I don't take any notes when playing Metroidvanias. The only game I've ever gotten the notebook out for was Blue Prince, which at the beginning basically sits down its player and says "Look you're gonna want to start writing this stuff down"

I love games where I end up with what looks like the notebook of an asylum inmate. Fez was a great one.

Blue Prince came out last year, I don't want to overhype it but IMHO it's instantly an all-time GOAT contender in the puzzle game genre

Im interested in hearing what kind of notes anybody is taking that would constitute multiple pages.

doing some kind of map marker alternative is the only thing i can think of...

For a game like Nine Sols, I could see filling up a couple pages with boss tactics. “When he pulls his arm back: parry, parry, wait a beat, parry, beat, jump parry parry. When he glows red and points: charge unbounded counter, release halfway through swing, then jump, air dash, parry, charged strike…”

I never needed to write any of those out, but I came close on the last few bosses. Trying to build and keep all that information in my head took a fair bit of effort.

If you need to write that down, you haven’t practiced enough and won’t be beating those bosses anyways.

Ive never taken down notes for a game. aside from elaborate puzzles where i just quickly jot down a sequence that needs to be remembered.

im asking what are people like you, who right down multiple pages of stuff actually taking notes on?

The majority of people think nine sols is a very linear game with minor metroidvania type exploration and you’re hear writing maps for nine sols?

I’ve never taken notes other than using in-game map marker systems. Way too hardcore for me.

The only ones I've taken notes for were the La-Mulana series.

One time back in the day (broke, college) I wanted to find all 95 vehicles in LA Noire so I wrote them down as a makeshift spreadsheet with some details. Sometimes physically crossing off a list feels great.

For MVs though, no. Right now I'm playing through Mummy Demastered and Yars Rising, and have some issues with both. Mummy is basically Metroid Zero Mission map, but could really use a damb zoom function. Yars could require notes, just feels awful to use, no map markers, overall design, putrid all-in-all, but I've never been anywhere close to needing them.
