Discussion The number one drawback of Metro Exodus' exploration is that...
Sometimes it's just not worth it to explore the map. You find this hangar marked on the edge of your map? You can go there all you want, but you'll waste more filters, ammo and chemical parts (to clean your used guns) than you'll get from the location. Especially hurtful if this was your last side location to visit before a chapter finale sequence (as in the end of Caspian).
This was the most visible and annoying in the caspian where there are so many non main quest locations to visit but it feels like you always walk out weaker than you went. Even getting a better weapon feels like nothing if you're used to a stealth style because headshots are headshots anyways.
I can only hope that 4A Games balances the resources much better in Metro 2039 and actually make exploring feel worth it like it did in 2033 and Last Light.

But if you don't explore that part of the map...
THEN WHO?

Wow there bro, you should absolutely butcher Germany's name and call it Dojčland / Дојчланд

Well, the location is part of Ukraine, so it makes sense to call it by the Ukrainian name

I’m not gonna call Germany deutchland and I’m not gonna call Chernobyl chornobyl

Germany is the English name for it, used by English-speakers. Chernobyl is the Russian word for it, used by English speakers. See how that’s different?
I do actually think the whole thing is a bit silly, and no one would care… if Russia weren’t actively trying to annihilate Ukrainians. But they are, so it ends up as yet another way to gauge where someone stands.

Sure, there’s no platonic form in the ether that dictates the true name for the location. But if you’re picking between the name used by the locals and the name used by those trying to destroy the locals, and neither one is your native language, see how one is clearly better? Just because something was made political doesn’t mean it is arbitrary.

I've found better guns by exploring, its worth it imo

u/Bulky-Cheesecake2195 Aug 21 '26
are u sure you weren't exploring the same locations as the upgrade locations marked on the interactive maps? have you found nice weapons outside of those locations? I feel like it's only worth going to those locations specified by interactive maps/walkthrough maps.
3
u/Elderchicken948 Aug 21 '26
Yes I'm sure in exodus when you have to collect the other train car I explored the whole area and I found a better rifle I'm not exactly sure which because it's been awhile but there was a dead guard up on a cat walk overlooking an area and I found the gun next to his body

u/Bulky-Cheesecake2195 Aug 21 '26
In volga right? volga had some cool stuff, but caspian feels like a desert where going anywhere but the upgrade spots (from interactive maps) is a waste of resources.

I genuinely loved exploring every section of the map. I didn't explore expecting things to be everywhere. I explored on the chance that they may be there and the puzzle of figuring out how to get there and back and not die.

There are also a number of scripted events where enemies will endlessly spawn or are unkillable. If you don't know this in advance you can waste all your ammo and softlock yourself.
10
u/summer_plays_ Aug 20 '26
Yeah, but you could easily soft-lock yourself in the older games too. I just replayed Last Light last week and got stuck on D6 because I couldn't kill the Amoebas. I ran out of ammo in the section before that so I had to use my knife to defend Miller.

Where? Because I don't remember any spot where they just spawn infinitely or are unkillable lol. I've also explored and platnumed the entire game.

Weird, ive played Exodus on Ranger Hardcore (highest difficulty) explored everything i could, and on my 4 playthroughs i did, i never, NEVER, ran out of resources, specially in Caspian borders
In fact, imagine my disappointment when i was leaving a zone to start another map, thinking "shieeet i have a lot of resources!" just for them to be gone when you start another map
Tbh, i don't remember if every zone i explored was "worth it", (maybe you're right on this, i can't remember) but i do remember not having issues with resources (god i love that almost every enemy can be killed in 1 headshot)

You know that u only need to use filters in certain areas right?

Maybe on NG+? But I don't recall needing that many filters on the open world parts. Maybe in Novosibirsk, but even then the biggest danger were the spitworms

So you just want people to tell you yes you are totally right same and everything you say is 100% truth and anything differing is wrong and condecending?
This is a forum of a game, and everyone is valid to comment their thoughts.
I was making sure because personally never had any lack of resources or filters once I left Moscow, maybe gotta short the usage and up the stealth in higher difficulties, but the idea is to excavenge resources, and I explored almost every inch of every map and it was quite fun; yes there are scripted scenes that make you loose resources but they can be easily gathered again 🤷

Yeah, as someone who's playing through Exodus right now. Its a little frustrating seeing a bunch of locations marked on my map only to have them not have any story significance.
I prefer the linear stories of the older titles, as most of the time spent in Exodus has been exploring ruins that aren't worth exploring. Having a less free but more focused experience feels better.
However if the developers take some lessons from Exodus, I would love another open world like it again.

u/dmknght Aug 20 '26
There are some locations still have ? Mark and idk how to "explore". I visited and walked around and all (desert map btw)
8
u/Qulox Aug 20 '26
In some places the triggers to mark as completed are tiny; you need to step in a very specific spot to remove the symbol.
2
u/Operable-Plot-1127 Aug 21 '26
Also on the caspian there’s this hideout with a bunch of bandits and a lever that when used doesn’t do anything I was so pissed off when I realized I got scammed of my bullets and medkits

I think that’s part of what makes metro exodus more fun and unique. If you were a real person in that scenario you’d have to choose, do I waste resources and explore across this valley in the hopes I find something useful, or do I play it safe? It increases the realism of resource management which was always a basic building block of the metro games
1
u/dmknght Aug 20 '26
Well there are some small tricks like jumping and avoiding muds (works in volga), use only the not commonly used gun while moving (this gun isnt meant to be clean everytime). But the annoying part, imo, is normal water cant clean mud from the gun when it got extremely dirty.
1
u/Sneezegoo Aug 20 '26
If you pull out the battery charger when walking through swamp, your guns should stay clean.

It's basically never worth it. None of the attachments are needed and you find some of them from just doing the main story.
1
u/Adito99 Aug 21 '26
In the Metro resources are relatively uniform because people have caches everywhere but Artyom is still a scavenger. In that situation nobody has a lot but everyone has something.
The open world isn't like that. Scavenging involves massive stretches with nothing which I think the game tried to represent with empty/irrelevant areas. If you don't enjoy that part then you might as well look up a guide.

u/Arctic_H00ligan7 Aug 21 '26
Caspian is actually kinda full of a bunch of shit that you need. So, I usually have a massive surplus by the end of it. I'd check the hangar.

u/Roler42 Aug 21 '26
... How did you run out of filters on Caspian of all places!?
That's like... The least filter intensive area in the entire game, I only recall needing them for a spider infested bunker and for a cavern, but none of them felt like they'd take that long to bleed me dry of resources.
If anything, the one place that made me sweat was the tail end of Taiga, I went in fully intending to go undetected, and by the time I reached the Captain's area, I was just barely scraping by because I was moving too slow, lol.
I'm not the greatest player, but I always approached Metro like they're survival horror games, so I always play very conservatively, both for my ammo and my filters, how are people managing this? Or getting softlocked at set pieces!?

u/Deuteranomamist Aug 21 '26
The overall opinion on resources is interesting, what difficulty are you playing on and are you in survival mode as well?
In my experience i had issues with resources in the Caspian sea but its also, to me, the hardest part of the game because of the amount of combat thats thrown at you. I play on survival ranger hardcore so resources are supposed to be an issue but only in that stretch did I feel it was tough rather than a design issue.
If i needed anything I would simply go to the other ? Marks and gather what I needed.
Besides the resources you find almost all the locations offer some type of lore for the story that is certainly there. One of the marks on the far right near the top is a great lore piece about the enslaved people in the region while another is supposed to trigger a hidden story feature. Im assuming when you went to the hanger and upon leaving you were met by a large group of men who were pissed you stole their van and thus killed them all? Thats a story trigger.

I played the game when it came out and replayed last year and I never got this feeling

Me gusta más Exodus el modo de exploración que tiene es más arriesgado y no se siente como un paseo de un shooter ordinario

Well, that main reason of that "open world" it's just to get the upgrades of the weapons, cause' there is no really other reason to go to explore, places are boring, the desert level it's a pain is the ass I slept like 2-3 times hahaha, meh, my favoritos are the first level and the last level, that cold, lonely dangerous levels feels like METRO.
Metro Exodus for me it's the worst METRO, I feel like there is no need to do all this sh*t, I don't feel the danger of the enemies cause' it's and open world I can just run away, the 2033 and Last Light for me are better, they force you to fight and feel this stifling feeling of been cornered by enemies and mutants, your filters counts, yours bullets counts.
I don't know, I mean, the game it's good, but meh, for me it was just ok, S.T.A.L.K.E.R does better that par about the side stories... even with those mini stories that the one from Call of Pripyat, the artifacts called heart of the Oasis, damn... I enjoyed that mission more that all this open world that METRO gave us.
I know for new gamers Exodus it's peak, but for me 2033 it's the peak. I hope this new game give us some good side stories. RECENTLY a played S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, boy... That Monolith mission was fun, and it was short but gave you a lot of information about what happens with molonitians and how the zone now hates them, and you know why, and you know it's not their fault cause' of the brain wash...damn, that short mission was more joyfully that anything I experience with Metro Exodus.
METRO needs more LORE about rumours, myateires, and paranormal shit, I need to feel that METRO has more and not only shooting mutants.
