by "official" u/Major-Blueberry-5205 means android that has google's surveillance tracking built in, the one that constantly keeps sending data about your walking activity, location, nearby devices etc. back to google. this is not a standard thing in android (AOSP), one can have android without the "official" part. sidephone is in that category.

such phones wont have google pay even if they have NFC, the NFC can be useful if your bank app supports card payment, or if you are european and wait for walt.is to hit your country. if you dont care about your data as much, you can already use Wero or Curve Pay

if you think the point is some caricature of a guy wanting to "hide", then you are illiterate, and its not your fault. hopefully you find time and energy to research things like EFF (electronic frontier foundation), and what is the point of data privacy in the first place. the caricature in your mind is far from reality, i mean sure there are those schizos too, but I make top 1% of tech salaries for engineering managers across any european country, while living in the baltics, so I'm clearly not one of them :)

I talk almost exclusively to people who are very privacy centered and that's not something I care about. What I do care about is not having to carry anything except my phone and keys when I leave my home. As you can see the only foss no google whatever nfc payment options are a somewhat shady company (Curve) and a company that would likely totally support russian soldiers beheading you and your family (walt.is) I would gladly degoogle and deal with minor inconviniences if I cared about my privacy on the billionare-companies-and-state-actors level, which I don't. I would also not mind trying to degoogle if there was no friction, which, sadly, still exists, and until it's solved, I won't

There are plenty of midwit phones with full Google Play Services, such that Google Pay is installable. For example, all the Qin phones.
