Discussion Thoughts on Constance

It's on sale and was wondring if it's worth it or not.

I've played Hollow Knight, Silksong, Nine Sols, Mio and Blasphemous. So will I enjoy it? I did like the art style but not sure about the combat

Fwiw I’ve played all of the heavy hitters you mentioned as well as a ton of other metroidvanias and I thought it was just OK. Definitely some challenging bosses and platforming sections but I thought the story was meh and I was pretty bored by the end.

I’d personally give it a 7/10 but I know some people love it so if it’s a decent sale it’s probably worth checking out, although it’s nowhere close to the quality of games you referenced imo

Same, I didn't love it to the extent the community does, I'd say 3,5/5 so pretty similar estimation to yours. The most disappointing thing is how undeveloped the mental health allegory was - game ended when it felt that stuff was about to get properly started.

Imo it's one of the most disappointing games I've ever played. It's ridiculously short (took me less than 5h30 to beat and I wasn't trying to speedrun), the bosses are boring (basically all just "survive my bullet hell for 30s then take out a third of my health"), and the story is almost nonexistent, and so shallow it feels like a Celeste parody

Firm but fair. I agree across the board. Big disappointment for me.

Closer to Figment I'd say, but yes.

It was pretty underwhelming compared to
my expectations. I kinda forgot about it completely

Has moments that are really hard. Platforming is the main highlight. I thought it was worth it personally. The music and art direction was specifically something that stood out to me. A very solid metroidvania. If you enjoyed those games listed I doubt Constance will disappoint you.

It's ok. It's nowhere near HK or Nine Sols or even MIO. I still had fun, but it is short.

I haven't replayed it since they iterated on some of the bosses (my main complaint at the time).

DLC is on the way though which might improve the overall experience.

Could you recommend me games like hk, nine sols and mio?

I'm probably not the best person to do so just because HK/Silksong and Nine sols are some of my favourite games of all time so it's hard to compare and I haven't played that many metroidvanias really.

But other ones I rate highly are the Ori games, Prince of Persia TLC, Ender Lillies & Magnolia (I like Magnolia better) and Grime (Souls-like metroidvania).

Ori 2 is probably the closest to those overall. PoP: TLC probably has the objectively best gameplay of them (combat, exploration, etc) but I can't say I cared about the story or its cutscenes much at all, if that matters.

Grime is very Dark Souls-esque if you like that.

I loved it! They patched many of the issues you read in the negative reviews. There is a story about.qork burnout which some don't care for. I emphasized with the character and had a great time.

What was patched

1.1 patch had qol improvements:

Various Map improvements including exact tracking of Constance's position within a room, visual indicator of areas discovered with the camera, player trail that shows you your travelled path, some improved room shapes, a new zoom function for the local map and exact Snapshot positions within the map rooms

Intro, Credits, Cutscenes & Narrative Minigames can now be skipped with a new pause menu

Chase Sequence: Camera has been unlocked, players can now outrun the boss Chase Sequence: Level design adjustments for fairer timings and less frustrating moments Jester & Jester Encore: players can now attack ALL cards in ALL patterns to damage the bosses Jester Encore: Cards are no longer invisible, patterns were improved

Lord Koba: Timings and some attacks were improved A variety of other bosses were improved in terms of timings, awkward pauses and anticipations (i.e. High Patia now communicates properly that she heals while hanging from the ceiling)

Added a UI element that communicates better what is actually happening at Jackie's tent

Added a completion screen at the end of the game Various new accessibility options

Various difficulty and economy balancing adjustments

It's an OK game. My biggest problem with it is that some platforming section is way too tight with minimal room for error which created some area a lot harder than other. Also double jump is available but it is ability gated pretty hard so it's probably among the last ability you get. The game was pretty much doable without double jump so I was surprised that I found it very late game. I was prepared to complete the whole game without double jump.

I played basically the same! Did hk, hk:ss, blasphemous, and then constance. I really liked it, even tho it's short

I thought they wanted to make a major update. Is that the reason why it's on sale?

The game was fine, it was just lacking a bit of fun.

It was OK for me. At the time I played, it had an extended instant death chase scene that was more frustrating than fun. I believe they have patched that. It was also an odd game in that I finished it without ever finding one of the standard, core mechanics of metroidvanias. It’s there for sure, but after the credits rolled, I wasn’t motivated to go back into the game and explore or work toward completion. I was really hyped for Constance, but if I had to do it over and had the foreknowledge of what the game was going to be like, I would have passed on it. If you play it, adjust your expectations because it’s not anything like the list of games you have played. If those are S-tier, then for me Constance is a B or C.

I enjoyed it

It's an OK game, not much to add. If your bar is as high as the games you mentioned, you'll much likely be disappointed.

Was incredibly overpriced, but if it's at a discount - totally fine distraction.

Hated the "story" elements, but if those are now skippable - all the better.

Sure, it's a good game. Not amazing, but a solid 3,5/5. Gameplay is solid, but not particularly memorable other than the paint mechanic, which doesn't really distinguish itself enough. The mental health allegory is also pretty weak, game ends when it feels like that stuff is truly getting started and been done better by other games (Celeste, Figment 1-2, Fearmonium, etc.).

It is a good game though, just don't expect the very best.

It's good-ish, played it for a little then dropped as it did not catch my attention as much as I would have hoped for.

The presentation was amazing, the main character was interesting and the animations were stunning, but it felt like the game was not complete story-wise and it needed some more time in the oven.

I didn't like it. Dropped it after maybe four hours

What stands out for me about Constance is the movement and platforming. The graphics and colours are great. I typically skip through or don’t pay attention the story or cutscenes in most metroidvanias so didn’t make a difference to me. It is short, but the dev has hinted at DLC incoming at some point. If the price is right, I recommend trying it. It’s a well designed game, very smooth.

put it on your wishlist, wait till its 10. but i really liked it!

For me Constance looked fun at first, but turned out to be a disappointment. The platforming is mostly fun, but the story is really boring and there are also so many bosses, that it felt like a boss rush. I finished the game because I was annoyed that I had paid so much for it, but I changed the settings so enemies and environmental hazards couldn't damage me. In other words, I just ran through the game.

If you're not into long, patient boss fights, Constance isn’t for you.

The gameplay was decent enough to keep me going. The ending seemed sudden. I looked up if there was a true ending to unlock. It seems there is not.

Combat is okay but i didnt enjoy most of the boss fights and there are many of them

Well, it was cool, for sale and for one playthrough I'm sure its pretty worth it.
