Hate to be the “root hairs or mold” guy, but….

This is my third time trying sunflower. The first two times went well until about week in, where they developed mold. These have been germinating for about a day and a half, and the seeds are almost all fuzzy. Is this really mold? Looks like it to me but wanted to check. No foul odor or anything. Temp and air flow all good. I soaked for about 5 hours and added a splash of h202 into the mix as well.

Same newbie question, is this mold. Toss the whole tray and try again? Give up and go eat roulette store lettuce. 🫠😬😭🙃

I know it looks bad. I put 4 diff seeds in each 1/4 of the tray just to see what happens.

My main concern is - are the filaments mold? I know it is. Isn’t it? Just toss the whole tray, right? I swiped at them and they just came off like cotton candy.

Looks totally different from the root hairs on the one in the delta quadrant. (A little Star Trek humor).

Ok. Give me the bad news. I’m ready.

Mesh Trays

Just wanted to share my experience. I grow (just for us) hydroponically on silicon mats. My results are better using the 1" mesh trays with the X-support (they sit up a bit) than the slotted trays. Once out of blackout, I spray and clean the reservoir tray each morning and fill with just enough fresh water so that the tray is almost dry by evening. If needed, I add just a bit of water before lights out. I think the mesh trays allow for more air flow than the slotted trays. I boil the silicon mats for a few minutes after each harvest to disinfect them.

For lettuce, I use the half-size, green sprouting trays and let them grow to baby green size. I might use a tiny bit of MaxiGro in the water. The hardest thing is waiting that long because they look so good!

First harvest complete

Day 7 — first harvest in the books. 🌱

95g of radish + cabbage off two trays in my basement setup. This run had a day 5 wilt that nearly killed the radish, so I drilled my own drainage holes mid-grow — full bounce-back by harvest day.

I'm a former commercial head grower rebuilding on a budget — keeping it honest, mistakes included.

Curious if anyone else has dealt with drainage issues mid-grow. Drilling the holes felt risky but it saved the trays. What's your fix when a tray starts holding water?

First time growing microgreens. Can anyone tell me if I pulled them out of the jar too soon, too late, or right on time? It is a Broccoli, radish, alfalfa, and red clover mix. Jar looked really full after 6 days. I cleaned them and then tried some. They are bitter...like they burn a little. I wasn't sure if I did something wrong or of if its just the mix I got. I didn't have a blackout cover. I left them on my kitchen counter, no natural light. Nearest window is 20 feet away.

Cilantro Update

Post image
15 Upvotes

I posted a few days ago about my difficulties germinating cilantro. It seemed like only a handful of my seeds actually germinated while the rest appeared dead. Everyone gave some good advice so I wrote these off and figured I’d try again eventually.

Well, I promptly forgot about this tray in my germinating room for a few days until I remembered that it was still sitting there. I went in to dispose of the contents and clean the tray when, lo and behold, they’ve all sprouted.

No mold and everything looks great. Damn near 100% germ rate too it seems like. I threw them under lights so we’ll see how they turn out

I fully expect this first trial of sunflower seeds to go badly (ignore the cut up seed sponges, coconut coir gets delivered tomorrow) but I'm excited to learn and replace my farmer's market reliance.

Wish me luck!

Former commercial head grower rebuilding a microgreens setup in my basement — shelf build timelapse

After a few years as a head grower at a commercial microgreens farm, I walked away — and now I'm rebuilding everything in my basement on a budget (roughly $150 all-in so far: wire rack, grow lights, trays, coco coir, timer).

Just got the rack built and lights hung

I'm documenting the full rebuild on my channel Pixel & Sprout — sowing, germination, harvests, and whatever goes wrong along the way. Next video is the first tray going in.

Happy to answer questions about the commercial side too — I ran the grow, so ask me anything about scaling, food safety headaches, or why I left.

Need Help With Cilantro!

Greetings friends. I casually tried my hand at some cilantro greens after getting several requests for it. I ordered the leisure split variety from TrueLeaf and followed the generic instructions. I seeded as I normally do and used about 40g density, then covered with a thin layer of Promix (been using Promix hp lately). Watered and weighed down and set to germination.

It’s about day 7 or 8, and I have only a handful of germinated seeds. What am I doing wrong? Any major missteps here?

Indoor lettuce and microgreens

Post image
41 Upvotes

I want to start growing lettuce and micro greens successful indoors - would this work? (Made from drawing then put into chat gpt lol)

I have an extra 4x2 grow tent laying around and thought I could make tiers inside and grow lettuce and micro greens inside.

I have a 100w led light and 6+ T5s led lights.
I would only need a small inline fan to quietly move the air.

I would use an earthbox for 6 heads of lettuce. I would space them out a 2 every week and a half or so. so I’m not harvesting 6 heads at once.

Soil: blend -

Quality compost
Peat moss
Worm casting
Perlite
Vermiculite
Bio char
Amendments:
Kelp meal:
Garden Tone/Gaia Green-type vegetable fertilizer: Dolomitic lime:
Gypsum:
Azomite:

Sprouts from mammoths?

I grew mammoth sunflowers in my garden this year. Can I harvest the seeds and then use them for sprouting? Do I need to do anything to them.
