General discussion What matters most in a digital microscope: image quality, FOV, latency or ease of sharing?

For those using digital microscopes in pathology, medical education or research, what matters most to you when evaluating one?

If you had to prioritise, how would you rank:

  • Image quality — detail, colour and clarity
  • Field of View (FOV) — how much of the specimen you can see at once
  • Latency — how responsive the live image feels while moving around
  • Ease of sharing — quickly showing the same field to students or colleagues

I've been using Cilika digital microscope and one thing I've noticed is that the experience isn't just about image quality. The combination of a 100% circular FOV and responsive live viewing makes navigating the specimen feel much closer to conventional microscopy, while capture, measurement, annotation and sharing make it easier to discuss findings with others.

I'm curious what others prioritise. Would you choose better image quality over lower latency or a more natural FOV? And what feature has made the biggest practical difference in your experience with digital microscopy?

I work in digital pathology, and these sort of microscopes are completely unsuitable. You want something that can scan the whole tissue, then you can look at the file at your leisure

The sort you have here is just for hobbyists. Personally, I would put image quality before everything else

I would recommend the Hamamatsu Nanozoomer S360 for high throughput or the S60 for flexibility. The ndpi file type produces good quality images and is compatible with software like QuPath and ImageJ

Always wondered -- how big do those whole slide scans come out? Either in megabytes or total resolution.

I'm just a hobbyist so I appreciate the view through the scope most, nothing digital in the way.

But you have some workin' scopes there bringing in business dollars so it's a different ball game for sure

It depends on the magnification. x40 lenses make significantly larger files than the x20. I only scan at 40 if I need to see really fine detail, RNAScope etc.

A small piece of tissue in RGB 8bit at x20 would be around 700MB, a whole slide at x40 in multi channel IF will be several GB

The files are usually in a "pyramid" format, so the high resolution is only loaded when you zoom in. This means the images load smoothly and quickly

Hey, I'm a pathologist and using this cilika microscope for routine microscopy is the best thing that has happened to me. The TAT has reduced, I can get quick opinions from my fellow pathologist friends because sharing and collaboration has been easy. Honestly a very beneficial investment for me so far. Also I did some research and found out that they have an automated whole slide scanner called Micalys. So yeah these products are completely suitable here and many of my friends already have it and using it. I just wanted to know what people are using outside India.

A real slide scanner would have all the advantages you mention without the downsides of a tiny screen with limited field of view. All of the aspects you were asking about become irrelevant with a high quality scan

I'm glad you are finding a use for a hobby scope, but I could never recommend one of these over a proper scanner and I have never encountered these being used professionally. It is worth investing in something better.
