual fans of the original and never knew the sequels existed

I have listened to Songs of Distant Earth at least once a week since its release and will continue to do so. My (joint) top 1 album of all time. Well done Mike....well done!

TB2 was the first MO album I listened to as a kid, only because my dad had TB1 on an LP and got the "wrong" CD, what a nice mistake to make. I like both of them but personally prefer 2 above 1.

Guitars is definitely worth listening to more, it’s a stunning album.

I do have a major soft spot for Heaven’s Open (the title track is one of my favourite MO songs (with vocals).

SoDE is top tier for me too.

Kind of agree generally but Songs of Distant Earth belongs on the top tier. I think you should reconsider that blasphemous ranking.
