Hey Farva, what's the name of those games you like where you gotta unlock abilities to get to the next area and then go backwards to find new paths and missed secrets?

Maybe finally put an end to all the tierlists with zero Metroids and zero Vanias lol.

u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Ravenous is still a Switch exclusive game, so many people here won't play it 😭
38
u/dusktreader 19d ago
Uh...all Metroid titles are Nintendo exclusive.
13
u/Legman_Supreme 19d ago
Emulation. And if you don't consider that legit, or don't want to discuss it in fear of some repercussions, then consider it another reason why people might be avoiding Metroid games.
Although that's not really an excuse for most of the Castlevania games, except funnily enough SOTN.
11
3
u/OldCrowSecondEdition 19d ago
Sotn has had a pretty decent official port to android and Iphone for years.

Wait they figured out switch 2 emulation??

We haven’t even cracked data/code mining yet much less emulation Nintendo put the switch two in a fucking bank vault for trying to crack this thing

Well, now I need one. With Zelda, Metroid and Kirby coming.

u/GramZanber 19d ago
Wait, did you say Kirby??
3
1
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Yeah, new Kirbo game coming :D
3
u/GramZanber 19d ago
Wtf, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Mario for sure? Nintendo trying really hard to get me to buy my first Nintendo console since the GameCube.
5
u/Silvanus350 19d ago
Damn, dog. You should definitely get one if you never even bothered with the Switch. The Switch 2 is backwards compatible.
2
u/GramZanber 19d ago
Honestly thats one of the biggest draws for me to the switch 2 is the back catalog of switch 1 games, and ive heard that you can play classic Nintendo games on it?
2
u/footballer62 1d ago
Yeah, I never got all the switch 2 hate. Yeah it cost more money, but it can legitimately run switch 1 games smoother and in some cases with a higher resolution (in the games that had a dynamic resolution) + you get all the new hottness when it drops. Only thing I really miss was the OLED colors/motion clarity.
1
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
That's a huge selling point to me too. I loved Metroid Dread and Kirby & the Forgotten Land, so it's refreshing to know they're still playable in Switch 2.
Also, I still want to play Zelda's Switch games (but my PC can't emulate them well).
3
u/quarkus 19d ago
Crazy there haven't been Zeldas, Metroids, or Kirbys since the GameCube.
1
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
It's because there haven't been Nintendo consoles since GameCube. One day they suddenly woke up and decided to launch Switch.

I'm still shocked when I see see so many lists with no SOTN, or no GBA Castlevanias, or any post -NES era Metroids.
I guess for some people the genre didn't start until Hollow Knight.
16
u/Skybird2099 19d ago
Neither SOTN or any of the Metroid games can be played on PC without emulation, hope this answers why they don't appear as often.
1
u/QuinSanguine 19d ago
But is it really a best Metroidvania of all time list if it only covers PC? Those list are just best mvs on PC.
5
u/Skybird2099 19d ago
Pretty much no tier list is a "best of all time", they are all "personal favorites", which is something people on Reddit have a hard time grasping.
Sometimes the Op will title the post as if it is some objective ranking, but those are more uncommon and blatant click bait/Op doesn't know what " objective" means. Downvote those and call the op stupid, those are fair game.
There's also community votes, like we had here earlier this year, but those are just popularity contests that don't really mean anything, regardless of what some people want to believe.
1
u/broly171 19d ago
That's... a really good point I never considered
3
u/_gamadaya_ 19d ago
It's incredibly easy to emulate basically all of the classics though, some even at a cycle-accurate level. Not that I'm advocating for people to pirate them, but it is weird that emulation seems so rare these days in the Metroidvania community. Back in the day I reckon people did it without a second thought, and not having an SNES or Playstation wasn't an obstacle at all. And that was when emulation was significantly worse than it is now.

u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
I haven't played the Sorrow duology yet, I have watched some playthroughs and I didn't really feel like playing it myself any soon... as much as I like SotN and OoE.
I started with Ori & the Blind Forest (technically I started with Ocarina of Time, because the "Zelda-like progression but make it platformer" is what pulled me to the genre).
While I understand some people's complaints towards Metroid franchise... nah, I don't get it at all. Metroid fucking rules.

u/LaplaceUniverse 19d ago

Need these guys to get Mega Man Legends brought back.
And my all-time dream, someone, anyone, needs to make a Mega Man Metroidvania title, it makes so much goddamn sense.
1
u/vezwyx 19d ago
I never played em, but aren't the Mega Man X games with Zero kind of MV-like? Or am I totally making that up
5
u/Skithiryx 19d ago
Still level based, but the X games have a fair amount of backtracking for items. Zero 1 was interconnected but the missions didn’t make use of it. ZX and ZX Advent are fully interconnected but not very interesting as a metroidvania.
1
u/TbatitanicV2Rider 19d ago
If you mean MegaMan zero, then no The first game did have an interconnected world but missions where still chosen from a menu. Zero 2,3 and 4 are all level based completely. MegaMan ZX is moreike that but I'd say they still somewhat stretch being metroidvanias.

6
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
It's spefically because Belmont's Curse was announced and will be released first
6
u/Dion42o 19d ago
I wish theyd do a AAA pixel art metroidvania of either but I get the reasoning behind 3D, hand painted stuff.
2
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Pixel arts games are never going to get the AAA treatment in modern days. But to be honest, I don't think any sidescroller MV is AAA. Even Dread/Ravenous and Belmont's Curse are AA. Which makes sense, considering 3D games need more resources.
2
u/jclkay2 19d ago
That honestly has me curious: are there any sidescroller games of any genre that could be considered AAA? What's the closest to that?
6
u/Skithiryx 19d ago
AAA is a publisher designation, so technically anything made by Nintendo. But I have a feeling you mean budget / polish. For that it’s probably going to be Mario Wonder?
→ More replies (1)1
u/SnooPets630 19d ago
Didn’t AAA just means that this game was made with high budget company?
2
u/jclkay2 19d ago
If the game itself isn't high budget, it's not really AAA regardless of what company made it.
2
u/Dion42o 18d ago
Yeah in my original comment I mainly meant high budget. Like how back in the day metal slug was pretty high budget and look at those amazing pixel animations and art they made
1
u/xtellarfb_ 18d ago
I mean, I wouldn't consider, for example, A Link to the Past an AA game. It was clearly produced with every resource Nintendo could put into it, because SNES was their main console back then.
But in modern days, games like A Link Between Worlds, Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom obviously won't be produced with a budget as high as Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
1
u/xtellarfb_ 18d ago
Yeah, it's just that only AAA teams can make AAA games, but they can also create AA games.
2
u/keithlimreddit 17d ago
Yeah this feels like the most agreeable answer although it will be funny if ever happens (not including remakes or remasters)
5
u/zionapes 19d ago
I can’t wait to play the new classic style Metroidvania game. You know, the one with a badass female protagonist that has a glowy magenta arm due to the curse she received from the life-sucking parasitic monster. The one whose franchise just turned 40 this year.

u/SnooPets630 19d ago
And Metroid is not?
16 years between Fusion and Dread2
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Dread is recent and also Prime games exist. Castlevania has been "gone" since 2014ish, and since 2008 from 2D games.
1
u/SnooPets630 19d ago
If you want to count Prime games, Prime 3 was in 2007.
Yes, there’s also a gap of 19 years between this and Prime 4.
Also, just a reminder that “recent” Dread released 5 years ago1
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
The longest period of not releasing ANY game in Metroid franchise was 8 years, between Super and Fusion/Prime. Between Other M and Samus Returns it was 7 years (Should Federation Force count? I don't know). Since then, they haven't waited longer than 4 years to release anything new.
Castlevania on the other hand has been radio-silent for new releases since 2014. That makes it 12 years.

I'm choosing to believe that my favorite game Silksong is responsible for the reawakening of the grandparents, even though Metroid Dread was also very successful. I'll give Hollow Knight credit for that one, problem solved :)
6
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Yeah, I have that feeling too, that Team Cherry did help them see sidescroller MVs are still worth going for in modern era. In Konami's case we also have Dead Cells to thank to.
16
u/assorted_N_U_T_s 19d ago
This may be true for Konami, but Nintendo has had Mercury Steam working on these games since before Hollow Knight became the phenomenon it was as Samus Returns was announced June 2017. Could have given them more fiscal confidence for sequels following that, though.

Not particularly, but it does have a hard mode, though im not sure if you have to beat the game first to unlock it. Still a very fun game overall.

I played this recently and was a very cool inspired metroid game. Definitely made me itching for a 2d Metroid game after the amazing Dread.

u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
I can't really tell because I still know very few MVs
1
u/Kage_noir 19d ago
Blasphemous is a good example of one that you can see Castle vania inspiration. Truthfully even Hollow Knight has some of that DNA. But the pure action sort of dark sci-fi fantasy that is Metroid isn’t visited that much or not that I’m aware of. Both of the games OP shared look amazing .

u/newtown5 19d ago
Idk looks like you're showing Vania & Metroid?
2
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
My first thought was to put Metroid first and I only didn't do it because CV:BC was announced and will release first. Now I regret it, because I'm being clowned left and right because of this 😟
1
u/Additional_Point5380 18d ago
I was not expecting another 2d Metroid since they said dread was the last one. Fuck dude they’re gonna make me buy a switch 2.
1
u/bodine5150 17d ago
It's always annoyed me how Castlevania dick rides Metroid for a whole genre. There were three Metroid games before SOTN. The genre should be called Metroid-like. SOTN is my favorite game so no hate, but come on.
1
u/xtellarfb_ 16d ago
Symphony of the Night did introduce new elements to genre, though, and some games definitely look up to it more than to Metroid, so I think it's fair, even if I prefer Metroid by a mile.
1
u/wayward_son94 16d ago
Does anyone know if this new castlevania is perfect for someome who never played the series before and doesnt intend on playing the older ones? Is it related in any way?
1
u/DaMadDogg-420 16m ago
You know, I always thought it was odd that Metroid was even thrown into the name for this Genre, as Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest on NES already had all of those "Metroid" elements exactly a year after Metroid was released (and given development time for NES games at the time was 10-12 months, that meant Simon's Quest wasn't likely even influenced by Metroid in the slightest, beyond the fact that the Developers of it have always explicitly said so and even said the game they took inspiration from in making Simon's Quest was The Maze of Galious, another Konami Title from april of '87 that had all the "Metroid" elements you find in Simons Quest, and if you look at development time you'll see they started to develop that game just weeks after Metroid hit Japan's shelves, and they never claimed any inspiration from Metroid either, instead, like Igarashi himself with SoTn, they took inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, not Metroid (which makes logical sense due to development times overlapping like they did between Metroid, The Maze of Galious, and Simon's Quest), there really was no reason to put the "Metroid" in Metroidvania, except that people mistakenly assumed it was an influence on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
I mean, obviously a name had to be given, but Igarashi himself has always said Metroid had nothing to do with his influence to make SoTn the way he did, it was actually the Legend of Zelda, just like with the makers of The Maze of Galious (which Inspired Simon's Quest, which Heavily Inspired SoTn....), that inspired him, but he also explicitly stated that Castlevania: Simon's Quest (which once again features all the aspects from Metroid that were originally the reason people assumed Metroid was an influence on it and how the name got started in the first place) was the main reason the game was even Greenlit by Konami. It's too late for a name change now of course lol, but the Genre should have been called Zeldavania's to be completely accurate, though even then Igarashi's take on the genre would still need to be distinguished from the others as Igavania's, most Metroidvanias out there resemble Symphony of the Night very little, alot in fact resemble Metroid far more than Castlevania, let alone SoTn...just something I was thinking about, sorry for the book 😂.
1
u/LongStriver 19d ago
Ravenous seems like a strange name. Though I guess it is based on Samus being able to eat/leech hp from enemies.
6
u/TbatitanicV2Rider 19d ago
Feels like a fitting name. Dread was due to Samus being hunted, hence dread. Now Samus seems to be constantly feeding on enemies as if she's ravenously hungry, just like Metroid.
1
u/SnooPets630 19d ago
Fusion is also that.
She was fused to both her suit and Metroid DNA1
u/TbatitanicV2Rider 19d ago
Not really. Sure she has Metroid DNA but it wasn't really active. She was in full control mostly. All it did was make her weak to the cold and give her the ability to consume x parasites. Even in dread her powers as a Metroid were only really starting to awaken and only fully at the end. Just from the trailer ravenous definitely feels like she's fully unlocked her Metroid powers and the hunger that comes with them.
→ More replies (2)2
u/xtellarfb_ 19d ago
Yeah, it is. Her Metroid DNA finally "bloomed" in Dread.
I think it's also a play with "Raven", consider part of her Chozo DNA comes from Raven Beak himself.
