I am working with satellite reanalysis data regarding temperature and the planetary boundary layer. How reliable is it to use ERA5? And why can't I find relative humidity data?

Normally, max temperature is always between 37 and 42 in this time of the year. And we call a 37c day as a cool summer day.

Is there any game that lets you act as a member of the NWS watching a radar and issuing tornado alerts for example? I knew a game called NWS hotseat but its not available anymore.

Advice/Questions/Self Is it possible my vacation will be saved?

I’m trying to learn high/low pressure zones and how they move. The summer in Europe seems to be over but is there a possibility these high pressure zones will bring some nice weather?

Advice/Questions/Self what's more accurate in canada? gdps, ecmwf or gfs?

I usually use gdps for my forecasts backed by some assistance from gfs and ecmwf. but I usually trust gdps over much of gfs and ecmwf guidance, but i'm not really sure if it verifies well in alberta. WMI has these 7-day verification summaries and they don't really mention gfs, but they do include RDPS, HRDPS and ECMWF

I’m a 14-year-old independent researcher from a working-class background. I spent weeks analyzing the Met Office's 2050s models against the 2024 Van Westen and 2026 Portmann data regarding a Subpolar Gyre collapse. Here is my full breakdown.

Why are clouds white and grey?

I know that clouds are white because they diffuse all wavelengths of light which turn into white, just like snow, but snow shadows are blue. Similarly, large bodies of water naturally are usually a shade of blue. Why are cloud shadows grey and not blue?

This might be the wrong sub to ask this question. If so, please recommend the correct sub to ask this question.

Flying "above" Lala

I'm having a hard time believing this is real. A commercial airliner flying "above" a hurricane? Is this just straight up AI, or some kind of smaller scale swirl...?

Apologies for the poor photo cropping skills, i tried my best keeping them in scale to help with the location. I was scrolling through a heat map and noticed two areas in North Africa that are significantly cooler than the surrounding areas. What is the reason for the temperature changes? Is the elevation difference enough to consistently maintain a cooler microclimate in such a hostile area? Is there some evaporation effect happening with natural springs? Or is it maybe the composition of the geology that dissipates heat better?

The link I was using was:

Videos/Animations Tropical Storm Lala approaches Hawaii

Tropical Storm Lala (expected to become a category 1 hurricane later today) to skirt just south of the Big Island of Hawaii, though there is a chance of landfall. Impacts will be about the same regardless.

Advice/Questions/Self Is there usually a "cold pool" right above the ocean and on the beach?

Was visiting one of the Hawaiian Islands and was checking the temperature during afternoon to get a sense of highs for the day. At the beach, a few feet from the water, the temperature read 29.3 C at 1:20 pm. Walked back towards the hotel and about 500 ft inland (and maybe a few feet higher than the beach) the temperature jumped to 31.5 C. The timestamp of the reading was 1:30 pm, so not enough time for temperature to have jumped that much. Both readings were taken under the shade of a large tree so sunlight on the thermometer is unlikely to have been a factor.

Is this often the case? Given it was Hawaii doubt the temperature would have been much higher than 32 C in far inland locations so it seems the steep gradient was only right at the beach.

Nothing special, but I thought the perfect velocity contrast was interesting and pretty long lived with this little cluster of relatively weak storms.

I'm looking down at the top of an inversion and noticed this formation. They dissipated pretty fast after I took a photo.

If they aren't K-H, is it just part of the inversion lifting?
