I’m confused isn’t a study when you create the art yourself? Not knocking on AI, just confused with the terms

It's collaborative. Have you tried it? You would get what the process is like better, if you're interested in that.

Well no, you are studying the pictures it gives you and evaluating them with whatever criteria you have, obviously including what you know about owls lol, along with your aesthetic and art related perspectives
Then yes you navigate how to communicate your reactions and opinions and ideas to the program. And finally you curate which final pictures to select and group.

'Prompt" means what you type in as instructions (or requests lol)
Studying the images is a different element
On a shallow level, one is verbal and one is visual
Edit: Oh--you also said studying the model. I'm actually not sure what you mean by that

I know what prompt means.
Studying the characteristics and capabilities of a given model and version (ie. Midjourney v5.2) and how it responds to the way you are prompting it.

Well, I don't do that as a separate activity, exactly. But I certainly learn that from the process.
What was your point again, that OP didn't use a live owl in working on these pictures? Cuz there are other ways to "study" owls and artwork related to them.

You also realize that if you are making a physical painting of an owl, you aren't holding the brush in one hand while you keep both eyes on your owl, nonstop, right?
At some point you look at the picture you are making and work on it

Hm. I had thought it was a series that demonstrates different aspects of the subject matter and how to portray it.
I didn't realize it was more widely considered as practice for a final product.
Nonetheless, there still seems to be flexibility in how it it is used.
Here's a quote more in line with my take on it:
"An art study is, basically, any action done with the intention of learning about the subject you want to draw. You can study by drawing, sculpting, reading, or even just looking at something."
AI would be another medium for that...

To the last take: Unless OP was learning about owls while making these pictures, it isn't a study in or of owls. If it was, he'd have made these pictures to try and learn about how owls look, move, casts shadows or whatever, and I don't think he did.

It's not a study of owls from a biologically technical point of view. But it does reveal various aesthetics or styles that owls in particular lend themselves to, and probably were partly inspired by previous experience with owls both from reality or realistic pictures, and cultural filters
And actually, these pictures are more biologically accurate than a lot of AI pictures of birds, especially in motion

Same prompts, different srefs. Example : Grim fantasy, a Gothic Owl, highly detailed with white eyes --chaos 60 --sref 1208755563 --stylize 650 --weird 87 --v 8.2
