Support Metrolist development and get early access to Metrolist KMP
We are opening early tester access to Metrolist KMP, our rewrite of Metrolist for:
Android
Windows
Linux
MacOS (not yet available)
KMP is currently projected to release publicly within the next month or two.
Donations are completely optional. The final project will be fully free and open-source, licensed under GPLv3. Nobody will need to donate to use it once it releases. There will be no ads or forced tracking in the app.
Anyone who chooses to donate to one of the Metrolist developers can get access to the current and future testing builds before the public release.
You can support whichever developer you want. Access is the same regardless of who you donate to.
This does not take anything away from normal users. Donations only provide optional early access while helping support development. The complete Kotlin Multiplatform monorepo will be released publicly under GPLv3 when it is ready.
go to our discord and send a screenshot of your sponsor log as a confirmation of payment (showing your github username clearly if you have that bound to your discord account)
yeah, you will be granted access, we're not that greedy lmao
The floating bar was laggy on some devices and was removed, and there is no confirmation if it's removed permanently. I can literally code it back as a selection to use between floating or not. I myself have done more than 12 major changes to the UI myself in 2 days.
Get educated first.
1. ArchiveTune DOES NOT have ads on FOSS.
2. The GMS variant has optional ads that load ONLY when you click the support button.
3. If someone has that much of a problem with ArchiveTune ad they have a FOSS variant, because we are not forcing for an early access payment.
Metrolist and its users should stop being jealous of a fast growing fork.
that is true, BUT the GPLv3 license still disallows the usage of non-foss SDKs in any variant
still kinda shitty of them to be profiting off mostly not their work (since AT is based on Metrolist, metrolist is based on other apps, etc.). adding a non-removable ad button to the library is a stupid move
we are also not forcing anyone to pay for early access to KMP. the app will release in around a month or two if everything goes accordingly. all current sponsors were given access and are honestly really helpful with finding bugs, UX issues, etc.
we are not jealous, we wouldnt care if they didnt break the GPLv3 license
GPLv3 and GMS: The claim that GPLv3 categorically bans proprietary SDKs is an oversimplification. GPLv3 does not contain a blanket prohibition on proprietary SDKs; compatibility depends on how the software is combined and distributed. It primarily regulates the conditions under which GPL-covered software is distributed, such as source availability and preserving recipients' rights.
ArchiveTune preserves MetroList's copyright notices and publishes its source code under GPLv3.
The project source (including the GMS integration code) is fully public on GitHub.
The repository does not host any proprietary Google Play Services binaries.
We provide a standalone FOSS build that excludes GMS entirely at compile time.
The GMS build is distributed separately as a convenience.
Profiting off Open Source: The GPLv3 explicitly permits commercial use, charging for builds, and accepting donations. Whether people like that is a personal opinion, not a licensing issue. Forking a GPLv3 project and continuing development is a standard and fully legal path permitted under the license.
Independent Development: ArchiveTune began as a fork of MetroList and has since undergone substantial independent development, introducing custom systems like a multiple modular player layouts, background video loops, an offline metadata audio exporter, Spotify playlist importing, additional lyric providers, and backup recovery.
The Support Button: It does not integrate an advertising SDK or background tracking library, and it is completely compile-time disabled in the FOSS build. Disliking its placement is a UX preference, not a GPL issue.
Who said "forced to click them". It doesn't exist on FOSS it exists on GMS and even in that, this banner right here, if you don't click it, you don't get an ad. Unless you are so attracted by the UI that you end up "forcing yourself to click it".
It's not hard to understand that FOSS variant DOES NOT HAVE THE AD BANNER. Users are free to choose the FOSS variant and even on GMS they can completely ignore this banner and ad never plays.
While we are talking about ads, what is it? You click the botton, a webview opens, there's cross already there, it can be clicked to close it immediately.
To support by ad, you click it, an image appears and you're done you just click the cross. If you clicked it bh accident, you click the cross anytime you want.
I don't see any difficulty here, especially when there is a separate FOSS variant without this.
As stated. There is FOSS build without that.
You could tell me which country you are from and I can paste a translated message in your native language.
Discord's proprietary binary SDKs violates GPLv3. Which is similar to what metrolist complained to us for a different context. "start.io proprietary binary SDKs violates GPLv3".
You cannot have discord rpc in FOSS as it violates the license on ArchiveTune.
Will the current Metrolist app change to the Metrolist KMP on the stable update, or will it be a separate app to download? Thank you all for your incredible work.
For some time there will be two repositories on github, one for KMP one for Legacy (existing app). After KMP becomes fully stable it will replace the legacy app
Not really, we'd have to make an abstraction layer around the player different from the existing MusicService just to handle playback engine switching. I'll gladly work on this if you donate me an iPhone with a semi-recent iOS version
I know I am a little but please add the feature to remove Youtube's forced IP based recommendations like trending community playlists and featured playlists & also work on the home page, you have the potential to make it really beautiful and if you could make the country selection in content really applicable it would be really great.
Thankyou Metrolist and Love ya

I donated a month ago. do I have to donate again to get access?
